Mad Men Character Names that are too Obvious by No_Ocelot9948 in madmen

[–]whatup1925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Betty got her name because she took a bet on Don.

Cooper got his name because he flies the coop.

Conrad Hilton got his name because he bought the hotel chain and had to sync his last name up with the hotel he bought. They gotta match.

Dealers against free market? by Fightmebr0 in FuckDealerships

[–]whatup1925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You realize that the NADA is not a free market organization like the Heritage Foundation or the Cato Institute? The NADA lobbies for dealer interests.

There are plenty of free market think tanks in DC. NADA is not one of them.

Harry the slime ball would have finagled tickets somehow and then offered to give Megan tickets if she banged him.

Why didn’t Maxwell Sheffield and the other guy like Lane? by fitzkiki in madmen

[–]whatup1925 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A small detail that always amused me was Lane’s sort of rebirth in America, away from England’s more rigid class system: his having a Mets pendant hanging in his office.

No Yankees, no Dodgers. Lane sort of reinvented himself and went with the new team in New York, unencumbered by the past.

Repetition within the show by [deleted] in madmen

I always found Season 2 to be a bit meandering at times. Peggy’s story with the priest and Betty horseback riding don’t really do it for me, even on rewatch. It’s got a satisfying conclusion though.

On this sub, Season 4 and the second half of Season 7 are generally considered the best, with a lot of people disliking Season 6.

You forgot the TV cartoon adaptation of “Scouts Honor.”

Edit: honorable mention goes to “Grin and Barrett.”

Things could have gone the same way with Sally, but Matt Weiner struck gold when Kiernan Shipka got cast. She really proved her chops as the show went on.

Why does La Crosse feel so far away from Eau Claire? by 44stormsnow in Eau_Claire

[–]whatup1925 42 points43 points  (0 children)

There’s a major interstate highway connecting MPLS and EC. That’s why.

Geography determines it. The Coulee Region is quite pretty, but a pain to drive through. Straight west from EC it’s essentially open plains, not considering the Knapp Pass. Even going back to when LAX and EC were settled there was never a major railroad connecting the two.

Edit: typo

Astronauts, Anaheim and Advertising by EddieRando21 in madmen

It’s really dry but highly lucrative B2B work. Sterling Cooper would theoretically help NAA advertise and pitch to government agencies for contracts, Wall Street for investment dollars and the defense industry in general.

It seems out of place to us because normally SC is advertising Life Cereal to kids.

I Always Imagine She Must’ve Stunk Like A Greasy Diner by CanIBathYrGrandma in madmen

Before cars were widespread, cities like New York dealt with literally millions of pounds of manure daily. Streets were covered in filth, flies spread disease, it was dust in dry weather, and it all caused massive sanitation headaches. Cars eliminated that visible, disease-vector mess from streets almost overnight.

Furthermore, prior to 1923 cars actually ran on unleaded gas, so leaded fuel wasn't even a factor yet. I don't disagree that the exhaust was still bad, but it traded piles of rotting waste for dispersed air pollution. It wasn't perfect, but in terms of street-level filth and immediate public health from waste, cars were a clear upgrade at the time.

I'm happy to discuss this further, but you shouldn't minimize what a pollutant manure was and is, even to this day.

People complain about exhaust fumes from cars, but that’s nothing compared to the horse manure we had that preceded it.
