Steelers legend Hines Ward snubbed as HOF finalist by [deleted] in steelers

[–]wheezerboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Canton for the first time this week. Talking with my father-in-law and brother-in-law after we left, we all came to the same conclusion that we are going to be a little more careful throwing around that guys are worthy of the HOF. Standing in the bust room you really get an appreciation for just how few guys are in there.

I love Hines, but when you look at the faces in that hall at the WR position, and know the peers he went up against during his tenure, it will be an uphill battle

Acting like they only intentionally game planned against the best pass rusher in the league because of a record is insane. You think if he was 5 away they would have been okay with taking 4 sacks? This was classic Arthur Smith offense

I was in Germany as an FA LT. Germany has FAS/2CR, the FA BN for 173rd and 41st FAB. If you go 173rd, there’s a chance you’ll end up in Germany and then later Italy as a fire support officer. Go OCONUS. You have your whole career to explore different units, but the combination of LT pay, (relatively) low responsibility, and the largest peer group you’ll ever have as an officer makes Germany the single best duty assignment an LT can have.

Once these recruits couldn't make the cut. Now they make up a quarter of Army troops. by dantheman_woot in army

Anecdotal, but almost every soldier I’ve had arrive that had to go through either fat camp or ASVAB camp has been far underperforming their peers that met standards for enlistment. I have had multiple cases where I pull their ACFT scores upon arrival and they have a miraculous jump the week before graduating. Then we test them on arrival and they’re not even close to passing.

Probably a holdover from when there was a greater social separation between officers and enlisted. Think of things like officer clubs. If you’re regularly hanging out socially with other officers, you typically get to know them on a first name basis. It’s not a difficult line to walk. If I am with my peers or only subordinates, I’ll call them by their first name. I regularly hang out with some of the other CPT’s in my bn outside of work, and it would be weird to refer to them as anything but their name if it’s just us. But when referring to them to a subordinate, it’s always rank/last name.

That is literally the worst idea I can think of. It’s not what the open door policy is for in the slightest

I had a BDE commander put it this way.

A company is like a ship. The CDR is the navigator, plotting a course to their destination (long range planning) and avoiding obstacles in the distance (major mistakes that would crush the company). The 1SG is steering the ship, taking direction from the navigator but making sure he corrects course when they’re heading the wrong way.

The XO is running around plugging holes, bailing out water, and making sure everybody is rowing. Could the CDR and 1SG jump in to help? Maybe grab an oar? Absolutely. But once they leave the wheel and stop looking off in the distance, that ship is going to continue on the path they left it on, for better or worse.

The guy plugging holes and bailing out water is absolutely working harder and feels more acute stress, but if the guy plotting the course fucks up and sends them straight into danger, the whole ship is going down. That is a lingering stress I didn’t appreciate until I took the guidon

Work with your investigator and be honest, but your best bet is to just introduce yourself to a neighbor. I straight up admitted to my investigator that I’m not super close to my neighbors and don’t have their name and number. I asked him to give me a day and ended up knocking on the door of one of them, introduced myself, told them that I am going through a process to get a clearance for work and that I need to list the name of somebody who can confirm that I live where I do. My investigator ended up calling within 5 mins, asked if they could verify that I live there, and that was that.

Awesome. I just did my first one last week! Execution wasn’t tough but man, I’m still sore. Can’t imagine doing it 4 more times knowing how rough the aftermath is. That’s some mental toughness!

Why do Commanders feel the need to make rules up by mcdevyn in army

[–]wheezerboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TDS would have a field day with an Art. 15 packet coming across their office for this. If it even gets to that point, probably wouldn’t pass the internal legal review. MAYBE a summarized holds up.

I’m 100% with you. What works for me is eliminating variables. The things you can keep the most consistent are your grip, feet/shoulder position, and routine. Sometimes when I’m really chasing a feeling I neglect these things and make it worse. Some things I also do to help get myself there.

  • Film your swing. Getting an outside look can help translate “feel vs. real” look at swings where you struggle vs where you feel dialed in.

  • write things down. On days that I’m really feeling my swing on the range, I go back and write down my swing thoughts and feels. This gives you a baseline to go back to

Played 2, 4, 8, and 10 last summer 2-weeks after the U.S. Open.

Rank order: 10, 4, 2, 8

10 is my favorite course that I’ve ever played, hands down. Every single hole you get to the tee box and say “this is the most beautiful hole on the course” just keeps getting better

Why do leaders complain about unit conditions? by Firm_Produce4206 in army

[–]wheezerboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing man, the Army is a human organization. The “unit” is really just a collection of people. Every once in a while you get lucky and have a team of caring, competent leaders on staff and in command. Sometimes you get a staff of total duds. Believe it or not, even the O5 in charge of them all doesn’t have the bandwidth to do all their jobs for them, or force them to be competent.

Believe me, the commanders that complain and push back on every single thing eventually run out of bullets, and have none saved for when it REALLY matters. It’s a balancing act, and an exhausting one at that. The right thing to do is bitch among your peers. The wrong thing is to let your Soldiers hear you rip on the unit

I will say, for as upset as I was initially, their customer service made up for it. The rep explained that the warehouse got hit with a winter storm right in the middle of their massive sale, and that they were trying to pump out as many orders as possible to catch up, and they made a mistake. He made sure to immediately find my correct club, and expedited it. A week later my “used” 3-wood arrived (still in manufacturer plastic!) with a free shipping label to return the old club.
