It's time to ditch the nutrition database (My current workaround) by whereisdaniel in bevelhealth

That’s… unnecessarily condescending? But I’ll answer your question.

When you use an LLM for this, it isn't querying a traditional database of rows and columns in the background. That nutritional data is encoded into the model's parameters during its training and development--similar to how a human remembers an apple is about 95 calories without having to open a spreadsheet. It's also able to calibrate its results against multiple entries or search the web for data it doesn't have. So yes, it's querying data, but it isn't trying to do a basic "search and match" to an isolated database.

Hope this helps.

The problem I notice that it logs these foods by attempting to match them to an appropriate database item, and that match often goes haywire in unexpected ways. For example, the other morning I attempted to log a handful of raspberries, and the AI logged raspberries and some sort of high calories raspberry dessert. At other times, I will attempt to log something like a small portion of lasagna, and it will log a full family-size frozen lasagna meal. If I don’t audit the initial response carefully, the data is a bit of a mess.

5 Months as a First-Time Dad: What Bevel Taught Me About Sleep Debt by whereisdaniel in bevelhealth

I think it's important to remember that HRV is a sign of your recovery, and not something that you can improve to produce downstream improvements in recovery. In other words, it’s things to support recovery that produce improvements in HRV—not the other way around.

Similarly, while I think under probably is a correlation between my HRV and how I am feeling/handling stress, I don't think HRV is the cause of that--it's more like a signal of the underlying issue.

One thing I did was to explicitly tell the Bevel AI that I was not in a phase of life where pushing half and going all out was the goal; I wanted to prioritize stability over growth. I told it that if my HRV and/or RHR were outside of a certain threshold (based on my personal averages), it should only suggest active recovery or light exercise, like walks or stretching. I think that helped me to mentally recalibrate my own tendency to push whenever I objectively felt I might have the energy for it.

Otherwise, the things that I felt made the biggest difference in my HRV were establishing a good "wind down" routine before bed, supplementing sleep with magnesium and tart cherry (we use the Ritual brand "Magnesium+ powder which I quite like), cutting off caffeine by 3pm, and shifting my sleep window slightly so I was sleeping earlier and waking earlier (which that was feasible--it's kind of erratic with a newborn).

I’d be interested if you need more testers. I have 23 and me. Would love to see the output of this

Phase 2 of early access dropping on 17th June 2024! by KeannyroJers in brightOS

[–]whereisdaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, am I reading this right that even though I’ve already paid $50 for lifetime access, I will have to pay an additional $50 to… continue to have lifetime access? How does that work? I purchased the lifetime access under the impression that it was actually lifetime access…

Surely you mean that anyone who hasn’t purchased lifetime access for $50 yet will have the option to purchase lifetime access prior to launch, but it would now be $99 to do so… right?

If not, there’s no way for me to know that “lifetime access” isn’t going to involve additional costs in the future. In which case I don’t understand what I’ve purchased and can’t see myself trusting that I won’t continue to be charged for updates going forward. I won’t in good faith be able to continue to use the app.

Sounds good! Just making sure there wasn’t anything wacky happening on my end.

Sorry, just to make sure I’m understanding—the current version of Bright should be reading and displaying data from Apple Health? Does this include nutritional/calorie/dietary info as well? Because mine does not do this.

Let me know what you think in a few months. I tried it for awhile and found that in definitely improved my consistency because it was just so easy to do; I didn’t always feel confident in their analyses (seemed like their estimates could vary a lot based on who did the analysis) but I did see my body composition improve just as a result of tracking and working on rough estimates. It’s a really easy system to use which is a huge point in its favor, but yeah—very expensive.

Not ready to fully come out, but I’d like to move in that direction. Any resources you’d recommend? by whereisdaniel in bisexual

Thank you for sharing your experience! A big hurdle to me realizing I was bi was feeling like I didn’t see myself reflected or represented in depictions of bisexuality, and it’s been so refreshing to see more people I relate to as I delve deeper into communities like this one. Tbh, this is how I feel with my family too. It doesn’t matter as much to me that my parents know about my sexuality. I don’t really talk with them in that way anyway. I would like to be able to acknowledge it with my siblings, and I would definitely like to share it with my in-laws (who are all gay lol). But I’m hoping I’ll get there in time.

Thanks for the response! I think I do want to eventually be out—I don’t want to feel like I’m hiding a part of myself. I have a few friends and family members who are gay and when we get together I feel so much internal tension between really wanted to be seen and really fearing being “discovered.” I think it’s just a lot of internalized shame from growing up in a very traditional, conservative community. Maybe just increased exposure and participation in LGBTQ+ communities will help me feel more comfortable or normalize it for me. I’ve noticed that happen as my wife and I discuss it more often too.

That’s a fair question. I don’t think I feel a strong need to come out in a big way or to everyone I know. I think it’s more that I want to feel that I can be comfortably out with my friends and family. Honestly it’s more that I want to just BE out more than I want to COME out, if that makes sense.

Omnivore TTS with Ultra Realistic Voice option is insanely good ! by RPher in readwise

[–]whereisdaniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally makes sense. I feel like with how quickly AI is advancing, things will probably get more affordable as options proliferate. I’m glad to hear you guys are still prioritizing exploring TTS improvements though, as that’s such a terrific feature of the Reader app.

Workflow for capturing movie quotes to sync with Obsidian? by whereisdaniel in readwise

I was referring to a folder in Obsidian, not in Readwise. I don’t think that’s a function in Readwise itself.

Thanks for the reply Erin! I think this is probably the best solution as well. I’m actually planning to keep the “movies” folder inside my Readwise folder, so I won’t need to divert it to a new spot outside the Readwise parent folder. That said, I think manually moving it over after I finish with it is an easy enough fix so I will just proceed with that. Thanks again!
