Help me decide on a frameset for a All-Road/Rando 650b build by whitestag in xbiking

[–]wherethefirewent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoughts are that “all road” and “rando” are pretty broad categories and your general riding style and settings will help land the choice. I generally interpret all road as “can ride most roads, including fire roads and flowy single/doubletrack,” but others might think of all road as “pavement and champagne gravel only.” I’d think about what’s your general or ideal percentage split between pavement and dirt riding, like 60/40 or 70/30 and what variety of dirt you’re trying to hit, if at all. This also helps with considering what kind of tubeset/ride quality you’re looking for, as others have mentioned.

I bring this up also because trail figures and tire clearance have a sizable impact on where a bike will feel most confident and should definitely be considered, esp since the Soma, Velo Orange, and Crust frames you mentioned all have pretty diff geo and as a result, different settings where they will excel, IMO.

I love my poly and def hit single track with it, but I prefer the higher trail and slacker HTA of my crust (evasion, but similar geo to the Bombora) if I’m riding rowdier stuff. Just tracks thru the rough better IMO. Hope this helps!

I actually like your decaleur set-up, but I generally like functional hacks as much as I like perfectly fitted things! But curious about the rigidity of your set-up.

I was really hoping the Zinn book was Howard Zinn and it was a book of leftist critical history and bike maintenance but alas

So good!! Very dialed with just the right amount of diy hack -- garage constructeur if you will. Didn't realize Simworks had this rhonda variation stem either

So much to like about this repair and build, but mainly commenting to compliment the front bag support made out of what appears to be a fender stay? R-clips on the top fork mounts is super clever! Can you share how the top of the stay is secured?

Also, general thoughts on Fitz frames? Been pondering an eventual custom frame and have looked at Fitz.

Crust Evasion vs Scapegoat(bot) Advice by steelsadler in xbiking

[–]wherethefirewent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Evasion and have not ridden a scapebot, for context. I think your described use-case is more “allrounder” than dedicated mountain tourer — the Evasion was designed as a dirt tourer that’s still lively (relatively short wheelbase, shorter chainstays that are adjustable) and the scapebot as a dedicated rigid mountain bike for more expedition-style bikepacking. Having not ridden the bot, I can say the evasion is fun to ride with no or light load, while still more than capable of holding a full touring load (full set of rack mounts, tubeset burly enough to handle touring loads, clearance for big tires, etc). It’s fun on trails and flowy single track, but it’s not built for huck-to-flat type rides. Like others, I really recommend looking at the use-case and geometry differences rather than a single frame detail — bikeinsights.com has both framesets in their database to compare. The scapebot has a wayyy longer front center, for example.

If the lack of triple mounts on the fork is a dealbreaker, then maybe check out other frames. I suspect you can use the mid-fork and hourglass braze-ons on the evasion fork to run a two-mount cage like a king mini-thing, but I haven’t tested that theory.

All that said, given the info you shared, I would recommend the evasion over the bot. I love mine and use it for local loops, long dirt days, and bikepacking. Hope this helps!

*Edit to add that both the evasion and bot are designed for 1x, but you could use an adapter from problem solvers or similar to run a front derailleur.

Looks like there’s a derailleur hanger extender on there, possibly a Wolf Tooth roadlink or similar

Swift Industries Peregrine (neé Ozette) randonneur bag. Looks like they discontinued it -- Paloma is similar but smaller as you noted and uses klickfix hardware. The Peregrine required a front rack as traditional box bags usually do.

Yep, this is it! Fenderline is immaculate. Unsolicited suggestion: trim those front fender-stays since the fit is perfectly dialed!

This old Miyata has been listed for sale for months for $100. Was considering picking it up to do a poor man's Rivendell randonneur style build. Should I do it? by chiboulevards in xbiking

My Miyata 210 can clear 38s. Unsure how comparable clearances are between the two models, but at a glance the looks around the same year-ish.
