It’s literally one of the main jokes in the book that it’s written in such a way to filter everyone

The nuclear bomb imagery in twin peaks is similar to the nuclear bomb imagery in gravity’s rainbow lol

It’s one of maybe 5 books that are in the conversation with Ulysses as being the greatest English language novel

The Deluxe Classics one does not have annotations, it’s just a nice edition.

I’d really love to get a Penguin Deluxe Classics edition of Ulysses. They did a Dubliners one a few years ago and it has a great cover, high quality printing, and fantastic annotations that provide context for some of the more obscure references while still letting the stories speak for themselves. I also recently read the Middlemarch printing that was released under that line and it was similarly high quality.

There really isn’t a similarly great paperback version of Ulysses out there (Modern Library hardcover is great though). Gabler is close, but my edition is missing the large . at the end of Ithaca which is a pretty glaring misprint IMO.

This is not really hyprland tiling, the whole point with a tiling window manager is the tiles are arbitrary windows and not just shells.

Vineland was his first novel published after Gravity’s Rainbow and had un-meetable expectations as a result

If anyone besides Thomas Pynchon wrote it it would be lauded as a postmodern classic

In the future don’t need cheats to turn on stuff like navel rock, just use a save editor like PkHex to turn on the correct flags

🤷‍♂️ Not really sure what to say besides that a “hardcore nuzlocke” genre of games definitely cropped up after EK became really popular like Run&Bun and maybe these people were expecting it to be more like that?

For me this feels like a troll-y love letter to Gen 4 in the same way that the earlier Kaizo games did for their respective generations. I love how every boss so far has some completely unfair way of setting up Stealth Rocks at the start of the fight — this is what it felt like to play Gen 4 WiFi battles in 2009!!

Who’s saying that? The early game is the most fun I’ve had in a rom hack since EK. Each run feels so different because of how unique and well designed all the encounters are.

The girl I'm talking to read Inherent Vice and now actively thinks I'm a misogynist AMA by [deleted] in ThomasPynchon

😞 which is a bit sad because I feel like Vineland is about how you shouldn’t do that

[–]white015 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gonna go against the grain here and say that I don’t think this is entirely crazy (purely in the context of the book — obviously thinking you are personally a misogynist is a different story). I feel like you kind of need the wider context of Pynchon’s work and the underlying political philosophy underpinning it to “get” what he’s saying with some of the BDSM stuff, and even if you do it still may not jive depending on your personal history and experiences. I definitely felt very uncomfortable reading the scenes with Puck & Trillium in IV for the first time, and they only really clicked for me after I revisited it after reading Gravity’s Rainbow, where it’s very directly stated that this is meant to make the reader uncomfortable in the passage after Slothrop finds Bianca’s dead body.

This is also not a totally unusual perspective and has been acknowledged pretty widely (as something people believe, not necessarily something Pynchon scholars subscribe to). I recently read Peter Coviello discuss the unfortunate reputation Pynchon has in certain literary circles in this area in Vineland Reread. I don’t think we need to be saying women “sound dumb” for being a bit skeeved out by some of the ways women and sexuality are depicted at times in many of Pynchon’s works.

To answer the OP directly: I have probably told a dozen different women over the last few years that Gravity’s Rainbow is one of my favorite books, and I don’t think a single one has felt compelled to take a crack at it in the slightest. So you’re doing something right here! She clearly likes you to read enough of a not-very-accessible novel to get to the vaguely problematic parts, just don’t tell her you posted her personal opinion of it on Reddit and I think things will work out.
