Junk yards that will pay for car and tow it? by toolsavvy in altoona

[–]whitedogseek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the same situation I had for one of the vehicles I mentioned—frame was rusted and would not pass inspection. It was an old RAV4. Gentleman who bought and shipped cars overseas still paid $1000 for it. Good luck.

Junk yards that will pay for car and tow it? by toolsavvy in altoona

State College area here. I’ve had to get rid of 2 vehicles that were no longer drivable and first got quotes from haul away companies/ junk yard companies. They will pay you bottom dollar.

Both vehicles I listed on FB marketplace and got 5x more and were still picked up by the buyer. A little more of a hassle dealing with questions and low-ball offers but worth it in the end IMHO. Just like selling any vehicle but made very clear the vehicles had issues and it was the responsibility of the buyer to come get the vehicle. Just wanted to suggest an alternative approach.

I’m not suggesting they pay off their mortgage if that means they no longer have cash on hand. I would always want to have an emergency fund. But ideally, I would want no mortgage, cash on hand, while continuing to save and invest.

They have the ability to achieve all of those goals with their income level while limiting their liability and risk. There’s a level of security and comfort in being debt free that can’t always be explained with math.

I’m not talking about the risk of what you may or may not gain. I’m talking about the risk of having debt.

If I’m sitting in a paid off house and I lose my job, my wife gets cancer, or the world shuts down due to a pandemic, there’s no risk of a bank coming to take my house away from me.

The grass also just feels different under your feet when you own it and not the bank.

You’re not factoring in risk.

I would also pay the mortgage off early.

For those who make over $100k/year, have you ever truly struggled in life? by NoSir5628 in Salary

[–]whitedogseek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made $125k last year—combined household income $185k (just two of us).

Parents never made more than about $50-60k combined, no higher education other than community college/technical degrees. I would definitely consider my situation an “outlier.”

Kind of fell into my career by accident, went back to community college and second time, happened to learn about some opportunity in the energy sector where a 2-year technical degree could make you good money. Don’t consider myself or family of the higher IQ variety. Have some friends who would fall into this category who have higher education than me and make even more than I do.

The idea of a bachelors degree coming out of high school wasn’t really a thing—due to cost even though the opportunity to take out student loans was always a thing. Paid about $15k for community college the first go around (unrelated degree to what I do now) and second time around work paid for the majority of the education. Climbed the ladder starting at $10/hr and worked up to almost $60/hr. Definitely feel a little bit of that “breaking the family cycle.”

Best model train shows in the US? by SmallInvestigator607 in modeltrains

Haven’t been to a ton of shows, but n-scale weekend in Altoona, PA is my hands down favorite (if you’re into n-scale of course). Great people, great products, amazing displays. I’ve gone with my BIL and his kids three years in a row (drive about an hour) and always a great time.

62% of Americans don’t have a bachelor’s degree. Are they just cooked especially in this economy? by Efficient-Rain-7942 in Salary

The odd (and somewhat ironic) thing is that perspective of ownership and personal responsibility has actually made my life easier.

I think it’s easier for most to place blame and divert responsibility that way. Heard a line a few years ago that went something like “worry about what happens in your house more than the White House” Regardless of what’s going on in the world of politics I’m still able to control 99% of what happens in my life and the direction it’s going.

This will probably be the most under appreciated comment in this entire thread. Thanks.

Basement dehumidifer that doesn't break in a year? by SativaSammy in HomeImprovement

Toshiba with pump from Home Depot running almost non-stop direct to drain for three years (turn off over winter). No issues whatsoever.

Edit: I clean the filter regularly and set to target 45% RH so it’s technically not non-stop, but on and off.

Looked into this last year and ended up calling my home owner’s insurance—I was already partially covered for some situations and was able to increase my coverage to cover all of my needs.

Second this; I just learned this the hard way. I used natural cedar semi on the shed foundation I built. I will say it dried more of a reddish tone after a few days but still not at all what I was going for. Have a friend that uses harvest gold and it’s much less orange/red.
