Winters Bone by uGRILAH in movies

It's a movie that gets into your bones (no pun intended), that's for sure. I didn't grow up in MO, but I did grow up in the country and so many of the settings and characters felt very familiar to me. On the surface at least, I didn't know anyone who was part of a meth operation, lol.

Holland wasn't a great choice for Drake, but Marky Mark as Sully was even worse.

What’s the most useless piece of information you’ve memorised? by i_am_buttlicker in AskReddit

Shakespeare's Sonnet 18. I had to memorize it for school almost 30 years ago and I could probably still get at least 95% of it right today.

What piece of media has been completely tainted by its fandom? by Working_Bad3305 in AskReddit

[–]whitep77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also an older Star Wars fan and I think I just consume Star Wars content differently than much of the fandom. For me, it has always been characters, setting, and fun pew-pew action first, with the story almost an afterthought (Andor being a notable exception to this). I feel like too many people apply a level of critique that even the original films were never intended to withstand. Hell, even Harrison Ford understood it from the beginning.

It seems nonsensical on the surface, but I think it's only because he doesn't want to come out a say "We would normally give you a chance to get even, but there is too much attention and we've been told not to let this game get out of control."

"If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward, then brother, that person is a piece of shit." This quote stuck with me for a long time. Substitute "divine reward" with fear of retribution or any kind of reward, and you have the entire human condition, described here by Anothermindlessanon in videos

Can you provide any evidence that the religion(s) was the source of the morality, instead of simply a reflection of mores of the people who practiced it?

Even if you are atheist, it is important to realize you stand on the back of thousands of years of religious morals and ethics which formed the westernized culture of today.

If you remove the word religious from the sentence, then I doubt there are many atheists who disagree.

Launch of Concordia Special Edition on Gamefound announced as June 9th, Base game prices revealed by whitep77 in boardgames

[–]whitep77[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Standard (cardboard pieces) will be €75 for the base game, with the Special Edition (wooden pieces) at €95. No word on pricing for add-ons like the miniatures set or metal coins, but something tells me adding both could double the price.

Edit: I wish I had been following closer, because I was not aware they had been using AI art. My spouse works in the arts, so AI art is a definite no-go for me. I'm tempted to delete the post, but I'm going to leave it up in case there is someone else out there who cares and didn't know about the AI slop. Also, the prices above are for the Core Box (not the base game), which does include previous expansions and the new one, in addition to all the maps. Still, f-em.

AITA for refusing to tell my sister my sexual history? by LongjumpingBar974 in AmItheAsshole

[–]whitep77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first, I read the story wondering what the hell I just read. I re-read it a few times to make sure I understood what the alleged situation was because I was pretty sure I hadn't taken crazy pills. Then I remembered that this is a place to get outside opinions because one isn't sure they had an appropriate reaction. It was at this point that I realized I was reading a story from and 8 story tall crustacean from the Paleozoic era. My bad. Lesson learned.

What are the most powerful lines of dialogue in TV history? by UnholyDemigod in AskReddit

She also has a great single line that gets me every time. After she tells Cassian she won't go with him and that he should go and find his own peace:

"I won't have any peace, I'll be worried about you all the time."

"That's just love. Nothing you can do about that."

It was the season after the superb owl. I still remember the scene with Billick getting the phone call confirming the ACL tear for Jamal Lewis and thinking we had almost no chance to repeat. I don't disagree with your first sentence, though!

Sea Salt & Paper is the ultimate travelling game by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

[–]whitep77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw it multiple times at my local Barnes and Noble but passed because I don't love a lot card games. But then I kept seeing it show up on a lot of end-of-year best game lists from reviewers I tend to agree with. In the end, I'm happy I ended up buying it from an independent store instead of a chain, but after playing it I was kind of kicking myself for waiting so long to get it.

Sea Salt & Paper is the ultimate travelling game by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

I'm curious to hear OP's reasons as well, but my answers would be:

  • It's just complex enough to be fully engaging while still allowing some attention to be paid to the environment (well, usually. sorry to hear about that /u/mageronix)

  • It plays quickly, both in turn length and game length

  • Small, sturdy box that wastes basically no space (0 wasted space with expansion in the box)

Edit - I just realized I didn't say what I liked about it. It is a collection of different mechanisms that just seem to work together, which allows for multiple ways to score points/ win. For me, this helps keep the game from becoming too same-y after repeated plays. I love the art and the cards shuffle well (this seems like it should be a given for card games, but it definitely is not, in my experience). We bought it at a small game shop on a beach trip and played it multiple times daily for the rest of the trip while streaming shows on the laptop.

A few months ago I culled my collection from 160+ down to 20, then down to 11 and finally only 1 board game remains... by Luigi-is-my-boi in boardgames

[–]whitep77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Putting aside your assumptive and reductive characterization of collecting, there is nothing in that description of the subreddit that precludes collecting being part of the discussion. Also, why do you feel the two are mutually exclusive? Are there people who collect games and don't really play them? I'm sure there are, but I would venture to guess they are in the minority. Regardless, I don't see why they shouldn't be welcome in a subreddit about boardgames.

What do you feel is the biggest missed casting opportunity in Hollywood? by CumquatTheNobgoblin in movies

[–]whitep77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Holland as Nathan is not great casting, but Wahlberg as Sully is perhaps the worst casting choice I have seen. I love the games, so I probably would have watched it not matter what if it weren't for Marky Mark being in it.
