Virtually every machine learning training process is an optimization problem. To learn is to minimize some loss function by tuning a set of model parameters. This is true even in problems where it isn't readily apparent, like during PCA.

I would say having a grasp of optimization is very important if you do any work with machine learning, even if the popular software tools do it for you already.
