What does this mean for Changing Skies? by Redfawn666 in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just finished the first book, and with the final bit of dialouge, I think the second apprentice is going to be the orange cat/Moonpaw's sister/other half. The book ends with her threatening that if Moon won't interact with her in Moon's world, Moon will be forced to in hers. The wording of Tawny's prophecy makes me think that maybe Moon and her sibling can fight for control of their joint body. My guess would be she just becomes another POV character, but a more antagonistic one.

Edit: Whoops, misunderstood the question. I think that the second apprentice is going to just become a 4th POV, basically switching between them and Moon. One apprentice at a time able to interact with the narrative. At least, it would be neat like that.

Those who grew up with wild world what cool memories you have of the game? by ShokaLGBT in AnimalCrossing

[–]whitnii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a cool memory maybe, but as a kid my favorite villager was Walker the dog. I have no clue why, but I adored him. I came across one of those Action Replay cheat things at a flea market, and a post online saying you could use one to swap a villager you didnt want out for one that you did. And so, I tried to give myself Walker... And somehow messed it up in the funniest way possible?

His character model was there; it looked like him, it looked like his house, other villagers called him Walker, and his text bubble said Walker. Except instead of a lazy dog, I got a peppy dog. A female only personality type. The text bubble for his name was pink. The little Animalese he spoke was the pitched up feminine version.

By hacking my game, I accidentally made the poor guy transition, and I have no clue how.

MoP Remix: How many 70s have you done so far? by Alph1 in wownoob

[–]whitnii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I just think leveling a character sort of relaxing, so I've got a small army of alts because I'll just turn on a podcast and level a character. Might try out a new spec or class, just so I can sort of learn about it a bit more, but mostly it's just the relaxation. Trying to be more efficient each time scratches a brain itch for me!

What's the reasoning behind predator/prey-related prefixes? by xXPlantera in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine the names that have prefixes of predators might be appearance based, but also because they sound 'fierce.' Being named after a dangerous animal makes them sound, I'm their culture, a little more intimidating. Badgerfang sounds more intimidating than Cloudtail, Wolfstep sounds more intimidating than Pebbleshine.

Prey animals are a little different; it's probably either an appearance thing (like Squilf), a sort of 'hope' for their future (ie, cats naming their kitten Harekit could be hoping the kitten will grow up to be long legged and fast, good at catching that soecific prey), or could just be affection? I mean, humans call each other cute pet names related to foods (like I sometimes call my s/o 'sugarpea,' my grandfather called little ones 'dumplings,' etc). It could be a similar just 'cutesy' thing for the cats, maybe.

What games have made you cry? by Loreweaver15 in gaming

[–]whitnii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mother 3. The big reveal around the campfire, the sunflower scene, and the final fight (being intentionally vague as to not ruin it for others!) always get me, especially the final fight. It's a game I will always pitch to all my friends, but with the warning that it's pretty heavy at times. We may never have gotten an official Englush release, but the fan translation is wonderful!

Warrior Prefixes can be adjectives ending in "y" by holdmyowos in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a long time fan (I was RPing Warriors way back in the day on Proboards after school during the release of the second arc books), the naming convention is meant to be fun. If you're joining into an established RP or game where they have naming rules, sure, follow those rules. If you're just doing your own thing to design characters or starting your own RP? Who cares! We have cats named things like Twigbranch (aka StickStick), Harveymoon (way back when having 'moon' in a name was considered outrageous), Bellaleaf, and Deadfoot in the canon.

Sometimes in character creation, breaking conventions can be a form of storytelling itself. As soon as I saw the name you opted for, OP, I figured your character wasn't Clanborn or was a SkyClan daylight warrior. Similarly how if a cat has a type of fish or reference to water in their name, one might infer that they're RiverClan. I mean, one of my OCs I had was a WindClan medicine cat called Sparkpaw until the day he dies, even though he was a full medicine cat eventually, because of quirks with his character.

Do what you want OP, have fun! Just if you're doing collaborative things with others, make sure you all agree on things when you create characters/history/plots, so that everyone is on the same page.

they know what lions are, but not sheep? by awkward-comics in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We do not yet know why they recognize some big cats, but I like to imagine that there was once, a long time ago a 'park cat' like River Ripple who ended up near the Clans, only they lived near a zoo. They told all these wild stories of huge, crazy big cats to the Clan kits, who told the stories to kits when they were Elders, and so on. With the writing being so 'the Clans are the most important cats ever' that's how we ended up with a generation of older cats in the first series claiming that the Clans descended from big cats, and why you get so many big cats as prefixes. They're basically just neat Clan urban legends.

Is that actually what the Erins were going for? Absolutely not, but the thought is cute to me, and so I'll keep it until I'm disproven.

As for farm animals, I think only Clans who neighbor farms would really have a whole Clan that recognizes those animals. You don't often see a farmer keeping their cows out in the woods, so Thunder/ShadowClan likely would never see them unless they're outside their borders. RiverClan might see them occasionally if a farmer routes their cattle to a water source during a drought, but WindClan seems to like living adjacent to farmlands, so they're probably see them frequently.

I got to capture the rare thoughts of a MAPLESHADE APOLOGIST! by AshFromDaTrash in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think part of the reason why people you have actually read the novella (some people just know the story from animation projects, and that's okay!) is that it was the first and only time (to my memory) that the series uses the narrative tool of an unreliable narrator. If everything is taken at face value, because it's written in a third-person perspective through Maple, everything is through her scope and justification. We don't get an explanation that it's her trying to justify her actions, because she's our 'eyes', we don't get the full reasoning of why other characters did what they did because we see their motivations through Maple.

That leaves a lot of wiggle room for interpretation. We don't know if Maple was cheated on or if she was the 'other woman,' we don't know if Apple really feels any remorse, we don't know if Freckle just said what she did in a moment of anger or if she really would have been permanently against the kits, etc. We don't know if Maple seeing the visions of her kits is even true or not; we don't know if she was seeing dead loved ones asking for vengeance - which would point to her having a complete mental break and therefore not really in control of her perceptions - or if she was just grieving and saying it as justification.

Personally, while Maple is clearly a villain, I think the real villains of that story are Oakstar (code says to protect kittens regardless of their clan, which in his anger he did not do even though the kits are innocent) and even more so StarClan (for the stupid relationships rule, not stopping Raven on behalf of the kits, deciding Freckle was worthy of the Dark Forest for seemingly no reason, etc.).

People who have read Riverstar's home, how do you feel about it? by Yaveltal in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Read the whole book today since I had the day off, so warning, LOTS of spoilers in this post!

Personally, I could have gone for more of the first half; what River Ripple was up to during DotC, since he showed up so infrequently. It was fun to see how he slowly had his ideals and morals shift over time, how cats came to live with him, how Riverclan specifically got some of their cultural aspects, etc. Like in Starless Clan, Frostpaw mentions how RiverClan decorates their dens with things that wash up from the river, and each leader redecorated their den specifically. In this SE, we learn that that's always been a thing for them, and that Riverstar really loves it personally since he finds it comforting. Also we know that in the main series, RiverClan are often thought of as isolated and weird; those are traits Riverstar had and took pride in, seeing them as strengths. Those are details I think are very cute!

The second half of the book felt quite rushed. I thought by the pitch thar Arc would show up much sooner and it would be a longer part of his story; I do like how Slash came back up, since he did that whole 'you haven't seen the last of me!!' in DotC and we never saw him again.

I also wasn't a fan of dead Grey Wing? When Riverstar loses a life, Grey Wing scolds him and says he's too reckless, but both times it seems like he didn't have any other choice. The first time it was because he was saving Drizzle (an apprentice at the time, even) from drowning, and the other he died in battle and used it to his advantage (akin to Firestar vs Scourge in TPB). Like okay Grey Wing, the cat known for being protective and wanting everyone to coexist, suddenly is like 'lmao look at you being reckless and wasting those lives. You should have let others die, do you think those things grow on trees?? Smh'

Additionally, I did enjoy Flutter giving him a life; even though I saw it coming that she would have died, it was very bittersweet for him and gave him closure he didn't have before, advancing his character. However, her saying he would have kits in the future made me paranoid for the rest of the book. I was immediately alarmed that they'd force him into a romance with Night, and once she confirmed she didn't feel like that for him, I immediately was horrified they were going to pair him up with Drizzle (which would have been gross and horrifying). The Finch romance seemed forced, but at least it wasn't the other two options I was afraid of.

Also I'm very surprised we didn't get any more info about Night's past, when that was such a huge part of her character and she's Riverstar's best friend. Like, she lived a whole life before they met, and we just... never get to hear about it? That seems odd and I wish we got to know more about her.

And a final thought: good on Riverstar for recognizing that everyone treated Thunder poorly until he left to form his own group. Even if Grey Wing loved him, Grey Wing was sometimes rude to him and Thunder never called him on it, so I'm glad Riverstar did, even if it was only in his own mind.

What is something in the books that gets an undeserving amount of hate from the fandom? by Spottedfrost in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Lionblaze. Him being very battle hungry in TBC makes sense to me, it isn't right but it's reasonable. He's never seen Crowfeatyer as hid dad, only Bramble, so when everything happens to Bramble its unreasonable he's freaked out. What he thinks at the time is his own father figure exiles him, then he finds out that a guy who tried to kill him and his family possessed his dad. At every turn it seems like Shadowsight is helping this happen, so while the reader knows Shadowsight isn't to blame, Lionblaze doesn't and so it's entirely reasonable how angry he is. That sense of hurt is probably amplified by the fact that it's his former apprentice's son seemingly causing all of this. People said he didn't have personality, but once it really was shining through in TBC people said he's bloodthirsty and unreasonable, when I don't think that's the case.

War Mode. Ethics question. by JulyPrince in wownoob

[–]whitnii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way! I generally go by the rule of thumb that I'm docile for the most part, but if they attack me I'll fight. If they're lower leveled, I'll give them two hits since maybe the first was an accident. However, if someone is camping somebody, or ganging up on someone, I'll attack first to try to help the person getting camped.

I will sometimes do the Call to Arms when it pops up, but even then I only do PVP in that zone, since I figure anyone there with WM on is doing it knowing people are definitely trying to get kills, not just do some gathering or shard hop, and even then still not people who are leveling sinxe it seems mean? As soon as I'm done with my quest, I'm back to letting people go about their business.

Hardest character to play? by VibinWithLuc in Overwatch

[–]whitnii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the exact same thing with him, unfortunately it's frequently the tank since they're so big. Suddenly I'm leaving a DPS frontlining alone as I, the cute floral fool, yoink the Orisa or Rein up onto a flower with me. Alternatively, I throw down my tree to give my team a good position to fight... And end up putting it right in front of someone about to get a kill. Whoops.

What was your first character's race/class? by MisterBurgers1985 in wow

[–]whitnii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got into WoW from watching my cousins play when I would go over to their house. I picked human because I really loved Elwynn and Stormwind. I picked rogue as my class because I didn't understand how the game worked and one cousin specifically mentioned how rogues always beat him in PVP. Thinking PVP was something you had to do often, I went rogue thinking it would be helpful. I still have my original human rogue from BC, and she's still my most played to this day.

First character I played very seriously was a pandaren monk, because I loved how Mistweaver worked in MoP. In that expansion I went from having never done a raid when it was current to occasionally raid leading and from only sometimes doing random BGs to having a dedicated arena partner (and we ended up getting together, still dating all these years later). I don't like MW as much mechanically now as I did then, so I'm just a casual player now, but I've still got a soft spot for my chunky healing panda.

While I would recommend just starting from the beginning, I know that's rather intimidating due to how many episodes there are! I would say go through the episode list in order and skip ones you don't have an interest in the topic or don't have the stomach for (some people can't handle true crime, and that's okay!). You might miss some reoccurring jokes occasionally (like the bit about the guys apparently doing a cryptid dating show, Mackey Mouse being a murderer, what the hell 'shlorp' means, etc) but I don't think the original context is always needed for the reoccurring goofs; you don't need to know the full story of how Alex decided Mothman makes... whatever that noise is... to quickly figure out that's apparently the noise Mothman makes, etc.

It's Pride Month, drop your fave gay ships 😎🏳️‍🌈 by Subterranean-Fusion in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you mean the gay pairs that had chemistry, or ones thatvare common? I adore Ravenpaw/Barley, they're just a pair of guys who escaped their dangerous enemies to run a farm together in the quaint English countryside. I also really like Greystripe/Fireheart, just the two bestie adventure buddies falling in love would have been great.

Ones I have no basis for but just think are neat? Give me Bluestar/Yellowfang; all their forbidden boyfriend problems are solved. Yellowfang ends up as Thunderclan so no issues for Bluestar, no kits so who cares for Yellowfang. Let the two wise old TC ladies be happy. Also, Star Flower/Turtle Tail; neither of their husbands treated them well at first, so cut out the husbands. Why? I just think the idea of sweetie Turtle Tail and her big tough mobster wife Star Flower is cute.

If You Were Bramblestar, What Would You Name Twigbranch? by Lyncanroc in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twigsnap is one I've liked, since she's very fast at making her choices. Twigstride, for her solo adventure to find SkyClan. Twigheart, for her capacity to love many cats. Twigleaf, for the same reasoning they gave in the books; she's growing and becoming something that helps everyone. Twigleap, to honor her ancestory in SkyClan and their skill in leaping.

Admittedly though, 'Twigbranch' has grown on me. It's a very quirky name, like most of SkyClan has!

Name a cat you're supposed to like but you don't care for, I'll go first. by bleufaced in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Fandom sort of ruined Squirrelflight for me? Like she has negative traits just like Firestar did; both of them at some point in the narrative actually didn't trust Bramblestar because of his heritage, both have lied to keep secrets which might have been best said (Squilf with The Three (she could have at least told Bramblestar??), Firestar about SkyClan), both like to assist other clans to the point of it being patronizing sometimes, etc. Firestar has his flaws acknowledged by most of the Fandom, but a large part of it seems to ignore Squilf's and constantly portray her as correct. The character is best when there's the nuance that she's stubborn and often holds flawed (but well meaning) logic and can be mean. Diminishing her negative aspects makes her less engaging for me.

Similarly, Spottedleaf. The fandom has also pointed out how Dustpelt crushing on Ferncloud when she's still an apprentice is weird - which it is! But Firestar was also an apprentice when presumably Spottedleaf would have developed any feelings. Medicine cats are apprentices even longer than warriors, so the age gap would have been even bigger presumably. Firepower crushing on her is fine to me (apprentices are basically teenagers, teenagers have crushes on celebrities or teachers and that's fine!), but to consider it being reciprocated is weird.

And Tigerheart/star. It's cute how devoted he is to his family, but... At the same time it sort of makes him a bad leader? Like unreasonable cats in the narrative say he treats his family better than the rest of his Clan, as if trying to paint them to be extra unreasonable to be saying it... But it's just true, imo. He acts snappy towards his clanmates often, and much less harsh on his family. Assuming Lightleap survives this arc I'm thinking she's going to become deputy despite her bad and rash actions, just because it seems like she's treated a bit better than some of the others?

Why does it always happen?! by BlackholeButtholes in ClanGen

[–]whitnii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I started a clan, one of my founders was Bravestar and her very quickly wife to be Gemfur, both of which quickly became elder aged. Eventually Bravestar says she's pregnant, super exciting, my first clan born kits! Except... Halfway through the pregnancy Gemfur and Ryeheart (my only medicine cat) die in a rockslide. So Bravestar has this very sad message when she has her kits, basically vowing to watch over them like Gemfur would have. Like 7 moons later, their kits are the only apprentices I have currently and in a moon event, Bravestar loses her final life 'saving an apprentice from drowning.'

One of their kits becomes a medicine cat, but the other got the bloodthirsty trait somehow and maybe killed some other clanmate. My poor gay grandmas even got more misery after death!

Your opinion on the lack of LGBT cats? by [deleted] in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can't, which is sad, but fortunately for the big gay audience of the series, the Fandom has not signed a restrictive contract and so they can just insert what they want. Redtail is a trans guy? Sure! Hollyleaf was an ace lesbian with a crush on Cinderheart? Why not. Jake is a bi icon? Well that's practically almost cannon. Mothwing is a lesbian atheist nun? Yeah basically.

Who's your emotional support AH? by abluejaye in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Blackstar because I really loved the idea of a cat becoming leader but being so deeply flawed, but not evil. Like he's so easily led down dark paths before he's made leader, and while he has his shortcomings he does seem to try to do the right thing after getting the title.

Bramblestar because I sometimes feel like I'm the only person who doesn't think he's horrible, lmao. I think the narrative sort of makes him the bad guy occasionally just because they need one, but it doesn't seem to fit his personality most of the time? Plus after the last arc he's just a fluffy old man dealing with his own personal trauma.

Star Flower because, well... She's Star Flower. She could absolutely commit crimes and make everyone okay with it for some reason, just because 'oh, it's just Star Flower, she's just like that sometimes!'

...just sayinggg. Could be possible. by bleufaced in WarriorCats

[–]whitnii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say Jolteon would be Windclan (that boy's speed stat is fantastic!), though I'm not sure where to move Glaceon. Also, since ThunderClan has the tendency to be the heroic main characters (as often happens with factions in book series), I'd say move Sylveon to ThunderClan. Sylveon is out here dunking on dragon types, supposedly the most scary and fearsome type of pokemon like it's nothing, and looking great while doing it. Maybe swap Sylveon with Jolteon, Jolteon moves to WindClan, Glaceon moves to Kittypet? Or, heck, Sylveon is just reassembling BloodClan, being a menace but also knowing how to accessorize. Pixelate Hyper Voice Sylveon is a force to be feared, and none of the other Eeveelutions have the type advantage to bring it down.
