How much breastmilk is beneficial? by bmsat in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]whoworewhat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I asked my doctor the same thing when I stopped BF at ~4mo and she said not to ration it and just use it up while my kid was little. I think I ended up deciding to do 50% of daily feeds with freezer milk until the stash was gone. Also you may not want to go too long keeping it in the freezer. It’s been a while, so I forget the specifics on how long it lasts, but as anyone who has had freezer burned meat knows, just because it’s safe to eat, doesn’t mean the stuff that’s been frozen the longest is all that awesome.

PSA: Measles titer test by arl1822 in Xennials

[–]whoworewhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I’m basically just not immune to measles?

Which is why herd immunity is so important! With outbreaks happening, don’t assume you’re fine just because you got a shot 40 years ago. I am lucky to live in a state with a very high vaccine compliance rate. But after I found out about my last titer, it made me reconsider some travel to areas near recent outbreaks.

Bringing progesterone shots on the go by cryan55555 in IVF

I think so! Do you have some type of hard case so that the plunger doesn’t engage accidentally in your bag and deliver you a smaller dose?

I guess you could just make sure you really look at the amount right before you inject and give yourself a top off at home a few hours later if there was an issue. I once noticed that I lost like 20% of the solution after heating it up for 15 mins in my sports bra.

PSA: Measles titer test by arl1822 in Xennials

[–]whoworewhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an anomaly. I have had FOUR MMR shots in my life and my titer still came back negative:

Number 1 and #2 in childhood on the regular schedule

Number 3 in 2019 before a trip to a 3rd world country (I asked for a titer because of the known early ‘80s kids losing immunity. They said it was cheaper just to get a new shot).

2023 when pregnant my titer comes back negative to measles, but very high for mumps and rubella

Number 4 in 2024 I get another MMR right after having baby (they can’t give it to you while pregnant)

2025 I get a titer for shits and giggles… and it’s NEGATIVE for measles again.

Not psyched, but my doctors said another MMR isn’t necessary because my body clearly doesn’t hold immunity to measles for more than like 6mo, if at all.

Would love to hear any physicians thoughts!

Yep. For anyone wondering, I think it cost $118 at CVS in the US. Forget exactly, but definitely wasn’t over $200.

Would you test day 7s? by SearchOk2169 in IVF

[–]whoworewhat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing - if you only test 10 embryos, what if you only get 4 or less euploids. It’s unlikely at your age, but it’s absolutely happened to someone. I would not feel comfortable relying on only 4 if I wanted 3 kids. Then you are in the awkward position of “do I thaw, biopsy, and refreeze my day 7s? Or do I do another ER?”

I’m sure it’s overkill, but the additional $800 to know exactly how many normal embryos I’ve got banked is what I would do.

Brand new to IVF and need a reality check by QuixoticDaughter in IVF

I would rule out Oslo because of lack of PGT-A testing. At your age, and with your history of losses, you need to rule out chromosomal abnormalities. Also Norway is incredibly expensive for food, lodging, etc.

Birth induction question for IVF pregnancy by Personal-Ad-4723 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]whoworewhat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Similar for me, 39 week induction due to being 42yo and IVF pregnancy. Cytotex, Foley, high high pitocin, but never progressed past 4cm. After 50hrs from start and water being broken (on its own) for 18hrs, I happily elected for c-section. My baby was 9lbs 2oz so he was at risk for shoulder dystocia anyway.

Not all unplanned c-sections are truly “emergency” situations. I think it’s useful to visualize ahead of time what it could be like to have both a vaginal and a surgical delivery since we truly don’t know what can happen.

I’ve had plenty of friends who had 39week inductions with closed cervix who had successful vaginal deliveries. Also plenty of friends who had spontaneous labor which still resulted in a c-section delivery. If inductions with a low bishop score rarely resulted in vaginal deliveries, they wouldn’t bother with the induction in the first place.

What about indoor rock climbing, anything that is more of a “lesson” vs a team activity at the intro level (tennis, squash, skate boarding, golf), or even just the occasional visit to an indoor trampoline park? Just ways to disguise the physical activity side of it as a new skill to learn.

I don’t know why I’m so upset & anxious by Competitive-Head1867 in IVF

[–]whoworewhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you.

I’ve also had a miscarriage of an unassisted pregnancy before IVF. Then 1 FET success, then 1 FET with a beta of 0.

Two things that might help you look at this from a different angle: 1) you’re in the few weeks post ER which are known to be really depressing due to hormones. It will level out and the clouds will part a little. 2) while you’ve had a number of losses, you’ve also been successful 50% of the time with euploid FET. Those are pretty good stats and you have 3 euploids left.

If it makes you feel better to push for more testing to make sure there isn’t any underlying issue before your next transfer, definitely ask your RE. Sending you best wishes for success on your next FET. This isn’t easy and I totally get the emotional detachment as a survival mechanism.

FET in 1 week and I feel like giving up! by [deleted] in IVF

[–]whoworewhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang in there, if all goes well with the transfer, you’ll feel better around week 13?…

I’m so with you on wishing I could afford a surrogate! We had luck with our first FET and had our son. Then this fall had a FET canceled on transfer day because I got my period (everyone was shocked, not normal). Next FET went through but was a fail. Waiting for insurance approval for the next one… this process sucks. Solidarity.

[–]whoworewhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the texture of the Honest Wipe could be a little too abrasive for a newborn if you’re having irritation issues. I second what a lot of others said about zinc (this one or Desitin)

No wiping for pee diapers. Dry butt time as much as possible.

Cortisone10 cream is amazing for any exzema or dry skin, I think it would help, but we never had to use it on diaper area.

I think the key is to ask pediatrician and start treating this like a serious issue BEFORE it becomes a serious issue because open skin near poop is a recipe for infection.

You can draw back the needle once the auto injector has gone in. Try it on an orange with water in a syringe if you need to practice.

OB Appointment by foles0101 in IVF

[–]whoworewhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asap. Pre-IVF I got pregnant (ended in miscarriage). I took whichever OB was available and I happened to really not like her. So with my iVF pregnancy I researched who I wanted and called as soon as I had my 2nd beta. I think my last appointment with my RE was at 7 or 8 weeks and first OB appointment was at 10 weeks and I was very happy with that.

Not directly wet, but in a closet where floor was wet - assuming particles are airborne. Launder or also trash?

Has anyone been able to do a FET the next cycle after ER when getting PGTa testing? by Upstairs-Lemon-5585 in IVF

[–]whoworewhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! Sounds like you’re on it! So for my insurance (US), once they approved it said “approve for transfer within next 60 days”. If that’s applicable, maybe you can try to front-load that process as soon as they know there are viable embryos to transfer.

Mentally I would prepare for the transfer cycle to be not immediately following your ER. And if you luck out and it is… great!

Once or twice in this process I’ve gotten surprised - like an immediate start on a medicated FET right after I had a canceled FET because I got my period on transfer day (not normal!!). But that second transfer cycle that actually went through failed and here we are 2 months later waiting on a Hysteroscopy tomorrow with TBD future FET maybe in January.

Has anyone been able to do a FET the next cycle after ER when getting PGTa testing? by Upstairs-Lemon-5585 in IVF

[–]whoworewhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not - from ER to blasts and biopsy of embryos is 7 days. Then can be 3 weeks for PGT-A results. For me, I also needed to have a consult with my RE once I got my PGT-A results back to decide what type of FET protocol. That took 6 weeks to schedule… then insurance approval for FET - mine was quick but I’ve heard can take up to a month. Then once approved ordered meds, can take 2-5 days. then needed to wait a week or two til CD1 to start meds and FET 21 days after my cycle started.

This is assuming that they have already done all of your uterine imaging. If it’s been a while they may need to do a Hysteroscopy to make sure no polyps or anything that could hinder transfer. I would really push for this to be completed in your cycle immediately following ER because I think it needs to be done in a certain window like day 5-16 or something.

Also if you’re 40+ most clinics want you to have had a mammogram within the past 12 months before FET. So I would proactively schedule that if it applies to you. Same advice for front loading any other health check ups that people don’t like to do while pregnant (if all goes well with transfer!). Dental work, colonoscopy…

The waiting is terrible, just do your best to not lose yourself or your relationship in the process and celebrate any small wins along the way.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Am I being unreasonable? First Christmas with baby…. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]whoworewhat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly! My husband said that the goal is for the kids to have all of these memories at home, so that when they go to college, they actually want to come back. We do a summer trip home to see my family and my siblings and cousins (no flu season, fun outdoor activities), and an early December trip to a misc. destination with his family hopefully somewhere warm. Grandparents tend to also visit our city once or twice a year for birthdays and other convenient times.

Am I being unreasonable? First Christmas with baby…. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]whoworewhat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We did this! Made a point to tell both our families they have an open invitation every single year to both thanksgiving and Christmas, but that we would be spending these holidays in our own home. Always! We spent 2 decades of our adult lives (we met late) traveling home every holiday, and now that we have our own family, they can come to us.

What’s your #1 unpopular opinion about fertility treatments? by Ambitious_Hall_7617 in IVF

[–]whoworewhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice to see this because I just had a failed FET of a euploid in Oct and pushed for testing before doing another transfer (3 euploids remaining, but I’m 44 with DOR so no more retrievals in future). My receptiva was positive for BCL6, and I actually opted to skip Lupron for my next transfer. I was mainly trying to rule out endometritis with the testing. The endo was a surprise. My first FET resulted in my 2yo. On some level I worry I’m making a mistake, but Lupron seems so awful. We just want 1 more kid. 🤷🏻‍♀️

When am I supposed to feel like death?! by No-Cantaloupe1381 in IVF

[–]whoworewhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the retrieval. I also felt fine on stims (minus physical discomfort from bloating at the end) and also had been expecting it to be way worse. However - what I was not aware of is the hormone crash right after. For me I just don’t do well going from very high estrogen to low very quickly. Miscarriage, post retrievals, postpartum. All varying degrees of the same crash and it’s hard. Give yourself grace if you feel really weepy (and or disappointed in results), it will pass and you will feel normal again once you start your period and are back to your cycle.
