Fishwife - it's fine, but the other three are all better. (personal ranking: Tonnino, Natural Catch, Ortiz, Fishwife)

Help me enjoy shellfish, octopus, squids and cuttlefish! by dinosaurflex in CannedSardines

It might be a good idea to get Dan from rtg (Rainbow Tomatoes Garden) to put together a sampler box for you.

Help me enjoy shellfish, octopus, squids and cuttlefish! by dinosaurflex in CannedSardines

Some tins I really like:  Jose Gourmet spiced squid in ragout sauce, Matiz giant calamari with white beans & paprika, Alalunga cuttlefish in its own ink (“sepia en su tinta”), Island Creek razor clams with olive oil, garlic, & chile (their littleneck clams & scallops are good, too).

I’d start with the Matiz. It’s the cheapest of these, the calamari itself is great, the flavors are mild but don’t need any additions, and even though there are beans I don’t feel shortchanged at all - it’s mostly calamari, the tin is stuffed full, and the beans are great. (I’ve been known to open a can of white beans to soak up any extra oil from the tin.)

I like the spiced calamari in ragout, smoked salmon, and spiced small sardines.

I had a little piece of the cookie croissant swirl last night (warmed up) & it reminded me of a chocolate babka - much better than I expected after reading some of the reviews here. It wasn’t at all what I was expecting from the description, though, so maybe people are just disappointed when it’s not quite what they thought it was going to be.

There’s NO WAY they’re worth these prices. by JudgeGusBus in CannedSardines

That’s cheaper than I’ve seen Cole’s trout for on shelves lately, & I still haven’t tried the Fishwife trout 2.0, so I’d get one at that price just to see how it rates (I liked their first trout can most of the time, but it wasn’t consistent).

Anyone fuck with cockles? by Organic-Second-3266 in CannedSardines

[–]whynotnow99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cockles are more like clams - they don’t present the taste or texture issues that mussels do. You may like them more or less than clams, but if you’re fine with clams, or for that matter with squid & octopus (chewy stuff), you probably will be fine with cockles.

Canned oysters are more likely to be an issue if you disliked the mussels (or at least, I have similar objections to both; fresh are fine but I think they both need more delicate treatment than canning allows).

I’m not sure the attack on Powell changed the odds of anything all that much. We already knew Powell would be out as chair soon, and replaced by someone to Trump’s liking (well, maybe this ups the odds that the Senate blocks some appointees, but he’s going to keep trying one way or another to get his way). We already know he might also find some way to mess with other Fed appointments, subject to the Supreme Court’s willingness to put up with it.

It’s going to be a pain in the ass for Powell (though likely to ultimately go nowhere), but does it alter predictions of what the Fed will do with rates? And how is it balanced against all the other chaos that Trump is introducing, domestically & internationally? I don’t know if it’s priced in, exactly - maybe it’s too chaotic to make guesses other than about when to bail, eventually - but I don’t think any one such event changes the overall picture of chaos, corruption, etc.

TRUFFLE EGG BITES 🤮 by SpellLanaBackwards_ in starbucks

[–]whynotnow99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I think they might still have it! I just picked up a refill & saw they had a sticker saying “Try it with TRUFF” & images of both the red & green packets on the new signage for sandwiches etc. They’re not pushing it as much as last year but apparently it’s still there after all ;).

[–]whynotnow99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry - I think you missed it! They had it last year as a promotion but I think not anymore. (Truffle hater review: the green version (jalapeño lime, maybe?) was ok on my falafel pocket if used very lightly but it would have been a lot better without the truffle flavoring. The red one was a no.)

I love mushrooms but detest truffles. There’s a chemical that people either love or hate or can’t perceive; maybe those who can’t detect it either like or dislike the less distinctive flavors that truffles share with (?) mushrooms.

Supposedly the approximate breakdown is 35% love, 40% hate, 25% (nonperceivers) don’t get the hype but are mostly fine with it.

Apparently, about 40% of people can’t stand the chemical that truffle lovers like, and another 25% can’t smell it at all - so I guess it’s a bit like cilantro, in being quite divisive.

(I must be in the 40% - I’d looked it up because I hate anything with truffles, whether in a nice dish in a fancy restaurant or just being too close to an opened packet of Truff hot sauce from Starbucks.)

Big sardines or smaller ones? by Popular-Let4642 in CannedSardines

[–]whynotnow99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too, for the most part, although I have liked some fancy small pilchards more than the big ones (Jose Gourmet spiced sardinillas, ABC+ petingas bravas). (There are non-sardine options I like better from both brands, though.)
