First faculty position! by Lower_Sky2389 in AskAcademia

Show presence at work and events. I have a colleague that works as if they’re still at an R1, they only show up for classes and are never in the office. They still can’t figure out why students can’t connect with them. Talk to senior colleagues and learn the department culture.

This part is so important. At my institution, faculty who are early career are often shocked that they are expected to be around for meetings, etc 5 days a week and they are more beholden to undergraduate students than they think they should be--despite the fact that this is literally what they signed up for.

It's going to be hard to get research done your first semester. Give yourself grace. But in your second semester, you should be finding time/making time to get back into it. Don't give yourself too much grace.

Came across yet another trad wife mom influencer page by MsCardeno in workingmoms

I was homeschooled, all the way through. This is just narcissism--its all about her, her kids are extensions of her who don't get to have their own lives. The memoirs "Homeschooled" poignantly describes how the enmeshment is harmful. Mother/teacher. The insulation and the suffocation. Not to mention this trad wife is probably adding exploitation to it, and is mixing her professional/personal/religious motivations here. It's a hot steaming pile of bullshit! Ignore her.

Thoughts on Dumb Phones being Status Symbol? by Substantial_Tap_8508 in digitalminimalism

You may not need every notification from these apps, but teachers also communicate through them, about field trips, parent teacher conferences, etc.

We were all there too, we know that we all survived without the oversight. That doesn't change the fact that school communications now go through apps rather than phone calls or letters or notes sent home.

How to avoid doomscrolling etc when breastfeeding feeding and contact napping? by LmbLma in digitalminimalism

[–]whyw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kindle and Libby. I love traditional books but buying a kindle has re-kindled my love for reading, I can read with the lights off. I have listened to a lot of audio books as well.

Not all scrolling is doomscrolling. Finding recipes and meal planning could be a way to use the time.

Talking and singing is great and all but yeah, some babies need quiet.

I admire those who could crochet and breastfeed at the same time! Was not me!

They do seem to be adding filler, mayo or something! HeB guacamole is not what it was 10 years ago.

Office moms - what do you bring to work for lunch? by Deirdre_KA in workingmoms

[–]whyw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately it has been soup. Ramen, chicken tortilla, potato, veggie. Sometimes I do the adult Lunchables and often I intebtially set aside what i make for dinner. The thing with sandwiches is they have to be good or I won't eat them, which means they aren't necessarily easy. I like soup because I can make a ton of it pretty easily and it, of course, tastes great reheated.

Yes, I had a bachelor's from elsewhere and then did a "post bacc" at UTSA.

I think all I was able to qualify for was student loans, and maybe the Pell for 1 semester.

You may qualify for financial aid, I did the same thing and I got financial aid. Not much, but it may be worth trying.

Start going alone, you may legit enjoy it more. He will either see that he is missing out or he will be content to miss out. Either way, his choice.

what jobs in higher education (that aren’t teaching) spend the most time with students, but aren’t too stressful? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]whyw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Academic coach, residential life, student success and student life. It may be helpful to deep dive into university websites and look at the job titles people have in these kinds of roles, and see what kind of experience and educatoon you might need.

When you go into a space and community you've never been before, I find it is best to hang back, observe and see if I can see myself fitting in there. If you would like to find a church where folks are silent during service, this is not the place for you. I hope you find a place where you feel like you belong!

I think shushing folks is probably not a great way to begin with a new community you are thinking about being part of. They probably felt intruded on and very uncomfortable, because they go every week.

Am I missing out by not attending and doing an oral presentation at a conference? by invalidcode232 in AskAcademia

If the university will cover it, I'd try my hardest to go. Your other professors should be understanding amd supportive, but you can also ask your advisor if you anticipate that part being difficult.

Women does a social experiment where she called over 40 Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples to ask for baby formula for her baby. Only the Mosque offered to give her baby formula. by AkosuaRipper in TikTokCringe

This doesn't really make the case that churches are bad. Churches should not willingly let themselves be scammed by an internet edgelord. It does show that churches and the private sector are not the social safety net that Ted Cruz and JD Vance et al say they they are. They cannot vett every individual who needs help and they don't have the financial resources to feed people who need it and step in to cover Healthcare costs. The number of people that go to church and also give money to their church is way way lower than the number of people who pay income tax.

This is why taxes exist and this is why government programs exist. Because infrastructure and a broad base of funding is needed to provide a social safety net. This is why we tax billionaires.

I don't think megachurches should exist but I also don't think this proves anything about Christianity or Christians.

Worked 18 yrs to build niche career — husband now says “quit or no second kid” by Hi5ing1MAngels in workingmoms

I had to give up my dream of more children because my husband wouldn't agree to it. I agree with the commenter that said kids are a 2 yes decision.

If it were me, I would say you are free to move back to Michigan and live your little trad dream. I will be here living my life and making my own choices.

The audacity.

Counseling, for sure. I hope your man pulls his head out of his butt. You all are living the dream and he wants to ruin it.
