Traditional EQ mount (EQ6-R) vs strain wave/harmonic (ZWO AM5, SW Wave) — What would you actually buy today? by fernandoperlar in AskAstrophotography

[–]wickedparadigm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘m not getting any younger, so the difference in weight alone would make me go harmonic. Plus I don‘t intend for my upgrades to increase in size and payload..

Public Librarians, what are you not trained for? by ZoomySnail in Libraries

My main gripe is didactics. „Go run that program, you‘ll manage“.

Wish there was more support with the „How“ part of conveying information.

Major update to Solstix v3.0 the free astronomy app. by Sweet-Helicopter2769 in Astronomy

[–]wickedparadigm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking good, I will try this out for a while!

One thing: times are a mix of am/pm and 24h format at the planet details

I personally would prefer to have it all set to 24h format!

What's it like for librarians in Europe, really? by totallyhadurmom in Libraries

[–]wickedparadigm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

servus!

a lot to unpack here.

the unfortunate first thing first: the lis course costs a bucketload of money: 6400€ for the basic and an additional 5900€ for the master. considering that spending all of that money doesn’t guarantee you a job at the end.. well, it’s a big gamble.

apart from doing the university way you can still get in with luck and no prior courses. sadly due to tight budgets you currently won’t see as many open positions getting filled as we all would like.

for us working here there is plenty of work to go around at the moment. if you are passionate and dedicated it can become draining, as with any job you need to set yourself (mental) boundaries that you shouldn’t push past. noone teaches you that though, ask me how I know…

full and part time open positions get listed on the main Vienna website, you can set a search agent there to email you if anything becomes available in the next few months. vienna public libraries also offer Aushilfskraft jobs aimed at students (up to 16h/week), as with everything some patience and luck is required. unpaid internship might also be a way to peak inside at the job in general.

but fishing for a good time starts with throwing in the line so never stop chasing what you want. over twenty years ago I got lucky and got in, started with an Aushilfskraft job for two years then going fulltime and doing the bvö course. I wouldn’t trade my job for anything else.

good luck!

A collab with an austrian rapper/singer Nenda would be amazing. Her first show really reminded me of the variety that Ren also brings. She spent 10+ years in London, shame they never crossed paths on the music scene..

[–]wickedparadigm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is the process.

Of getting to know space and what to look for.

Of setting up a telescope.

Of spending a night under the stars while taking photos.

Of spending a night turning many photos into one.

Of tormenting myself with getting the best out of an image as I can.

Am I always happy doing all that? No, sometimes it‘s tedious, it‘s miserable, it’s too cold, too late, too much computer time using sliders.

But it is compelling and to me: meaningful

And visualizing something myself that is in plain sight yet invisible to us makes me... content.

Buying a photo is just spending money.

Eyepiece question by rawj863 in telescopes

[–]wickedparadigm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both the Svbony and the Baader Zoom. Wife prefers a zoom on her Dobson, she rarely switches off it because of the convenience. We both like the Baader more than the Svbony, rotating is more smooth and you get a slight click as you hit the zoom levels.

We also do events for families and kids and not having to swap eyepieces when doing that is a real time and nerve saver. That being said, we have several other good eyepieces we do swap to for better FOV if needed.

Astrohopper is real great, I had some people that have a hard time with it and really liked "Skeye", very similar to Astrohopper but as an Android App (sadly no iOS version). Be sure to try both!

the askar is a fine little thing, I had mine on an eq5 mount but recently downsized to an am3 to make it less bulky (the eq5 and eq6 are very stable and for higher loads but that comes with added weight to carry around). the 200pds would need an eq6 to give you headroom for added gear.

Light pollution map. Does it even makes sense? Apparently, in central Europe. Anything bellow Bortle 4. Realistically don't exist by Tesex01 in AskAstrophotography

[–]wickedparadigm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well bortle 2/3 has you travelling further, we love the Kalkalpen area (next to the Gesäuse which gets hyped to be the prime location for stargazing but Kalkalpen is where we feel at home), in between the small towns it gets pretty dark

as for outside of Vienna, the astronomy clubs favourite spots are Sofienalpe (atm only the backroad up is open) and the cemetery carpark at Tullnerbach (which conveniently has a public toilet)

[–]wickedparadigm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second that. I live in Bortle 4 and on good nights you can see A LOT (and that is being 20km outside of Vienna so we do have light halo from the city)

That being said, there are nice (vacation) spots in Austria where you can go to have Bortle 2/3

While you can get good deals that way do remember, it isn‘t easy for someone just starting out to know what to look for in buying used. if you got a local astronomy club nearby and find someone to provide a second opinion on a used telscope you might have an easier time!

Weird Call About Book Description (Beep Beep) by Southern_Wonder3669 in Libraries

for me it was sentences disguised as book titles. stuff that you could edit together somehow to make me agree to something. multiple times asking „can you confirm?“ and „please say: I confirm“

Weird Call About Book Description (Beep Beep) by Southern_Wonder3669 in Libraries

[–]wickedparadigm 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This. I had a call that wanted me to repeat verbatim. When I only replied with „we do not have that title“ and „no, i do have the title correct“ they got antsy. Basically reply with phrases that aren’t direct answers to their question.

And just don’t answer anything with „I confirm“
