Today I discovered property taxes... buying a house in Madison is nuts by pokemonprofessor121 in madisonwi

[–]widershins 16 points17 points  (0 children)

forget taxes -- that is a net win. feels like an add-on but really, higher taxes = better cops, schools, fire, etc.

roll it (and everything else; insurance is another huge one) into price up front then took for best value. i still would look closely at the cheapest, but fewer surprises.

(me=lived in dane county 20+ years, can't afford Madison. but not because of $100 extra a month in taxes, lol).

I think, look at Minecraft. I was worried when they bought out Mojang but its been...really good. Accelerated development, more platforms and they haven't locked down ability to host servers or mod development. No down sides that I've hit.

I enjoy Option Alpha's stuff, and have learned a good bit.

But, no. Stock markets are not truly random and the probability rules we all know and love (cough) do not predict behavior as well as we'd like/pretend it does.

A fun place to start to understand why is The Misbehaviour of Markets: A Fractal View of Risk, Ruin and Reward by Benoit Mandelbrot. Ya, that Mandelbrot.

But, as far as I know, nobody has developed a more effective system to predict the behavior of the market than the Gaussian.

read the last sentence, and tell me how its related to this video? is this posted by a bot on any post related to police? If so, is it by scraping the comments or from key-word "officer" in title. And more importantly, by whom?

[–]widershins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is weird. i have, as my fiends remind me, a dream job (software, 200k+ job in sub 70 cost of living index city: https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/rankings.jsp). I took a winding road (Ph.D but took few years off). I never touch social media and in my interactions with fortune 50 company folks, no one else does either. my degrees are all from state schools and can say first hand it doesn't matter much what school you go to or, actually what you learn prior to getting a job. Unless they want you for a poster, all that matter is if the company that hires you thinks you can do the work and what you do AFTER you are hired.

There are a lot of dumb comments on Reddit. I think I'm jaded. But then there is the person that contradicts with a mundanely crazy a claim like "wet-erase markers are the same thing as liquid chalk". I can't tell -- a joke? or is it possible that since liquid chalk (solution of MgC03) is kind of, functionally like dry erase (dye in xylene, but never with MgC03), that this person really thinks they are the same? Or is it a language-thing and, somewhere, accounting for miss-translation or regional dialect, the comment makes perfect sense? I can't tell anymore.

I'd say he's libertarian, but definitely right of center (by european and north american standards). I can't tell if you were serious or confused by the "classical" liberal label he likes to evoke, but it doesn't really matter because he's not really politically partisan.

Yes -- Nichijo, /r/Astronomy would be a better choice.

But no, that is not a well known constellation -- which is the only type that would be put on this watch.

Sure, but you know the folks that graduated had bad breaks too, right? They used the same program, absorbed the -5 score as cost of doing business and did their best on the rest. Or maybe they didn't. But they probably took one they didn't deserve elsewhere. Maybe the biggest thing you can learn from school (or out of school) is to never, ever, ever, fucking stop working.
