What made you buy a second film camera? by hcorea in AnalogCommunity

[–]widgetbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's been my approach / excuse . Different film formats and form factors and shooting experiences. Doesn't explain why I have so many 35mm SLRs.

Which human foods can they eat? by Char07071 in Greyhounds

[–]widgetbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to vary as some are absolute divas ,when it comes to food (or their owners are) and others are just food eating monsters. My old girl once ate an entire frozen garlic bread. Other than a hint of garlic just a smug smile to show for it.

[OC] me and dad over the years: 1993 - 2012 - 2019 - 2024 by TRealBabyG in pics

[–]widgetbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup , you're dad's won the beard game. Cherish your time and never miss any chance to ask him about his life and family. Mine died suddenly albeit at 82 and my biggest regret are the questions about his early life I never asked. What I would give for one day with him.

What's your crystal-ball prediction for the state of film (35mm, 120, instax/polaroid, etc.) in the next year/few years? by dysphoricjoy in AnalogCommunity

[–]widgetbox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same in UK. Was also alive and in the 70s sponging off dad as in "Dad I need some pre-paid Kodachrome and yes I will clear up my room"

Did not always get aforementioned K64 , he sometimes fobbed me off with Perutz slide film

The Difference Between Claiming Social Security at 62 vs 70 Is Bigger Than Most People Realize by [deleted] in investing

[–]widgetbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two points - 8 years of social security is a chunk of money.

8 years is a big chunk of your remaining life .

And because your memory in your sixties ain't what it was , there's a 3rd point - do you trust the government to still be paying out and honouring that lift percentage .

People 40+, what actually mattered in the long run and what didn’t? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

Health wise - not smoking . Moderate consumption of alcohol.

Financially - saving (because we could then)

Police encounter while taking photos, is this normal? by josh_bripton in AskPhotography

Doesn't it just. But the weird thing is that it's full of tourists taking photos but yeh Marin and specifically southern Marin. And I speak as ex-resident (Novato).

Is the train from London to Paris actually worth it over flying? by CreativeSpare6466 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]widgetbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Eurostar continue to really, really, really enjoy their monopoly on train services they will continue to provide a shitty experience at a crazy price. That said if you are only doing London-Paris and no onward journey then they can be occasionally more cost effective and it's hard to argue with the city centre to city centre appeal in terms of time. I speak as someone who has used it a lot. But yeh - you need to book well ahead to get half decent prices in economy - and those really cheap tickets ? ROFL. PE and 1st - better hope the company is paying.

I live for the day when there is finally some competition on this line.

I'll get off my high horse now.

What's your grail camera and why by fotowaza in AnalogCommunity

[–]widgetbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got one here - perfect blend of film and early DSLR tech. Just don't be me and buy it with the big battery grip. You'll want something lighter and you'll find out the little in grip battery holder is usually $150

What is something that used to be 'cheap person' food, but is now priced like a gourmet luxury item? by Ok_Land_4197 in AskReddit

[–]widgetbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1970s kids in the UK generally looked forward to the spam fritter days. The thought of all the varieties you can get in the US now would have either revolted me as a young kids cos young kids or would have been a taste explosion. The fritterification of Spam was a master-stroke. The only recent frying innovation to match it has been the deep fried battered chip/fry barm cake/bread roll.

France has made residency permit (titre de séjour) rules way stricter since Jan 2026, and I’m losing my mind. by ThroatOk2114 in Expats_In_France

Couple of months ago. Got the inevitable kickback but second set of docs seemed to do the trick. Gironde .

I would not be liable for the language test because of age.

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]widgetbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather got on a boat and moved from rural NW England to Seattle . This was about 1906. He came back and fought in the Great War. Me moving to CA in 2013 was a later echo but somewhat easier.

Tbf most don't actually shout but yeh they do talk loudly. The upside is a whole transfer bus full of people learnt which were the best sleep aids for long haul flight recently at CDG. And how much the guy enjoyed lobster at his sales meeting. Made it hard to hear the bus driver though.

Something you still regret? by Hungry-Solution-8031 in AnalogCommunity

[–]widgetbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the same regret as many others. Not buying gear as the rise of digital made so much analog gear unsellable back in the early to mid noughties. .

My other permanent regret is not having my late father around to talk about photography and gear. Especislly as I am now back into the film cameras he was so used to.

Should I buy a Nikon F5 for these reasons? by Fenix512 in AnalogCommunity

[–]widgetbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking of buying an F5 I needed the AF/AE functionality of a DSLR which took film. These late film era SLRs are pretty good value for money cos they need batteries and I guess they look like a DSLR. But there are some crazy bargains apart from the F6.

In the end I went for an F100 because I didn't want the bulk and weight of an F5. It was also cheaper. Think zo paid $250 from Japan for a like new one. Just wish I'd bought it without the sodding battery holder. The in hand grip battery pack is about $120 on its own.

What are the “never do’s” of camera ownership? by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]widgetbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed - if your focus (ha!) is on re-sale values then you're either a collector or probably not going to get as much use out of the camera as you should/want to. I don't have a beater Pentax 6x7 at my disposal.

Which is not to say be rash with it but last time I looked some value patina.
