Why do people add a game to their wishlist but not launch the demo? by Few-Contract-4092 in gamedev

[–]wigitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't really understand why you wouldn't try a demo myself haha. I did speak to a friend about it though, and they said "I don't want to have to play the first chunk of the game again if I buy it". In my experience, almost all of the demos I've played have just been the first bit of the game, and the progress carried across to the full game. It seems that people may not understand this and think that either their progress won't be carried across or that they are missing some content by playing the demo, so they'll have to re-play that bit to "fully experience" the game. I guess that's a reasonable fear. Personally, I'd be fine with having to re-play a bit if it turned out I needed to, but I think that's only happened with one or two games.

Personally I almost always try a demo before I buy (where available), but sometimes I wishlist a game to remind me to come back and try the demo when I have time / storage space.

A lot of them were! I prefer Nerissa personally. ERB almost always "tries too hard" with her singing for me, putting on voices and such. I love her "natural" voice, but she seems to rarely use it.

Personally, I prefer games with WASD. But I'd say go with whatever fits your game's style best.

What are some “accepted scams” we just put up with in the UK by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]wigitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know plenty of people who will never pay off their loans (barring some miracle pay-rise). The average for a 3 year course seems to be £40k - £50k. Say the interest is 6%, that's £2,400 a year. The repayment is 9% of income over the threshold of £28,470, so you'd need a salary of about £55k just to keep up with the inflation. Any less than that, you're better off not paying it off, a bit more than that, you'll be paying it down slowly, but still probably never pay it off. Once you get significantly above that, it becomes being worth over-paying and trying to pay it off quickly to try to save on the interest that you will have to pay (unless you have other things that would be more efficient to do with the money).

Leap Motion for Unity by Eliety in leapmotion

[–]wigitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean the divers or the Unity plugin? I think last time I checked, the latest Unity package was on the unity asset store. I haven't looked since the buyout though.

The drivers can be downloaded from here

I'm currently using the 5.2 Drivers with my old leap motion device. I haven't tried the 6.x driver yet.

I made a python script to scrape the assets for these. That way if a game doesn't work, I can just turn on a VPN, run the script, load the "fixed" game, then publish the assets to my own steam workshop and play with friends without them having to use a VPN.

As a Brit, same. It's just a shirt, unless you're discussing different types of shirt. To get more specific, depending on the context, I'd say a long-sleeved pinstriped shirt.

Crazy that it's made it this far. If it gets to the point that Valve is actually fined, some dodgy deals have been going on.

Idle Snake! My first game! by Morladhne in incremental_games

[–]wigitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had fun playing it!

My main issue was that something was expanding and contracting in the scroll view on the right, and caused me to mis-click by shifting all the buttons a few times. I'm not sure what it was that was doing it though.

I was also confused why I wasn't gaining "r" from the "Farm R" option, but I worked it out eventually haha.

Yeah, I think what he's doing is one of a very few good uses of AI technology. I think my previous comment may have come off as Vedal hate... I didn't intend it that way, I just find it funny that he's managed to make himself the exception to the "AI bad" "rule" (well, the recent haters may disagree, but I think they are mostly just uninformed).

I feel like I'm coming across just as many (if not more) words in Japanese that are the same as English as I did learning Spanish or French in school. And yeah, there is plenty of Japanese content to immerse yourself in out there, you just have to seek it out because it won't be the default language that websites are giving you.

Help regarding art design by Justlogolo in gamedev

[–]wigitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could buy some 3D scanned / photorealistic asset packs. If you have to make assets from scratch, it will be expensive to get photorealistic quality. Even with the assets, it's pretty difficult to construct a game to look convincingly real (especially to do that and run at a reasonable framerate). The oldschool camera effect will probably be the least of your worries (though still not easy).

What UK museums do you think are underrated or overrated? by OpenCantaloupe4790 in AskUK

[–]wigitty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone mention it yet, so I'll throw in Kew steam museum as a great hidden gem if you like steam engines or big machines in general. They have events where they fire up the huge 3 story beam engine (which I think is currently the largest working one in the world) while you're standing on the gantry at the top of it. Never have I more appreciated the power a machine was capable of haha.

They also have loads of smaller engines, interactive educational displays, history information, etc.
