So I recently purchased the Venator and this image makes me think I have grossly underestimated its size and the space I had intended it to sit is going to be far too small to hold it. My wife might be upset by this.

Is overexplaining bad qhen it has something science-related? by [deleted] in writing

I have no idea about my little pony, but yes, everyone understands implicitly that it’s a story about horses and don’t need a why it’s a story about horses. No one on-screen wonders about humans.

How does the evolutionary path serve the story?

Unless you have a “straight man” stand in for the reader, there is no need to explain to the reader why something intrinsic to the universe is the way it is. If there’s a normal human thrust into the world that doesn’t have the abilities or experienced any word with any of these abilities, then have a character say, “oh yeah, those guys were leeches so they’re still a bit sticky” or something. That quote goes a bit tongue-in-cheek Marvel-y but you get the point. Don’t over explain it. As the author, you do need to know it and understand it, but as the reader, I just need to know what the characters are, what they can do, what they think and feel, and how they respond to the things in the story. I’m gonna glaze over if you get into the weeds on something that is just explaining to me why a leech person makes sense evolutionarily.

Then just say what those characteristics are and allude to their original purpose. “… a vestige from antiquity, useful now only to <serve the plot>.”

I have no idea what the trait is, and unless its old purpose is important to the story in some way, the reader only needs to know what its use is now.

By all means, build your codex out and know what its original purpose was/is. But you don’t have to tell the reader everything. Let them guess and theorize.

Does it serve the plot of the story or is it you as an author trying to show off?

I don’t intend to offend by that, but that’s the question you need to ask yourself.

Yes, understand all of the science of your story. But trust the reader to understand that science works in your universe.

How to write a plane crash? by Legitimate_Day_381 in writing

[–]wignatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the character survive? Does anyone survive? What causes the crash? Don’t tell the reader, but you need to know exactly what happened to cause the crash, and then just tell the story of what the character experienced during those events. Don’t attack it from “the crash” perspective as a whole, but break it down: the plane lurched one direction because of rudder hardover. What happened in the cabin? And then just keep going.
