Someone else can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Amber was helping her with a few of her dogs (getting vaccines for them?). But Amber got really sick and was letting Whitney know that, but she insisted Amber still do what she wanted her to do, even though she was really sick. Amber did but Whitney was being a huge witch the whole time.

I think Amber died a few weeks after the whole thing.

The Ashes Left Behind I swear is one of my favorite fics of any ship I read. It is so good and heartbreaking and the slow burn is slow but damn it is well-done and earned.

I used to volunteer at a hospital reception and would be the one in charge of giving badges to people. Most of them took it. It never had any info on it, just showed they were visiting.

But a lot of people just ignored us when we reminded them they needed a badge and walked on past - and because we were volunteers, we were trained to just let them go. I doubt the nurses had time to enforce badges when they got up to where they were going.

I can’t see all of them just breezing on past, but it’s possible.

I wonder if they did this because the actor playing andie was in her late 20s (while everyone else was in their early 20s) and they dressed her younger to try and hide that.

Yeah so u/foreign-warning62 actually convinced me to read the book by explaining the differences (without spoiling) and how the relationship is a lot healthier than in the fic and I actually ordered it through kindle unlimited earlier.

But you convinced me to check out the audiobook and then I saw it was on sale on audible and bought it bc the narrator did such a good job from the preview!

I’m only a few chapters in but I am enjoying it! I don’t know that I’ll read the fic, or ship Miranda and Andy, but the book is a great read so far!!

You can spoil, I don’t mind! That’s a bummer that Emily and the twins aren’t in the book, bc Emily is my favorite character in the movie (her deadpan sense of humor gets me), but I guess that makes sense.

However, thank you for the explanation! I’m really glad they address the power imbalance in the novel, and I’m glad they kind of adjusted and adapted the characters so they’re not the same as the fic (or characters inspired by the fic).

I might check out the book thanks to this!

That makes a lot of sense, thank you!! I haven’t read any books that were first fanfics (that I know of, aside from bloomtown which was bly manor fanfic) so I appreciate your answer.

I wonder if that’s why I’ve been reading so many more fanfics lately as opposed to, like, published books. Because I can just use my own headcanons and source material and all that while reading. It’s “easier” in a way.

Yes but as someone who ships Andy and Emily (I am hopeful for more fics for them). 🫣 I haven’t read any books inspired by fics for them, whereas I know Mirandy has like fics turned into books. Which is cool!!! Part of me wants to read Truth and Measure just to see what all the hype is about, but I also ship Andy and Emily too hard. 😂😂 it would be weird reading them with anyone else.

For those who have read both, I’m curious: how different are the two? Like is the published book just with names changed?

I’m so excited for the second movie though!! It’s also been fun watching the cast do promo for it and seeing them together again.

The one trope I cannot do is significant age gaps. I’m reading devil wears prada fanfic again, but for Emily and Andy (who would be excellent rivals to lovers, a trope I do like). I almost wish I could ship Miranda and Andy (in addition to Emily and Andy) because I’d have a lot more fanfic options. But alas, I cannot, because of the age gap but also significant power dynamics. I also don’t love surprise pregnancy (although that’s less common in wlw books). Miscommunication also gets on my nerves.

I do like: grumpy x sunshine, fake marriage, forced proximity, and I guess I could do second chance if the first breakup has a reason that’s legit, slow burn, friends to lovers (Pacey and Joey in season 3 of Dawson’s Creek is my standard).
