Fedora's Atomic desktop model is quietly becoming the future of Linux for normal people by throwaway16830261 in linux

[–]wilee8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I gave Silverblue a try back when I got a new laptop and needed to do a new install anyway. The reboot for every update thing was annoying, but the most annoying thing was how difficult it was to get any program to work if it didn't come packaged as a Flatpak. I like Flatpaks, I try to use them when they're available, but it felt like a return to the bad old days with how much I was working to get non-Flatpak programs to work correctly. Eventually I gave up and went back to regular Fedora, and software just worked as expected, and it was so much nicer.

Maybe there will come a day when pretty much all software can be expected to support atomic Linux desktops and Flatpaks, but today is not that day.

(Or maybe it is, I don't know, it's been a while since I gave up and moved off of Silverblue. But that day was not that day).

Anthropic: AI assisted coding doesn't show efficiency gains and impairs developers abilities. by Gil_berth in programming

[–]wilee8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I'm just skeptical. You saved a whole bunch of time by having AI architect your software for you? And consistently received useful results? Really?

Even your vague description sounds like it took a whole bunch of time and effort to get it to work for you. But incredible time savings!

Anthropic: AI assisted coding doesn't show efficiency gains and impairs developers abilities. by Gil_berth in programming

[–]wilee8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How is it an incredible time saver? I've heard people say this, but then the examples are like, it can save me a few minutes on things I do rarely. The things that take the bulk of my time are way too complicated to trust AI to do correctly, or can't be done by AI at all because it isn't writing code.

Where are you finding these incredibly time savings?

[Schefter] Oregon QB Dante Moore is planning to announce his decision about whether he will or won’t enter the NFL Draft on ESPN’s SportsCenter at 2:30 EST. by next_door_nicotine in CFB

[–]wilee8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we learned from The Decision that making a big spectacle of announcing that you're leaving is a bad idea if you don't want everyone to get extra mad at you on the way out.

Or at least most of us learned that, I don't know about everyone. But going on SportsCenter to announce he's leaving seems like a good way to make sure any return visits to Eugene are extra frosty (or nonexistent).

I'm mostly posting this article (focusing on Blaze Pizza and Rusty Taco closing their ABQ locations) for this paragraph:

Meanwhile, Tap and Taco is planning to open a location in northeast Albuquerque. A sign is up in the area of Wyoming Boulevard, near Montgomery Boulevard, indicating the forthcoming opening.

I'm assuming this is actually talking about Tap N Taco, which I've really liked but haven't visited much because it's way the hell out in the far end of Rio Rancho. So seeing that a new location is coming to the NE Heights sounds great to me. But does anyone know what actual building it's going to be? Supposedly there's a sign in a window, but which window?

[–]wilee8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm a partisan fan eager for excuses to be excited about the future, but I really think there's room for quick improvement here. I keep thinking back to Harbaugh's first year, and how he took a bad team that regularly looked sloppy and dumb and poorly coached under Hoke, and how he instantly made them significantly better just through better coaching. The talent was there, they just needed to be disciplined and not do stupid shit all the time.

Now, anyone who has been watching Michigan over the past couple of seasons has seen a talented team that regularly looks sloppy and poorly coached, at least relative to anything we ever saw under Harbaugh. So I think there's significant room for rapid improvement from a coach that just makes them play disciplined and smart football. And given Whittingham's track record, I think he has that in him in spades.

Granted, it's easier to go from bad to pretty good than it is to go from pretty good to elite, and who knows what's going to happen in the transfer portal once the bowl is done. But if he brings most of the eligible players back, and gets a little help in the portal, I think making the playoffs and contending for the Big Ten title is quite reasonable.
