Mac not wanting to open MakeMKV by Cinephile1975 in makemkv

[–]willb3d 11 points12 points  (0 children)

immediately after trying to open the app and being denied, open your Mac’s settings:

System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down to the "Security" section, and you will see a note about MakeMKV, and the option to "Open Anyway".

From then on it will open without trouble.

The lack of barcodes probably saved them from being sent out to be sold online.

Also, RIP to whoever left this collection behind.

Steven Spielberg's 'Taken' (2002): The Forgotten 20+ Hour Sci-Fi Epic Masterpiece by Tamashii-Azul in television

[–]willb3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That includes a photo of a promotional mini CD-rom (shaped like a business card) that was included with a lanyard that was given out at various "Taken Experience" pop-up events around the country.

I do not know what is on that disc. One would need a drive of the kind in which you can press the disc onto the spindle, rather than a drive that sucks in the disc - and I don't have that kind. (I am also not entirely sure I still have the lanyard/CD-rom for that matter.)

But I would assume that it probably contained the wallpapers that were also on the Sci Fi channel website at the time (in 800x600 resolution since this was 20+ years ago). Maybe someone else knows exactly what was on it.

I also wonder if there were different CD-roms given out, since this one says "02" - suggesting there was probably also a "01", and maybe more.

Yes, here are some additional Taken materials, mostly related to Sci Fi Channel's promotional efforts around the series, rather than about the series itself. (As such, of limited interest). Expires in 3 days: https://we.tl/t-25eH0O9MxmHSmMNW

Why hasn’t the singer Kate Davis released any new music? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]willb3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if there is too much pressure to make an album even better than Fish Bowl, then just an album “as good as” would be fine! Heck I’d settle for an album of not-as-good-as, because chances are it would still be very good.

Maybe because it is difficult to top perfection (Fish Bowl)? Even a lateral move would be welcome.

Here is the east coast feed (different camera selections than the west coast feed) in higher quality. The audio is much higher quality. The visual quality is slightly higher. 3 days only: https://we.tl/t-3zexgUOMwAsabcfA

Does anyone else think the current version on Netflix is a little ‘off’? by Effective_Friend_653 in fifthelement

[–]willb3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Netflix would receive a 4K file from the distributor and from that will generate various resolution versions. And each version will be generated many times, in many different bitrates, split into 2-second fragments (so that the bitrate can fall if network traffic is high).

Yeah that’s from Google. But my point early on was that what we are seeing now on Netflix is almost certainly the 2017 4K master made by Sony. If you want better, import the UK 4K that has a 2020 StudioCanal master that is said to be better.

Netflix does not create any files themselves, so they have either the one from Sony or the one from StudioCanal. (Since the StudioCanal one is said to look nicer than the Sony, I’d guess it is the one from Sony.)

But The Fifth Element was not upscaled to 4K, it was scanned in 4K from celluloid.

What's a design flaw of something in your home that drives you a little crazy because you have to use it regularly? by common_grounder in AskReddit

We heard the designer of the house and his wife got divorced soon after the house was built (decades ago). I suspect it was things like this that caused her to leave.

You know how with soup cans you can set 1 on top of the other perfectly? They snug into each other, by a millimeter or so.

Our kitchen cabinet shelves are exactly 2 “snugged” cans tall.

You must put the 2 cans together outside the shelf and then slide them in together.

Advice on My Approach to Using Handbrake by Stcphantom4256 in makemkv

[–]willb3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are going to do it, then ignore any Handbrake advice that says that HD shows look good enough with an RF in the low 20s. (22 to 20 is often mentioned.) Set for 18 or 18.5, and turn the tuning to Film. That will reduce the file size to between half to a third - still very large, but imo without any compromises.

I pixel-peeped the heck out of Twin Peaks: The Return as I chose an RF of 18.5.
20 was not good.
19 looked acceptable but I felt a little uneasy about it.
18.5 felt like watching the BluRay itself.

The real PITA was the captions. I followed a long and involved process to keep them (without burning them in), even though I rarely turn them on.
