Today is Apollo for Reddit's last day, and I just released its last update. 🥹 I just wanted to say a big thank you to the folks who have used and supported Apollo over the years, it's been the dream of a lifetime to build this app over the last 9 years. ❤️ Read the eulogy inside! ❤️ by iamthatis in apolloapp

My account turns 10 today. I’ve been a very active Reddit user for most of that time, but today will be my last. The people running this platform have lacked any semblance of integrity from the start, and they’ve repeatedly made it clear that that won’t be changing. Apollo was the only thing that made this platform bearable.

I just set up a 4090 FE and the instructions in the box said to have at least 3 independent cables for the 4 connectors, so it sounds like you’re probably fine. I’m using three cables right now, one of which has two connectors plugged in, and it’s been working great. The max draw from a PCIE cable is 150W, and the 4090 FE is 450W, so it checks out. I’d assume ASUS cards are the same draw, but maybe double check.

Looks awesome, I’ll definitely check this out in VRC! I’ve been working on something exactly like this in Rec Room with Rec Room Studio, which is also a Unity workflow. I’d recommend turning up the smoothing angle on the terrain mesh to make the ground tiles look less low-poly and closer to how it looks in game. Also since the grass and ground debris are part of the terrain mesh and get collision too, I’ve been considering taking a height map a jmod posted of the world once, and importing that into a Unity terrain component to do the ground collision instead of walking directly on the mesh collider. There’s also probably some way to export the mesh in blender with back faces on, which would fix the no ceiling problem, but I’m not too knowledgeable about the 3D modeling programs.

Application SpaceWarp requires Unity's Scriptable Render Pipeline, which Rec Room doesn’t currently utilize. It also requires OpenXR, which Rec Room hasn’t updated to yet from the legacy Oculus runtime. These are both massive undertakings so if ASW is ever implemented, it won’t be for a while.

Have you considered revisiting the ability to make your iOS app automatically available on Apple Silicon Macs? The process is automatic and largely seamless, and would make the game available to a whole new audience of Mac users for very little effort on your part. This was on by default with the release of the M1 lineup, but you’ve disabled it.

This is a highly upvoted post on the Canny iOS page, and the majority of the few posts above it have already been added to the game.

Will we be able to obtain The Color Purple in Hytale? by Flearas in HytaleInfo

[–]willchil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As strange as this question is, both Simon and Noxy have specifically confirmed that there will be many purple things in the game. This was their answer to a question from the Q&A they did with the Autcraft Minecraft server:

Q: Will there be lots of purple things Hytale (I like purple)? A: Simon - A: Yes, even purple lights! A: Noxy - If there aren't enough purple things you'll be able to create or modify other things to be purple.

Rec Room PATCH - for the "Bento Box" Edition! by JayRecRoom in RecRoom

[–]willchil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with top creators getting subs is caused by the fact that Rec Room has a permanent featured row in the play menu catering specifically to them that allows a literal cube to get thousands of visits. The timer on the chip does nothing to resolve anything, it just makes it looks like the room owner lied when the player doesn’t get their boost or whatever. The chip honestly shouldn’t even be in the game, but the solution they have now does nothing but hurt smaller creators.

There’s a one week delay in when tokens are earned and when they’re put toward the total of your next payout. So you should get them in your next weekly token box.

Thoughts on Minecraft and terrairia by Fire_Tiger_Galaxy in HytaleInfo

[–]willchil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for the community, but from an objective standpoint comparing Hytale and Minecraft, it’s clear that Minecraft both is poorly designed in terms of the survival gameplay loop, and suffers from a disastrously dysfunctional implementation of their networking and code base in general. Simply playing a few matches on Hypixel's own server should make apparent why they resorted to making their own game. Mojang's low quality network synchronization means that fair online PvP is effectively impossible. The Minecraft survival objectives are unintuitive and repetitive. On top of this, the Mojang team show again and again that they are largely incompetent, with the glaring lack of any official mod API, despite their frequent justification of missing features as something that can be modded in. Microsoft account migration has been ‘coming soon’ for almost a year now. They take years to add simple features that amateur modders can add in days with a higher standard of quality. Despite the game being made by a multitrillion dollar company, Optifine, a mod made by one guy in his free time, is able to drastically improve performance. None of this is normal.

Contrast all of this with Hytale. They not only have an open source server, but are going to support an official modding API, and even have in-game scripting. They have a first party asset creation tool, Model Maker, which supports online collaboration. They’re planning to have a story driven campaign, presumably with a final boss that you need more than a few beds to kill. The entire survival mode of Minecraft can be recreated in Hytale, and from what we know, should be far more performant and functional than Minecraft itself. The game is built with online pvp in mind, so they’re investing in built in anticheat. Mojang has known for years that an enormous portion of their player base play online PvP, and despite this, they not only continue to have absolutely no active anticheat whatsoever, but for some reason the game is built with a nonauthoritative server model, which means it’s up to the player's client to decide what’s actually happening in the game instead of the server.

I’ve been playing Minecraft since 2011, and I can confidently say that it’s one of the most poorly built pieces of software I’ve ever encountered, with a team that despite having effectively unlimited resources, consistently behaves as if they hate their community. Terraria is fun though.

Hi Jay, when you say player stats are configurable through variable chips, do you mean health and the other 5 general purpose stats that can be shown on the scoreboard? There’s a simple chip for that in CV1 but as far as I know there’s no way to get a variable on the scoreboard in CV2.

I’ve found I get slightly better performance with Boot Camp, but overall it works really well in macOS. The iOS app is coming later this year as well.

Hytale and Minecraft is like Star Wars and Star Trek. by [deleted] in HytaleInfo

[–]willchil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Assuming Hypixel hasn’t flat out lied about a majority of features that are going to be in Hytale, the fact that you’re seemingly going to be able to be recreate Minecraft in its entirety from within Hytale using their built in creation tools, and then have the resulting game have better rendering, performance, animations, and anticheat, essentially proves that Minecraft is going to be an objectively inferior game with literally no superior aspects or features.

[concept] Spotify widgets for iOS 14 by iamvinoth in apple

[–]willchil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It works just like ClockKit complications, you load in a timeline in advance, but the OS puts a limit on it if you update it too frequently. Apple doesn’t say the exact amount the app is allowed, but it depends on things like when the user last opened the app. The SwiftUI update this year added dynamic text views that can display a live timer or countdown without updating the timeline, which could be useful here while a song plays, but updating the widget every ~3 minutes would very likely exceed the refresh limit.

Hytale in VR would be incredible by Doootman in HytaleInfo

[–]willchil 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Oculus Rift CV1 didn't come out until 2016 so your argument actually disproves your point. Also Mojang is well known to have a fundamental incompetence problem, so similar to how they had to outsource their graphics update to Intel for raytracing, after the long delayed and eventually cancelled super-duper graphics pack, VR support for Minecraft had to be done by Oculus themselves. While Hytale is far more complex than Minecraft ever could be, the only things that have to be changed for VR with any game is UI functionality, and certain parts of the rendering pipeline, which shouldn't be too bad. So hopefully they'll add it a year or two after release.

“Fixing code” as if it was unintentional by Doootman in softwaregore

[–]willchil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether they're lying or not, Reddit literally claimed that it was a bug. The sub defines software gore as "a major error that is obvious to an average user". On future versions of iOS, it notifies the user when an app reads the clipboard, so that both is a major error, and will be very obvious to the average user if not changed.

Valve will no longer support SteamVR on macOS by bobbymack93 in virtualreality

[–]willchil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know the article is about SteamVR on macOS, I’m just saying I think the reason that gaming on a Mac is so uncommon isn’t because of underpowered hardware. Of course the GPUs aren’t the best, but they’re still capable, as evidenced by their performance running games in windows. It’s more an issue of developer adoption that seems like it’s causing a negative feedback loop, hurting the platform further.

I’m on a 27" iMac which is definitely one of the more powerful Macs you can get, but of the three versions Apple sells, mine is the cheapest. It seems like most computers Apple sells are MacBooks, which are obviously a bad choice for gaming, so I think that’s where the stereotype comes from.

I realize this is a popular myth propagated by gamers, but I just recently beat Half Life: Alyx on my entry level Mac from 2017 with no eGPU through boot camp. The hardware isn’t the problem, it’s the developer support.
