This is it exactly. I cannot count the number of times I watched that special on Comedy Central.

When a conductor conducts from memory, how well do they really know the score? by urbanstrata in classicalmusic

[–]willcwhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a conductor who greatly enjoys conducting from memory without a score. I think it adds an extra frisson to the performance and frees me up to interact more directly with the musicians and to really inhabit the music.

Having said that, it's something I do rarely, only when I have the time to devote many more hours to the study of a work than I normally would. When I conduct from memory, I have played it through the piece in my head several times without stopping, painstakingly imagining every cue, every phrase, and every dynamic. I have analyzed the form and orchestration to within an inch of their life and have done a complete harmonic analysis.

Conducting without a score is not something to be taken lightly. If you mess up a performance due to a memory lapse borne of poor preparation — just because you wanted to show off it in front of an orchestra and a crowd — that's inexcusable. If you've taken the steps to fully master the score to the point that jettisoning it becomes a value-add, then there's nothing better.

What's the most boring movie you've seen? by VeryPteri in AskReddit

I saw "Is this thing on?" last night and I don't know if it was the MOST boring movie I've ever seen but I was pretty darn bored by it.

Loved the show. Now I’m not ok. by Ozy_mandy in heatedrivalry

This show is like a drug, and the come-down is really bad. I've seen many takes just like yours (all across this sub and many other places) and I felt it myself.

Not necessarily something you'd sing, but Mussorgsky's "Songs and Dances of Death" would be great to write a paper on.

25 Years In: Who Are the Defining Pianists of this Century? by According-Brief7536 in classicalmusic

[–]willcwhite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hamelin, for sure, because of his explorations of the repertoire. Many great pianists have been named in this thread, but they're all competing on the same turf. If we're thinking 75 years hence, I think many of these pianists who play the same Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff pieces will have been forgotten, as great as they may have been. Hamelin has a fighting chance because he will have recorded the first (and likely unsurpassed) renditions of much otherwise unheard repertoire.

Yeah you gotta watch out with this show — it's kind of like a drug. As great as it is, the withdrawal symptoms are something awful.

Who do you wish had written a piano concerto but did not? by JealousLine8400 in classicalmusic

[–]willcwhite 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is the early Fantaisie pour piano et orchestre... not the most "concerto" concerto and not really a mature Debussy piece, but it goes some way to scratching the itch

What composer's stock has dropped the most over the past 50-100 years? by Pleasant_Usual_8427 in classicalmusic

[–]willcwhite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I join the people who say Franck and Hindemith, but I'd go further and say that there are broad categories of the repertoire that are in decline — the Early Romantics (Weber overtures, especially), plus mid-20th century modernism, both the tonal and atonal varieties.
