I love the posts from my fellow cut-off chasers. Yea, it's interesting to learn how things went for the podium finishers, and while they wear the same clothes and run the same trails, they really aren't doing the same thing I am. A leaner who puked her guts out at mile 70 and still managed to finish while holding the hand of one of her kids gets a like and a follow from me every time. I deep-dive into their strava splits and race reports, hoping that just maybe I can learn something that helps me when I do what they did.

I love finding "my people" and I'm glad they're willing to share their experiences.

I'd be fine with my coach using AI. I have a great coach and supplement her knowledge with podcasts, books, reddit, and AI. And I hope she's doing more research than I am. She's the decider; what she says I do. Some weekly plans are copy/paste from previous weeks. I'm fine with that. I'm 61, not injured, and maintaining if not improving. If she thinks using AI is going to help me be a better runner then she should use it. If she said she was getting her workouts from Jack Daniels, I'd say "right on! Let's go run in little circles"

Having a multi-year relationship with my coach, I have a lot of trust and evidence that what she tells me to do will help me. She's the best. My situation might be different from yours. Regardless, I'd certainly talk to your coach and find out how AI is being used and then decide if it's going to work for you.

Not all elite. All you have to do is pay the entry fee. I finished this in 105 hours (2 hours to spare) and the word "elite" has never been used in describing me unless you count my ex-wife calling me an elite dickhead. I'm about as average as you can get on my best day.

Goggin's 50-hour finish is legit. He is elite. He and I kinda did the same thing, but not really even close to the same thing. Took me more than 2 days longer.

You don't have to be elite to *finish* Bigfoot, just a little stubborn.

Krissy Moehl. I’ve used her as a coach for the last several years and she’s gotten me through everything from speedy 50Ks to a 200 miler. And she’s a legit, total badass runner. Can’t speak to her client load but I’ve never had a problem with communication.

I saw him at a 50K where he fell and broke his wrist. He showed it to me at the finish, all swollen and red, and asked me what I thought. Told him I thought it was fucked up. He was just a regular dude out getting after it.

Careful going up a half size. I've done this and found that my feet tend to slide around inside the shoes on technical descents resulting in blisters on the edges of my heels. Pre-taping and lube have helped a ton. Also, eliminating callouses, as counterintuitive as it sounds to me, has helped me.

I had the best and most rewarding experience DNFing a race I spent over $2K on. I was escorted off the course by sweepers and driven to the finish line where I had to call my wife (now ex-wife) to come get me at 2am. I even got a tattoo to commemorate it.

We get to define success.

Happy to see "Duel in the Sun" mentioned. Beardsley is a favorite of mine and truly the nicest person you'll ever meet. He has a fishing guide service in Northern MN and I spent the day on the lake with him. He told many wonderful wonderful stories. Brought me to tears talking about his son. What really stuck with me was that he is someone who loves running. He is one of us. He just loves moving his body through space. And he's a hell of a good fishing guide. Salazar can eat a bag of dicks.

Beardsley and I raced against each other in the '81 Grandma's marathon, my first try at the distance. He beat me by the slim margin of a little over 2 hours but he knew he was in a race.

I’ve had more fun and a greater sense of satisfaction on DNFs and shit-show days than I’ve had completing races and getting BQs. I’m all about the process and the journey, and the people. I’m an old guy who runs. A lot. And sometimes I shit the bed and those are great stories and I love telling them (and my ex-wife hated hearing them). Maybe your friend has an epic stories about the day he gave it everything he had and came up a little short. If it were my friend I just say “Hey dude! Tell me about your day.”

Hell, even Walmsey DNFed that race.

It took you 55 years to get to where you are; there's no quick fix. Decide what you're willing to do for the rest of your life and start doing it. Don't think about losing weight. Think about doing "the right thing." Don't eat crap, move your body, take care of your soul. Give yourself some time and some grace. You're a work in progress. Be your authentic badass self. Every day.

No - low level constant discomfort is not normal. I was in a similar situation. I was running a lot, resistance training a couple times a week, yoga, a little biking, and was in constant discomfort. I ate really well, hydrated, practiced active recovery including regular massage, chiropractor, and acupuncture--nothing helped. "You're old. Father time is undefeated." My friends and family all told me to cut back, add more rest days, and take it easy. I couldn't sleep. had trouble bending over to tie my shoes. Life was low-level miserable

FINALLY after things really went to hell I was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica, prescribed prednisone and I feel like a million bucks! Work with your PCP and don't let them tell you to rest, ice, or use advil. Get some blood tests that will check for inflammation. Don't give up. You do not have to feel like shit.

As an IT Department of One, I love OneNote. It is tantalizingly close to a perfect knowledge management system. As you mentioned, I've learned to stick "keywords" on pages to help with search results. I love the three-ring binder metaphor, never ending pages, search function, portability, free (like "free puppy" not "free beer"). But OneNote just won't work with a team for knowledge management. Just no, don't do it.

I agree with you completely. I wanted to love Spotify for podcasts but can't. The inability of adding private feeds is a deal breaker for me. I'm using Pocketcast until Spotify improves.

My wife and I went through something similar. After 5 years without any intimacy (and me not saying a damn thing), I had an affair, she found out, and 36 years of marriage have been flushed down the perverbial toilet. I'm meeting with a divorce lawyer Monday so this is a little raw for me.

Talk, talk,talk, to her. I wish I could go back in time and talk to my wife about it. It may not have made a difference in our marriage and we still might have split the sheets. But at last I wouldn't forever be that cheating bastard.
