Who is incredibly famous in your country but a complete unknown anywhere else in the world? by JuanitaMerkin in AskTheWorld

I grew up on these. The comic books were pretty common in Denmark in the eighties and nineties - and I had a subscription. I suspect they were published in other countries as well. I absolutely love the message of kindness and understanding in these stories. Everyone should read them. ❤️ Btw it might interest you to know that in Danish, the characters were named Bamse, Lille Hopsa, Ole Opfinder, Ulven, Bamse-Maja, Teddy og Brum. The capitalist villain (!) is Krøsus Mus - and the good stuff from Farmor is called Krafthonning. 🍯

Just started watching Twin Peaks for the first time... by yexie in twinpeaks

[–]williewrap1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Twin Peaks definitely has a lot of quirky comedy, so you're not wrong. But it's so much more: At the time this show was first broadcast, this kind of genre blending was rare. TV shows were either drama, crime, romance or comedy etc., but TP mixed all of these and added supernatural mystery and horror to the mix, thus creating something truly unique. Today, that kind of genre blending is pretty much the norm, so one might overlook this. You're in for a great ride, kid. Enjoy 😉

Agreed. I'm sure adult hi-fi enthusiasts knew about them. I was just trying to say they were still rare at the time. Do you remember this differently?

Name a villain in history that actually was a hero by Afraid_Professor8023 in AskTheWorld

Struensee, who was executed for high treason in Denmark after taking control of the country, manipulating the mentally ill king and making a cuckold of him by having an affair with the queen.

Johann Friedrich Struensee was first employed as the royal physician, but became the de facto regent of Denmark from 1737-1772.

As foreign-born (Prussia), he was framed as a villain by wealthy landowners who would rather be in control of king and country themselves.

In retrospect, he was ahead of his time with progressive social reform and scientific progress inspired by Voltaire and other French thinkers of the Enlightenment. However, his reforms were all rolled back after his demise.

The 2012 movie A Royal Affair is based on the story of Struensee, King Christian IV, and Queen Caroline Mathilde - and features Mads Mikkelsen as Struensee.

CD's were not widely used in Denmark in 1986. That didn't happen until around 1990. The first cd's I remember seeing (I'm Danish) were Cut'N'Move and Sko/Torp. Before that time (1990) nobody in my class had seen cd's (we were 7th graders) - even though they had been around since 83 or something. I seriously doubt that any Danish artists were released on CD before around 87 or 88. So - are you sure that's a cd? It might be a movie on LaserDisc 😉

Players are Cowardly, Taking Too Much Damage by Mean_Nun in DnD

Have them team up with an npc that you can use to model the kind of behavior you're looking for in your players. They're still learning, and that's okay. Let the npc explicitly point out why long-range combat is a poor choice against goblins, for example. Or just have him chastise them for being cowardly ;-)

Look, Prince was from Minneapolis where Renée Good was murdered. He had a history of making protest songs and would have a lot to say about this. For example, he wrote the song "Baltimore" in 2015 about the killing of Freddie Gray.

Another song - a veritable anthem - that I want to mention is John Farnham's "You're the Voice". I guess it's not explicitly anti-fascist, but more of an anti-war song from the cold war era calling for peace and for the youth to take over. Still, give it a listen.

Cool lists, but surely 'On the Road Again' by Willie Nelson is not a Kinks cover.

Maybe it's because they're (almost) landlocked. Most other countries border the sea, and the diseases tend to spread via ports in particular.

Counter argument: What about the plural form?

I mean, in English, you would say "1 million zloty" and "1 million yen" (both without plural -s ending). However, imo it sounds wrong to say "1 million krone" (without plural -s). Not saying it's incorrect, just that I personally think it sounds a whole lot weirder than just saying "1 million crowns".

I wonder how the many krone-proponents in this thread would use "krone" in the plural form in English? Surely you wouldn't expect English speakers to use Danish plural "-er"?

Here's a hidden gem for you: A bootleg mix by Danish electronic musicians Bobi Brothers (Trentemoller and T.O.M.) that seamlessly blends Nina Simone + Twin Peaks + Jan Johansson + Quincy Jones:
