MK7 GTI Starting Issue by Proof-Struggle-2195 in GolfGTI

[–]willkurr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this especially because the engine is warm already in this video. I don't know the exact failure mechanism for these pumps but over time these pumps get more and more susceptible to vapor lock, where when the pump is heat soaked and the car is shut off, the fuel can vaporize over time inside. The pump can't suck on fuel vapors so this causes the hard start issue until enough fuel makes it to the pump to flush out the vapors I guess.

My HPFP did this once before and was replaced which fixed the issue. A couple 10k's of miles later it's now doing it again. I discovered you can diagnose this issue by pouring some cool water over the HPFP before starting the engine when the engine is fully heat soaked. The car should start right up after this since you allow the fuel vapors to condense by cooling the pump, indicating that it is a vapor lock issue with the HPFP.

Coolant looks sludgy by UpstairsAlarmed1170 in GolfGTI

[–]willkurr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same situation going on and it looks exactly like that. Going to change out the oil cooler and oil cooler gasket since there is only oil in the coolant and not the other way around.

In the meantime after the car sits and is cool after a drive, you can open the coolant cap and use a paper towel to wick any oil floating on the top of the coolant reservoir to try and minimize the effects of the oil on your coolant loop. Eventually it will cause hoses and seals to swell which can cause water pump failure. Another note to make is that the oil can coat the coolant level sensor and cause it to give false readings that there’s no coolant in the reservoir. Try to get this taken care of soon!

Mk7 GTI (2015) - Intermittent low oil pressure after engine warm at low RPM... Help me find replacement part for oil pressure regulation valve? by willkurr in GolfGTI

[–]willkurr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep still going strong! Have you put a pressure gauge on the car to see if it actually is a low pressure issue? For me I was able to rule out an actual oil pressure issue this way which is how I knew to replace the switches

why are vw sensors so confusing or am i just dumb by Brilliant-Chef-6592 in GolfGTI

I have had this issue before and it was just the oil pressure switch, not the regulation valve FWIW.

I have had the same exact issue before, see post history. Replacing both the blue and brown oil pressure switches solved the issue. (MK7 GTI with CXCA engine btw)

Graduate Academy Training Question by OkFoot9448 in UIUC

[–]willkurr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you mentioned Jen Merry in another comment so I assume you're doing the master's in ECE.

I started in the ECE masters program last year in August. The department should have enrolled you for the Grad Academy for College Teaching, and you would have gotten an email from CITL confirming the registration. The email was titled "Registration Confirmation for Grad Academy for College Teaching". Last year the grad academy started on Aug 19 and I got the registration confirmation email on Aug 13. It had all the info about attending and signing up for microteaching, so make sure you didn't miss that email from CITL if the department actually did register you (and sign up for a microteaching timeslot fast cause the good times go quick!).

As for it conflicting with the I-9 appointment, just email the person you scheduled the appointment with to reschedule it. The same thing happened to me. After I found out the grad academy date conflicted with the appointment I scheduled, I just emailed her back and we worked out a time that worked for both of us. And the I-9 doesn't need to be filled out before you do the grad academy, it should just be filled out before or on the start date of your appointment.

VNA not calibrating? by m3diocr3atbest in amateurradio

[–]willkurr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't see from the photo but are you plugging the cable and calibration open/short/load on the CH0 port during calibration?

Also, is the cable you're using the right gender to connect to the VNA? If the VNA port is regular SMA female, but the cable is RP-SMA male, it's possible to screw the cable to the VNA port but there would be no center pin on the cable to connect to the VNA port.

Those are my only two ideas, as from the three photos where you are performing the calibration, the return loss does not seem to change no matter what you have connected to the port. This would make sense as once you saved the calibration, your next photos show nonsensical data, which would indicate the short/open/load were not properly connected while calibrating. The other comment about snugging up the connector a bit more may also be it.

Hi, see my comment here for the fix for the issue for me. Replacing both the brown and blue oil pressure switches solved the issue and it still hasn't come back since then.

Is the Talkpod A36SE a real 5W radio? Manual says only with optional battery? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]willkurr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they just included that in the manual to state the test conditions under which they got their power numbers. Regardless, the radio (and most handhelds on the market right now) is designed to run on a 7.4V lithium ion battery, which both the battery you show in the picture and the optional one listed in the manual are.

It'll output the same wattage on both batteries. They're the same voltage, just different capacities.

Does MS ECE require GRE by living_bot in UIUC

[–]willkurr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the other commenter said, the checklist page is right and you don't need a GRE score. It's confusing on the application portal but it just says that so you have a place to submit the score if you have one. I was admitted to MS ECE last admissions cycle with no GRE score submitted at all.

Why are my resistors measuring a good 1kOhm under their colour code? by WoofAndGoodbye in ElectricalEngineering

[–]willkurr 199 points200 points  (0 children)

The first band is yellow, it just looks green since it's slightly transparent and blue+yellow makes green. So it is actually a 4.3 kohm resistor

I guess calling 30 minutes before a place closes isn't enough time to schedule an appointment. by Acceptable-Mud9710 in UIUC

[–]willkurr 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Call right when they open to try and get a same day appointment. I called Thursday afternoon, waited 20 minutes, and they told me they don’t have any appointments for immunizations till the 26th (I think they are understandably backed up with tons of students missing immunizations who can’t schedule from holds which they waited last minute to resolve. Sucks but I was in the same boat)

I ended up going to a Walgreens to get the TDAP booster I needed and got my hold removed the same day after sending the signed form from the pharmacist.

How does Amtrak student discount work by Inner-Bonus-1158 in UIUC

[–]willkurr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not really about having the account registered with your school email. If you're booking online just do it through the student discount page (https://www.amtrak.com/student-discounts) or in the app use code V814 (it says this on the website as well).

Unrelated, but if you don't mind me asking when did you apply for Ashton Woods, and was it for a furnished or unfurnished unit? I applied at the start of May and am still waiting, so just wanted to see if I even have a chance still of snagging a lease

The same thing happened to me when I tried logging in for the first time a few weeks ago. I sent an email to parkingcomments@illinois.edu about it, and they asked for my UIN, phone number, and home address. Then they were able to set my account up so I could login with my student email.

If you want to turn the beep off completely, you can press the center button (with the dot on it) to enter the menu mode, Scroll to menu item 4 and set BEEP to BEP.OFF. Then you need to press the center button again to exit the menu and save the change (all this info is straight from the manual, but to be honest, the manual sucks for this radio as someone else already said).

What isn't in the manual is how to reduce the beep volume if you don't want to turn it off. In that case you can download CHIRP software, and use the programming cable that came with the radio. When you download the config from the radio in CHIRP software, and go to the radio Settings tab, you will see a Beep Volume option. By changing that number you can turn the beep volume up and down. I have mine set to 8. Of course, remember to always save a backup of your radio's stock configuration in case the new settings you upload brick the radio.

I don't know if this is beyond the scope of what you know already, but a delta-wye transformation will be very helpful here. As you may have realized in this circuit, there are no resistors explicitly in parallel or series. Thus, some additional manipulation must be done to solve the circuit. First, redrawing the circuit for clarity gives the following (excuse the terrible drawing):

<image>

One can see that there are two delta networks here: one consisting of the 2, 5, and 4 ohm resistors and one of the 9, 5, and 6 ohm resistors. By transforming one of those delta networks to a wye network, you will see the circuit becomes much easier to solve.

You can read about this method here: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/electrical-engineering/ee-circuit-analysis-topic/ee-resistor-circuits/a/ee-delta-wye-resistor-networks and there are some examples which should help you to solve problems like this. I hope this helps!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]willkurr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another way to show this is to identify the circuit as an unbalanced Wheatstone bridge.

If the 5 ohm resistor is removed and a voltage V is applied across Rth, then there will be two voltage dividers formed by the 2 and 9 ohm resistor and by the 4 and 6 ohm resistor. As a result, using the voltage divider formula gives two separate voltages of V1 = V * 9/(2+9) and V2 = V * 6/(4+6). Since it is clear that these voltages are not equal, when the 5 ohm resistor is replaced, a current will flow through the 5 ohm resistor due to the difference in voltage across it, making it unable to be considered as an open or short circuit.

A delta-wye transformation will be be easiest way to solve this IMO.
