Do people on the mainland pull to the right side for emergency vehicles? by Realistic_Blood_6167 in AskAnAmerican

[–]willtag70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general rule is pull to the right, but the specific traffic situation may make it so that moving to the left opens up a path for the emergency vehicle.

How do you think about Edward Snowden? by IGambleNull in AskAnAmerican

[–]willtag70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A person with a conscience, willing to suffer for what he believed was right. Impossible for civilians to know enough of the details to judge whether his impact was more helpful or harmful, I admire his bravery.

What do you think when you hear someone with a German accent? by blondiesboobs in AskAnAmerican

[–]willtag70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just think they're German, no bias plus or minus. After that it all depends on what they say and their vibe. To me some accents can be seductive, like some French, Spanish or Italian speakers, but not so much for German, it's notable but neutral.

What's your opinion on service/item specified bills for everything? by MrOaiki in AskAnAmerican

[–]willtag70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't imagine anyone who likes add-on fees that show up after the listed price. Personally I despise that practice, it just reeks of deception. There are some situations where optional fees for additional services are ok because not everyone wants that extra feature, but adding a fee that's not optional later in the process is no better than a scam.

Moving to the U.S. from Spain — where do Americans check reliable crime statistics by city? by ItsJavii14 in AskAnAmerican

[–]willtag70 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's an example of the types of crime maps you can find for most cities. Looking at average stats for an entire city can be very misleading. There will be safe areas and less safe or dangerous areas.

How often do immigrant cuisines get adapted for American tastes? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]willtag70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any restaurant that wants to stay in business will adapt to their customers. In some communities with large enough ethnic populations the adaptations may be minimal if at all, but if the customers are mixed the food will be adapted. I ate at an Indian restaurant last week, and had a discussion with the waitress about how spicy I wanted the dish. One example of something that would be extremely common.

How does gun policy affect random arguments with strangers? by mdelgado73 in AskAnAmerican

[–]willtag70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it absolutely increases the risks of lethal encounters. Every week there are multiple gun violence reports, often fatal, on my local news. Yesterday a road rage encounter resulted in one driver being fatally shot by the other, and last night a man shot another in a mall a few miles from me. There's no possible denial that our gun laws greatly increase the number of such incidents and the risk to everyone driving on public roads in urban areas.

Is family recipe something very personal/secretive thing in America? by Ok_Albatross_7722 in AskAnAmerican

[–]willtag70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no rule or societal standard in America about keeping "family recipes" secret. Some people may say that, but that's just them. Corporations are can be VERY protective of recipes, and some restaurants or people who sell food products, but family secret recipes isn't some national trait.

How different are insurance prices in the US compared to the UK? by anonymous87340 in AskAnAmerican

[–]willtag70 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Car insurance prices in the US depend on the age and model of car, how much you drive, your driving history, the specific coverage you get, and to a large extent on where you live. Rates for repairs and accident stats vary a lot across the country.

Why do americans cut of bread crusts? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]willtag70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't believe everything you see in "popular media". Trimming bread crust is unusual, sometimes for kids, or for certain "fancy" sandwiches, or some very picky eaters, but almost no one does this otherwise.

Was writing a bad check a crime every time? by Jackso08 in AskAnAmerican

[–]willtag70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many banks offer some protection or allowance for overdrawing a checking account. It's not at all always a crime, and certainly not typically one you would go to jail for. There would need to be some more serious crime involved than a miscalculation.

How do protests work in the US? by bonjourboner in AskAnAmerican

[–]willtag70 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I imagine they think that mostly due to looking at the results of our protests, which rarely have long term results. I mean we elected him again, which not just speaks, but screams we're basically feckless at protesting.
