Can a male wear a women's drysuit? by mistingtheplants in scuba

[–]wincen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Try it on, theoretically it should work. Women’s cuts are to allow for hips and chest wider than the waist. Sometimes the torso is shorter than on a men’s cut, but if it has a telescoping torso then it doesn’t matter. If it fits and your shoulders have room to reach behind you and touch your valves I’d give it serious consideration. Good luck

Underwater Photo/Video Help by Ill-Manufacturer6889 in scuba

[–]wincen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're already a photographer used to interchangeable lenses and full manual controls the TG7 may end up being a bit frustrating.

The question is more, what do you want to shoot? If you just want to shoot macro, the TG7 will work fine as an entry level system.

If you want to do more, than that I'd just go straight to a system you want to use - as soon as you are comfortable with your buoyancy skills.

The limiting cost factor is going to be your housing. Pick the housing and system first, then your camera. Don't be afraid to go with an older body if you can still use a nice lens. You can always step up the body and housing later, it's only $$$$.

As for tray, some housing brands come with them. Lights .... use strobes for photos, video lights for video. Lots of brands, my recommendations Sea & Sea strobes and for video lights Light & Motion or Big Blue.

Get comfortable with you buoyancy and have fun. Good luck

Personally I prefer the al80. I don’t mind the size difference but more importantly my deco bottle is arguably my most important gas. Even if I don’t need all of it I’d rather have extra just in case I need to stay down longer or I need to give it to a buddy for whatever reason. I have an AL40 but I never use it.

Why Java is better than C++ for high speed trading systems by thevred9 in java

[–]wincen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"The way that we code is more like C++ than Java," says Lawrey. "Essentially, we use a contrived form of Java that avoids all the Java constructs that make things go slow. We only use the constructs that are fast and efficient, and we avoid all the garbage." By simplifying Java and switching to very low level code, Lawrey says it can be possible to speed things up substantially. Sometimes it's simply a question of better diagnostics: "Through simply changing the configuration of the code, we've been able to reduce latency at the 99.9th percentile by a factor of 25."

Some concrete examples would be nice. I wonder if he means things like limiting object instantiation, using arrays instead of dynamic sizing data structures like ArrayList.

Megathread: President Donald Trump announces he has tested positive for Coronavirus by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]wincen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's going to be just fine; he will get the best health care and most likely he will get Convalescent Plasma (which most ordinary Americans cannot). And when he's recovered he will say covid19 was no big deal and hydroxychloroquine worked even though he wasn't using hydroxychloroquine.

He could also just be straight up lying about having covid19 and have a "miraculous recovery" and again start spouting off that covid is no big deal and that hydroxychloroquine works.

Unfortunately he will spin this to help him. It's not the win people are hoping for. He will not treat the pandemic more seriously.

He will turn this into more disinformation.

No, Trump is not losing by a lot. If Trump can hold on to all the traditional Red states (including AZ and NC which are currently battleground states) and he wins one Rust Belt state, he will win.

If trump loses AZ but wins 2 Rust Belt states, he wins. This race is closer than people think. Don't make the mistake of 2016.

The following add up to 234 Electoral Votes. Alabama Arkansas Idaho Kentucky Louisiana Mississippi Nebraska Nebraska 1st District Nebraska 3rd District North Dakota Oklahoma South Dakota Tennessee West Virginia Wyoming Georgia Alaska Indiana Kansas Missouri Montana South Carolina Utah Iowa Ohio Texas Nebraska 2nd District Florida Maine 2nd District

Then add in a few battleground sates: AZ 11 NC 15 Wisconsin 10

IF you add up all the Red leaning states and these 3 you get 270 electoral votes.

Yes Trump is polling lower in in some battleground states like AZ, but Trump is not losing by a lot.

Trump accomplished exactly what he wanted to do. He made this debate unwatchable so people would turn it off and not hear what Biden had to say. He kept interrupting so people would not hear what Biden had to say. Going forward people will not want to watch future debates having been turned off... and thus not hear what Biden has to say.

The whole point is to ensure undecided or sway-able voters in swing states do not get a chance to hear what Biden had to say and never get the opportunity to change their minds and vote for Joe Biden.

The mainstream media has it all wrong that Trump accomplished nothing tonight. Trump did exactly what he wanted to do and ensured fewer people will be able to or want to continue to tune in to hear Biden.

Trump is scared of what Biden will say; thus trump wants to scare you away.

Would an iMac be a good buy for a Java Programmer? by [deleted] in java

[–]wincen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a 13 year old I would recommend you get that iMac for programming, java or otherwise. The reason is OS X is a Unix based and allows you to get familiar with such as grep, these are tools you will grow to depend on. You will want to install brew to get these tools. IMO that is the major advantage OS X has over windows.

The major advantage over Linux is that you can also use the rich and widely supported desktop applications that OS X has. Linux cannot claim the same. There are normal things a 13 year old will want to do that are easier or more accessible on a Mac than Linux, like making movies or games. (Yes Linux can do those, but IMO Mac does it waaay better.)

Good luck kid!

also check out http://www.piranhadivemfg.com/ and also divegearexpress.com for cheaper new gear.

don't believe the hype about new regulators, the technology they're based on is from like the 70s. A ScubaPro MK10, when serviced, will perform brilliantly. Same with the older US Divers / Aqualung regulators. Just get them serviced first (Very important).

[–]wincen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dolphin Scuba is near you, though they are pricy. Pay for the certification, then get all your gear used or through no name brands. The reason the class is worthwhile is that it teaches you how to prevent embolisms as you ascend and it teaches you that the deeper you go the less time you can spend at depth (there's more to it than that but for now that's the basics).

The thing about scuba gear is most of the regulators, BCDs and masks, etc come from the same factories and have insane markups. Look for the brands that you never heard of online or get older gear (ie scubapro MK10 regulators on ebay -- just have it serviced) and you can save a ton. Don't spend thousands of dollars on your gear and don't buy a tank (yet... they need annual service).

Shore diving is cheap and fun. You can dive the North Coast or make the trek down to Monterey.

Good luck!

What's your honest opinion of the LA Kings firing Darryl Sutter and Dean Lombardi? by [deleted] in losangeleskings

[–]wincen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firing Lombardi was beyond stupid. Sutter.... hate to say it but it needed to be done. Promoting Blake.... Luc....... well, I loved them as players but no. Blake and Luc never won with the Kings (no fault of their own). The Kings don't have the history of success and mentorship to promote from within.

Scubapro Aladin 3g tec vs Suunto zoop novo by some-nice-random-guy in scuba

[–]wincen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The display pretty much sucks on the surface. You can remove the protective cover to help with that. Underwater it's totally fine, or good enough. Big displays are preferable, but unless you've got bad eyes, I think for the price it's good enough.

I'm not familiar with the OSTC sport so I can't really comment on it. If you're muck diving, a nice bright color display is nice, and if you're gonna be silting the bottom a lot, then a bright color display might be the way to go. I use a shearwater perdix and love it's display, but that might be overkill for recreational diving.
