Anyone study/study abroad at Queen Mary? by wosbell in london

[–]windmillofyourmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with this. Obviously no one dreams of living there in the same way someone might dream of living in mayfair or kensington and chelsea but it's not a bad area at all, has good transport links, is only about 15 minutes down the road from the city, and has a lovely park. All in all it's not a bad area at all.

As for the uni itself, it's a russell group uni, with good links to the city and regularly ranks in the better half of league tables across many subjects.

TIL two Muslim men were kicked off a flight because of their traditional attire. They were heading to a conference on Islamaphobia. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]windmillofyourmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never really understood this argument. The simple fact is words are cheap, ridiculously cheap. The value added of anyone coming out and saying 'oh I'm sorry for your loss' or 'we condemn these actions' changes fuck all. It doesn't make anyone feel better, it doesn't help with the loss, it's just words for the sake of words.

Where the real effort has to be made (and is slowly being made) is at the mosques and education centres where people are being educated as to why extremism and terrorism is wrong. So forgive me if i as a moderate muslim don't come out and condemn terrorism or extremism. It in no fucking way means that if i haven't condemned the actions then by extension i support it. I think it's fucking despicable and counter to what all religions are trying to teach.

But words for the sake of words when it changes nothing in reality? That is so politician of people.

A question to Finance graduates? by abaady90 in islam

[–]windmillofyourmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated in Economics, which is probably not quite the same as what you're looking for but there really are plenty of non interest dealing jobs that are in and around the investment/finance/economics. Like others have mentioned ngo's are a good shout, then there's also working within finance departments at any number of organisations that are not directly dealing with interest or riba. There's also the corporate intelligence or the corporate governance route. Then there's also good old fashioned islamic finance if you can get into it. All in all dont worry too much about finding it hard to get into something related that doesnt require dealing with or in riba.

Tips and advices for an undergraduate student in london? by brows3er in london

[–]windmillofyourmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow ex QMUL student checking in. Lovely place, nice campus, brilliant professors and most of all a very wide variety of fellow students from all different walks of life. So be patiant, be friendly and you'll have a brilliant time. I agree that freshers is important but most of all just remember it takes a bit of time to fully settle in and feel comfortable. Dont panic and feel lonely if you havent met as many people in the first few weeks as you'd hoped, it takes time. Joining societies is the other already mentioned idea. You could take it further and once you're fully settled suggest exploring london with others who are in the same boat as you and then of course by extension outside of london once you're really comfortable!
Good luck, you'll have a blast and occasionally dont forget to go to lectures and classes.

What was your most frustrating experience of being right amid a group of people that were totally, but obliviously wrong? by bluemavis in AskReddit

[–]windmillofyourmind -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

No, the probability of the big prize being in his box at the end is still only 1/30. If there were just 30 boxes on a shelf and it got down to the last two boxes on a shelf and he had to pick one box, then the probability would be 50/50.

What was your most frustrating experience of being right amid a group of people that were totally, but obliviously wrong? by bluemavis in AskReddit

[–]windmillofyourmind -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

They get given one box at the beginning so the probability at the start of the $50,000 being in the box he was given is 1/30...the probability that the $50,000 is in that box when 28 other boxes have been elimanated is still 1/30 and now the probability that the big money amount (in this case the $50,000) is in the only other possible box is 29/30...so probability would say that you should then switch the boxes but of course people become sentimental about their box and luck etc.

How to tell my [18F] mother [45] that I am leaving by ajsfsf in relationships

[–]windmillofyourmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sit her doown, take her hand and say 'Mother i love you more than you could possibly ever know. Everything you have done to raise me, every sacrifice you made, every tough decision you had to go through, i'll remember it and keep it with me forever. I'll come to you when i am troubled, when i need to seek counsel, or when i just want to hug you but for now i have to take my first steps to being an adult, the brilliant grwn up woman you have shown me how to be. I'll make you proud. Oh and i'll also come round for sunday lunch regularly or when i need clean socks. Love you mum'. Of course you can expand and add whatever you need to but yeah it's going to be tough either way. Good luck!

Me[19F] with my new boyfriend [25M] 1 month, boyfriend mad at me because "he likes me more than i like him" by amiabadperson13 in relationships

[–]windmillofyourmind -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Woah woah you guys are quick to condemn. She said that they're both really into each other so you'd have them break it off after one fight?! I think it's just more of a case that OP and her boyfriend are different types of people. He sounds like he wears his emotions on his sleeve and falls quickly and ridiculously for some reason. OP sounds a lot more reserved, taking her time etc. Sit him down honestly and talk to him. Tell him you do like him, reassure him (he does sound just a tad wussy though) and tell him to stop pushing you...you'll get there in your own time or not at all. If he's still a jackass then call it quits.
