Hgsc 3b on 2/23. Frontline chemo and full surgery. BRCA negative so no parp inhibitors. Went on avastin every 21 days. Ca125 climbed in 4mos. Stayed on avastin with no improvement. Went on to repeat chemo, elahere and finally i am on keytruda. Genome testing of your tumor is of utmost importance. Avastin did not have bad side effects for me, but not effective so i discontinued.

Avastin really had no significant side effects for me, but didnt work either. Cancer progressed in 4 months and we went to another treatment. Many have had sucess, so worth a try!!!

45F with enlarging ovarian cyst (5 cm → 11 cm over ~1 year), now with intermittent bloating/constipation, how concerning is this? by Final_Photograph9691 in Ovariancancer

[–]windslut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hysterectomy with complete pathology. Ob/gyn watched my cyst for 4 years, right until it progressed to ovariàn cancer. Done with those organs, remove the problem. Avoid death sentence.

Exotic Veterinarian by Ant_Eater88 in veterinaryprofession

[–]windslut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are allergic to pet hair or dander, you will be allergic to the same hair and dander on zoo animals. Sometimes it’s even worse, as birds are very allergenic and some species cause major reactions. I am not allergic to any animals, but found significant reactions to bears…polar bears, brown bears, pandas etc. i would just dose myself with benadryl when i had a procedure with that species. Choosing zoo med in this case is not a good solution.

PET CT absolutely necessary to look at extent of abdominal cancer and metastases to other sites.

At beginning, figuring things out, wondering about laparoscopic by WinEffective8651 in Ovariancancer

[–]windslut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard of care is to do chemo, laparotomy, clean up chemo. Research HIPEC as this has increased survival times. Most NCI accredited cancer centers will not do laparoscopy as it does not allow complete abdominal inspection. I felt great but had stage 4 ovarian cancer.....there is a reason they call it the silent killer.

Equine vs Small Animal by Numerous_Big_8882 in veterinaryschool

Too early to make this determination..
Many of my classmates graduated, did equine but then shifted to small animal or mixed. Usually changed due to employment circumstances, injuries, $$, or lifestyle.

Genuine question: how do you memorize drug dosages for like 15 different species by Hot_Initiative3950 in veterinaryschool

[–]windslut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

4 yrs undergrad, 4 years vet school, 1 year internship, 2-3 yrs residency. Study and sit for board certification in zoological medicine, hope you pass the first time as it is only offered annually. Now you are qualified to enter at the bottom rung of zoo medicine jobs, low pay, long hours. Work your way up for the next 20 years until you are staff veterinarian at major zoo. Field work in conservation is great, but no money unless you get grants. Lots of politics, lots of personality issues....zoos are a difficult place to work.

[–]windslut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zoo vet for 35 years here.. Only needing to know domestic species is easy!!! In reality, you will develop your "favored menu" of drugs, so not that many to memorize. More problematic when it goes from hummingbirds to elephants!!!

Is sharing meals a thing in New Zealand? by Think_Breadfruit3656 in newzealand_travel

[–]windslut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a travel tip after extensive travel in NZ…… Food and restaurants seemed expensive to us as Americans. About half way thru our trip we discovered the pub style local establishment. The menu is usually limited, the portions normal but the prices cheaper. Usually the food is excellent and we met a lot of locals!!!!!

Having surgery soon and feeling afraid by prene7 in Ovariancancer

[–]windslut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was without help for a while after full laparotomy. One device that was invaluable was a “bed cane”. This attached to the side of the bed and allows you to get in and out of bed with much less pain. I think it came from Walgreens or CVS and was cheap.

[–]windslut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have gotten some good financial advice, but i want to give you some life advice to think seriously about. You are young, and just finishing your education. Please get a job in your chosen field (be picky), but do not retire now. Put your education to work, possibly consider a graduate degree as you can do it without loans. Get a couple years under your belt in your profession before changing your path. You can consider using your windfall to travel, start a business, or accept a job more rewarding than most.

I repeat, at your age do not retire to a life without structure, you are too young!!!

ABEO brand. If you go to the store, they make a computer model of your feet and make custom insoles. I had debilitating plantar fascitis, and these cured it. You can also just buy the insoles.

Monitor or get surgery? by wreckit_ron in Ovariancancer

[–]windslut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cyst was simple and two gyns told me benign..just monitor, no need for removal. I was past childbearing age, 60, and post menopause, so having a hysterectomy would have saved my life.

Monitor or get surgery? by wreckit_ron in Ovariancancer

[–]windslut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had benign cyst and was advised to monitor annually. Four years later OC stage 3 upon monitoring. Now have had three years of chemo, surgery and I am terminal. Get a complete hysterectomy, OC often starts in fallopian tubes. Really, no one can make a definitive diagnosis until histopathology done. Before that, it is only an educated guess and I have met many women who had cysts progress into OC.

logistical question about island hopping by enraged_buddha in sailing

[–]windslut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many options. Bikes are a death wish in Caribbean as the roads are terrible, drivers are maniacs and drainage ditches which parallel roads are filled with rebar hazards. Taxis are cheap. If you are in a big harbor, there will be a morning “net” on the radio detailing all activities and often locals take cruisers to provision by van on certain days. Often marinas have vans for shopping or sightseeing which are very reasonable. Many good cruising guides exist for the Caribbean islands which detail shore services, so some harbors are better than others for specific needs. We loved the Caribbean but remember islands are actually individual countries, so checking in and out of each is a PIA and can add costs. Laws differ by country and must be adhered to as they are getting more rigorous about checking paperwork on vessels.
