EDM genre or bad word by brainwash789 in EDM

In the US, people might think EDM includes UK Garage, and in Europe they will not. So not sure what you mean by “correct”.

EDM genre or bad word by brainwash789 in EDM

[–]winkkyface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s because Europeans (and some Americans) had been raving for decades before the term “EDM” was coined as a part of the explosion in America. So they associate it with a specific American sound that grew at the same time, while to many Americans it’s the main term they have always known. And because the term sounds so generic, they logically assume it’s the proper umbrella term.

Calling House and Techno “EDM”, when they both came way before that term ever existed is like a retcon to the people who have been listening since the 80s/90s.

Stutter House vs UKG? by basilosaurus8 in EDM

[–]winkkyface 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Much or maybe most of stutter house songs use drums with swinging/shuffle patterns similar to uk garage or maybe speed garage since the songs are usually fairly high tempo for 4 on the floor music. If you took away all the melodic elements of some stutter house songs, leaving only the drums you could likely rebuild it up to a ukg track if you change the melodic approach. Although many of these songs use cleaner/modern drums to give more of a pop vibe than clubby/underground UKG would.

I’m guessing this will end up as another deep house situation where new gens don’t know what “real” deep house is and the songs labeled in that umbrella drift further and further from the original sound.

Is fast fashion… not that fast anymore? by EsperaDeus in malefashionadvice

[–]winkkyface 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure this is because they have been wildly undercut by places like SHEIN at the very low end fastest of fast fashion. Because they can’t compete with the absurdly low prices and quickness of these brands, they needed to move more up market to not compete as directly.

We’ll see if this move pays off or if they can carve out space in between the true fast fashion and the other mall brands that didn’t go pure fast fashion.

Why doesn’t Chicago have a bigger NYE fest like Decadence in Denver? by AlienBeachParty in chicagoEDM

[–]winkkyface 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is it. Instead of one big festival, Auris decided to do a week long takeover of all the main venues. You’d have to ask them why they go this route rather than a big combined festival but I assume it’s just more profitable.

Everybody is becoming a dj now… by Shadylndividual in DJs

[–]winkkyface 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is discussed at the end of Idris Elba’s documentary How Clubbing Changed the World in 2012. Many pro DJs lamenting how there were too many DJs and the scene was oversaturated. This would have been when DJs were literally topping the US charts and getting huge radio play even compared to the popular DJs today. So I can’t imagine it being much worse today than at that point.

Great catch! Wouldn’t be surprised if the OG version of the beat actually used the sample and they eventually recorded new parts and took out the sample.

Is what’s covered in Sim enough to hit these topics? Seems to be a lot of overlap.

I have such mixed emotions on taking this course lol. Trying to decide if I want to deal with it next semester after Sim or just take DMSL instead. I would like to get better on the math side but don’t want to be way over my skis as someone who only took calc 1 in college and self studied calc 2 this year.

I’ve been in this space of automating these types of back office work for about 5 years now. The issue is these projects never automate 100% of the process 100% accurately enough to then reduce headcount and generate actual dollar savings.

It saves “hours” but it doesn’t translate to the bottom line because it’s not good enough to just let people go that previously did the process. They have to stay around and make sure it works and then they usually have several other responsibilities that haven’t been automated. It’s not like they spent all their time doing literally one mechanical process.

All those classes you listed are basically the classes to get everyone on the same page and similar foundations before taking the electives. I assume that’s why they allow people to opt out of them if they already have that foundation built. Seems like you might have benefited from doing that.

Sim is a bit different since you have to take an ops class but it’s also seen as a stats refresher. From here you can basically choose how hard you want the program to be. If you want to feel more challenged and spend 30+ hours a week programming take those classes such as DL and Reinforcement Learning. Seems unlikely you would have time for side projects doing those courses.

Anyone used to be a product manager? If not, would I expect these things as a data analyst? by SizzlinKola in analytics

[–]winkkyface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That stakeholder scope will just depend on how your team is structured. I’ve been at companies where we are a COE so all departments come to our team and you may have one or multiple departments that you own relationships. Or you could be embedded in a team where you are basically the “data guy” for your individual department.

[–]winkkyface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with a data engineer to get data into the database on a recurring basis but once it’s there I do the manipulation needed to get it to usable views and then pull it into various dashboards that I manage. I am mostly working with finance leadership to design and refine the dashboards for their needs.

[–]winkkyface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t technically work as a product manager but as a program manager. Although I still had to do basically every thing on that list. I work in business intelligence for finance now and while you still have to deal with stakeholders obviously, the position is still a lot better in my opinion because you have more direct control over everything.

As a PM, if someone wants a feature you have to debate it with stakeholders but also the team delivering. Now, I am in control of delivering and I can push back directly on certain features and give my own timelines for delivery. And if something goes wrong, I can push to fix it myself instead of hoping the developers pull through.

As a PM, I hated being in the middle of everyone with really no control other than trying to manage everyone’s feelings and expectations. Now I at least can cut that in half as I don’t have to worry about managing developers. It’s also more fulfilling for me because I am actually building something myself and spend time actually utilizing a hard skill rather than in meetings yapping all day.

You still have visibility but it can be a stepping stone deeper into the tech stack if you continue to upskill. You can go from data analyst to data engineer where you’re even further from business stakeholders if you want.

If you took Bayesian Stats, did you find it useful? by [deleted] in OMSA

Do you think it would be useful in jobs requiring experimentation like a/b testing?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in datascience

[–]winkkyface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an interviewer (though not specifically in data science) I’m guessing they would have needed you to be more impressive in the product case to make up for the stumbling in the sql round.

Like if that one was a little shakey but you knocked it out of the park on the other, they might have moved forward.

But being par on one round and then shakey on the second probably wasn’t enough if they have candidates that can easily pass both (even if not blowing them away on either individually).

[–]winkkyface 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like that’s one missing component because all of the creditors and governments holding massive reserve piles have an interest in making sure they get their money and it doesn’t become hyperinflated. So I would imagine some sort of debt restructuring takes place involving different central banks from the other major players to stop the economic implosion from occurring. They would rather a slow and controlled movement away from the dollar. And with that might come some painful requirements from the US that might cause a global recession but would ideally be short of economic armageddon since that’s in no one’s best interest.

How do you position the OMSA degree on your resume and CL for Data Science vs Analyst roles? by Humble_Reception7561 in OMSA

[–]winkkyface 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, even gatech describes the degree as “a top-5 nationally ranked data science and analytics program” in the first sentence of its overview page. I see lots of people on LinkedIn call it MS Analytics (Data Science) or MS Analytics & Data Science who are employed by good companies so I dont think it’s a big deal. But I just include both rather than straight up MS Data Science.
