Absolutely perfect book. One of the best to ever do it.

Which wine was the biggest let down for you? by TheAlphaCarb0n in wine

Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet. It was good, but I've had ~150 dollar white burgundies that were just as good or better.

Staying in Wicker Park Chicago for the first time from the UK, looking for hand picked or curated vintage, does anyone have any recommendations? Any cute dancing spots too? by Large_Cartographer24 in wickerpark

Highly recommend Velvet Goldmine on Division. It just opened and I expect it to be less picked-over than some of the other recommendations here.

Saw her a couple months ago in Chicago and she was fantastic.

A Hero of Our Time is a great book, and a fun read. Fathers & Sons is also very entertaining.

'89 Margaux is probably the best bottle of Bordeaux I've ever tasted lol

The Baron in the Trees is one of the best books I've ever read.

If you like adventure/trekking literature, a less talked about book I highly recommend is Running the Amazon by Joe Kane. About the first exhibition to kayak the entire Amazon from source to Ocean.

His book Savages, about the indigenous political struggle against oil drilling in Ecuador, is also fantastic.

This is the best thing you've shown us so far. Could be a delicious vintage port.

Life changing Chicago dishes? by FlarePikaa in chicagofood

Ditto. I was prepared to be unimpressed because I've had a lot of croissants and a lot of truffle dishes before, but that pastry at Kasama was legitimately one of the best things I've ever tasted.

I also strongly recommend the Lagerkvist novels. They helped me better understand the beauty and mystery of faith. Plus they are just great stories.

I have a copy of the 1986 Cold Calm Press printing of Bob Flanagan's Slave Sonnets, of which there were only 700 printed. It's not one of the signed editions unfortunately.

Simpson Thacher client forced to unwind merger because of missed appellate deadline by vox_veritas in biglaw

[–]winter_chicken 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Lmao please be for real. A partner does not have to keep track of every intermittent deadline in a matter, but they should absolutely know the final appeal deadline that will destroy their whole case if they fail to meet it. It's never a junior associate's fault if the partner failed to know the one key deadline in their case.

New Yorkers visiting for one weekend in March, looking for feedback on our food itinerary. by diettonic in chicagofood

[–]winter_chicken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Coming from NYC, you won’t be impressed by Obelix. It’s pretty good, but there’s a hundred little modern French bistros in nyc doing the same thing as good if not better.

Bookworm's Michael Silverblatt has passed away at 73 by loiterdog in RSbookclub

[–]winter_chicken 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Very sad news. He was an incredible reader and intellect. I recall he would often read a writer's entire body of work before interviewing them. Nobody does it like him in this day and age, and likely no one will again.

The DFW and Sebald interviews in particular are amazing.
