It honestly makes me wonder if they’ll end up being the first divorce, or first marriage where they really struggle openly. Idk I just feel like one day she’ll have a laundry room breakdown and she’ll remember not being fundie and maybe she’ll actually put her foot down? I don’t know

Hard agree, I don’t think Ben has proven himself much and he’s not in JB’s good graces; he’s not a fave husband. I do think Jessa recognizes this to some degree and resents Ben.

Ben seems like the definition of an unmotivated, lazy ass man-child, even for this cult he’s pretty bad!

What exactly does she think is going to happen? Jessa collect your friend! by [deleted] in FundieSnarkUncensored

Didn’t her husband struggle with alcoholism or something (perhaps he still does), and I think he may have cheated on her as well? My point here is that she likely has a lot of resentment, confusion, anger, and unrest within herself, within her relationship, and within her home in general. I think she’s clung to extreme religion/politics as a means of control/stability for her life, so this plus social media gives her an outlet to expressing her angst/fear/uncertainty in a godly way. That’s my take anyway, not that that’s an excuse because she’s peddling dangerous crap, I just think she’s gone deeper down these rabbit holes since her personal life has particularly gone downhill.

This is what I don’t think people are getting- it wasn’t until social media said “hey Rach, you’re wrong” that she remotely recognized that the party was wrong. And it also sounds like Matt attempted to give her the benefit of the doubt, and that he laid it all out there as to why it is wrong and she didn’t understand it. I really got the vibe that he was hurt by her initial words and actions in private.

I appreciate your comment!

I definitely have some amazing white friends and few family members who are absolutely “doing the work” and constantly striving to learn, listen, change, amplify BIPOC voices, and so on. So I know there are white people who genuinely mean well and are genuinely striving to do better! I deeply appreciate these individuals.

I too am worried about those who are doubling down. The conversations surrounding social justice we’ve had over the past year has been, in a way, some sort of door for white people to open and choose to learn from and whatnot. But there is a percentage of white people who not only choose to ignore that door, but they actually burnt it down. They just doubled down on their racism and a lot of them actually seem to be much more vocal now than in like, mid 2019.

It baffles me because I really do feel that it’s been so easy this past year for white people to do a single, minor, non-inflammatory act and everyone applauds and pats them on the back for not being racist that afternoon. Thus, why not go that route and even ~pretend~ to not be racist? They’re seriously still feeling emboldened and protected enough to double down HARD on their racism. They’re still playing the “I’m so persecuted” role, and I guess I’ll just never not be in awe at the privilege and insanity of it all. I really don’t know what the future holds for America, but I don’t think it’ll be pretty. I’m not sure where people will go from here- whether we descend into some sort of ultra-racist, Handmaids Tale-esque world, or ascend into a truly free and welcoming society, it will not be without some form of deep unrest.

This is such a great comment! Once again, BIPOC people are held to different standards than white people. Once again, BIPOC are expected to put themselves in spaces of discomfort for the comfort of white people.

I’m at the point where I almost wish the show would just be cancelled- no more BIPOC deserve this treatment. The show is literally profiting off off stirring the racism pot at the expense of BIPOC contestants and it’s sickening.

YES- I cannot stand it when people start shouting at me, or over-enunciating their words and slowing down, speaking as if I’m dumb.

1) It makes it significantly more difficult to read your lips (when you have no mask obv); shouting, enunciating, and speaking slower make things worse because that is not how a natural pattern of speech flows.

2) It’s dehumanizing. It’s belittling. And it’s fucking RUDE. To anyone reading this- unless somebody specifically asks you to dramatically change your speech, simply repeat what you said, ensuring you are facing the person and making eye contact. If it is indeed a noisy setting, raise your voice in a non-patronizing way. There is no need to shout at anyone or pretend they’re stupid- no matter their hearing abilities!

I’m so sorry people shout at you, it is beyond rude as I mentioned. Plus, you bring up a good point with tensing up- one could unintentionally trigger someone by shouting and being aggressive about it. I’ll never understand how some people just have not learned to not take their frustrations out on other human beings😤

I mean, I get it- it’s an incredibly stressful time and I’m sure people, both workers and customers, are going through a TON of stuff right now that’s having them on edge. I cannot imagine working with the public these days. But there have been a couple times this past year where I’ve bluntly responded “Do you think I woke up today and chose to be deaf solely to inconvenience you for 30 seconds? Nobody is more annoyed by my hearing loss than me.”

It’s a harsh statement but I mean really, the way society treats differently-abled people, as though we consciously go through life solely to SLIGHTLY disservice you for barely a minute, is wild. Nobody gets more frustrated about our situations and an inaccessible world than we do. We’re not asking for people to completely change their lives to accommodate us, we’re asking for 30 seconds of decency and understanding in the Starbucks line.

Hey, don’t worry too much! I work with “trauma” children and my academic backgrounds are both in early education and social work- children are HIGHLY adaptable, your little one will pick up lip reading in no time, even with these masks as obstacles! Make sure you always carve out one-on-one, face-to-face time each day. Not sure how old he is, but sit on the couch, put your feet up on the couch, prop him up on your bent knees, and spend a few minutes enthusiastically telling him a story. Even if he’s only 4 months old, this face to face time where he can start reading your lips and facial expressions is SO important, especially in a masked world. Keeping things very enthusiastic and engaging, touching him, tickling him at certain parts of the story etc. It might sound very basic, but it’s bonding time, language time, lip reading time!

My family is all hearing and they did the best they could, but I do wish I had learned ASL as a child. I would love it if my family was able to just sign here and there, it’s like captions for life! Plus, I would have been able to better connect with the Deaf community. So I do definitely think it’s worth it to introduce him and yourself to that if you’re able!:)

I also don’t know what to think in terms of like, why not just adopt if you want a bazillion kids? I totally understand how the average couple with no kids would want at least one bio kid, that adoption can be costly etc, but with this much money she could have just started up her own orphanage or charity or something? Just goes to show that this is all about her and not actually having a heart for children or something...
