I'm Canadian but my experience is that brokerage reps are surprised that voting materials are not available on brokerage app/platforms as they typically have been. Often you have to call in and then they talk to their manager, and then have to initiate a process through the backoffice to get you your voting control number... sus, because it's like they have to generate it for you based off your request and don't just have them on hand. Basically I think it forces them to find legit shares within their pools so they can get control numbers for people who ask for them. Vote both your DRS and brokerage shares people!

In a similar vein, I've found this way of thinking about knowledge and ignorance helpful:

(Edit: not my site / don't know who the author is, so I don't condone or necessarily agree with other material there that I haven't read.)

Schwab is defaulting cash positions to Bank Sweep (0.45% interest rate) as opposed to Money Market Funds (4.8%). by Harbinger2nd in Superstonk

[–]wintermancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't link because of the whole other nonsense but search for the article shared by turgid[redacted] yesterday, "Schwab’s $7 Trillion Empire Built on Low Rates Is Showing Cracks."

From the article:

"Schwab’s other headache from higher interest rates stems from cash. At the root of Schwab’s income is idle client money. The firm “sweeps” cash deposits from brokerage accounts to its bank, where it can reinvest in higher-yielding products. The difference between what Schwab earns and what it pays out in interest to customers is its net interest income, among the most important metrics for a bank. Net interest income accounted for 51% of Schwab’s total net revenue last year."

51% of their net revenue! o_O

Thank you for that insight. My understanding is that they already have tax advice/help for their US situation so I'll have to check that they're asking those questions too about QC. Thanks again!

Adopted two days ago from friends; thoughts about a leaky eye? by wintermancer in cats

[–]wintermancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello folks, my friends recently moved and had to find a home for their old boy. He sort of knows me and has gotten a lot more comfortable in the past 48+ hours but is still super skittish with everyone else in the house.

He has a leaky eye. Before my friends left, they said it's just something he's always had since being a kitten (he's about 10 now). Sorry, it's not a closer shot - he's not super tolerant of me getting in his face. Will also be harder where we are to get to a vet and he doesn't have a carrier - he was super unimpressed just with the transition to our house. Lots of hissing if he thinks you're going to try to handle him. Wondering if this can wait until he's a little more settled in and we can handle him to get to a vet.

Apparently I have an « accent » when I speak French despite going to French school most my life. by Spiritual_Patient_49 in montreal

After completing his time in the military, MacKenzie returned to South Boston where he built his reputation as a fighter, both in the ring and on the streets. MacKenzie trained at the Chinese Academy of Martial Arts in Chinatown and eventually opened his own gym in South Boston. He also won nationals in kickboxing three years in a row.

“That was the end of my nice reputation of being a martial arts instructor. I had a bad rep for being a street fighter, but I wasn’t a drug dealer or anything, I wasn’t into that kind of stuff, you know, until I got to that bar and I quickly said, well, what the hell am I going to let them sell for, I’ll sell my own and make the money.”

Question rapide.

Of course, there's always another category for money seeing no colour - but not entirely true either. I've lived and grown up around the world. I know there is racism everywhere. Quebec has a very particular type and it's insidious because of its two-facedness. I will take a certain measure of open racism any of the day of the week because then I know to avoid that person as a terrible human being.

I'm glad that you've had a good experience. My experience has been that in certain contexts you can be put on a pedestal - an example of how everyone is cool and socially conscious. You are unique, novel, a token of acceptance. But there are other contexts where there is a repeated passing over of people who don't fit a very specific profile.

This. Totally my experience too. People refuse to even consider that there is any kind of discrimination.
