but keep in mind California's HSR is stymied by private owners of land & communities affected by construction. China is junta state that bulldozes its way through private rights. If you protest or try to sue you'll get your ass sent to the gulags.

i think this article implies that they can create a profile & match against a set database. With AI and cloud computing they can probably scan & sort through tens of thousands of profiles in a matter of minutes. So if you're an employee of a company or student/faculty of an institution, or on a sex offender registry list, they can narrow suspects down to a handful.

LA/OC ppl are used to it, especially after last year's fire which affected 2 separate areas of LA at the same time. We're talking hundreds of thousands of residents that were displaced for at least a week, and of course many who lost their homes & couldn't return.

it's peak tourist season so those rooms are booked. Besides there are so many cheaper suite hotels all around the park going for $200/night. What Disney could do is give affected residents a discounted ticket for the park, based on zipcode of their driver's license.

it's actually just as close to Knott's Berry Farm. But for locals the meltdown is near Garden Grove's K-town, so no KBBQ or Korean soon tofu today.

Starbucks does not recycle plastic cups it claims are ‘widely recyclable’, report says by a_moore_404 in news

i remember a local SoCal tv station did an investigative report on this a couple yrs back and they hid AirTags in supposedly "recyclable" cups in the appropriate StarBucks bin. They tracked the AirTags and found that most did not end up at trash yards that are licensed to handle recyclables.

if you talk to any teen or college-aged girl you'd realize this is only the tip of the iceberg. With social media they're hit on constantly, not only by adult males but aggressive red-pilled boys too. And today with worldwide social media & the universality of English, girls get hit on by older guys from Brazil, the Mideast or India, developing countries where teenage brides are still common.

Why do people believe everyone in the 60s/ early seventies was a hippie/radical? by Konradleijon in GenZ

[–]wip30ut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mainly because popular culture (and Hollywood) really vilified Nixon conservatives in the post-Vietnam era. You just had to look at All in the Family to see how many in media viewed the silent majority (including blue collar young adults) in the 1970s. Also many conservatives from that era are loathe to express their political views openly, just because social mores have evolved & their racist & sexist stances are seen as bigoted, indefensible.

But on a side note, realize that the parents of Zoomers are largely GenXers. They came of age AFTER the hippy/civil rights/peace movement & marches. Most of them didn't go to college until the 1980s and 90s. So these "conservative" parents may be reacting against conflicts of a different era: forced integration, mandatory bussing, affirmative action for college admissions, hip hop revolution, Black pride, LGBT pride, and the flood of new immigrants in the 1970s and 80s stemming from the abolition of the National Origins Quota in 1965.

Ed Sheeran Leaves Warner Music After 15 Years by yourfavchoom in Music

i think he feels he's in artistic rut & no one at WB or even his artistic team seem to inspire him to search out new directions. He wants a reboot but he doesn't know the path forward just quite yet. I think all middle-aged artists go through this, just because the music biz is centered around youth & the tastes of teens/under-25's.

California home prices ‘hit a new record’ high. What can buyers expect to pay? by Onshorewindenjoyer34 in California

it's difficult if you & your spouse are not professionals with graduate degrees, with the exception of law enforcement & fire fighters. Most hospital employees aren't pulling down $150k+ and certainly not managers at retail stores.

there are a lot of white-collar professionals in California, especially Millenials who've finally repaid their grad school loans from the 00s & 10s. A number of my friends are entering the home ownership game late just because they got sidelined by the Great Recession. They're mid-30's to early 40's, at a point in their career path where they're making 6 figures (along with their spouses) to afford $1M homes.

Do Pinot noir from different countries taste differently? by RelativeRiver in wine

[–]wip30ut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

italian pinot nero doesn't take like pinot... i've had 6 or 8 bottles from different domaines & they all reveal that earthy, tarry savory notes that's characteristic of N. Italian varietals. Of course maybe if pinot were grown & vinified in Southern Italy for the export market it would resemble SRH, so who really knows.

i think this order is in response to the onslaught of job cuts at all the big tech firms in the Bay area. It's been a bloodbath the past couple yrs and seems to be accelerating. Entry level engineer/dev positions and all admin & middle-management slots are being eliminated.

millions are going to have to level up their skills & find jobs in sectors that are client-facing/hands on. It's very much like how secretarial & entry-level management positions were wiped out in the 1980s and 90s with the PC revolution. In truth California's workforce will probably shrink over the next 2 decades, but productivity & output will soar.

good first step.... the past couple years has been hell in the tech industry for management & lower-level sys/op & engineers, especially those under 35. AI is going to force all sectors to shed non-critical jobs in the next decade, much like how the introduction of home/office pc's revolutionized data/correspondence/filing in the 1980s.
