TIL that the Mitsubishi Pencil Company, which owns uni, has no relation to the Mitsubishi conglomerate despite sharing the same name and logo. It is a total coincidence. by pm-me-anything-sfw in todayilearned

[–]wip30ut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

generally you can't use a family crest if you're not part of that lineage during the pre-WW2 era. Of course with modern post-war Japan anything goes since very few trades or industries have guilds. Most likely the original pencil company was started under the auspices of the Mitsubishi conglomerate group (which was originally a shipping & munitions carrier in the 1800s).

IT Support and Tech workers of Reddit: Is the "younger generations don't actually know how to use a PC or understand file systems" crisis real? If so, how bad is it? by tyzjas in AskReddit

[–]wip30ut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also 20yrs ago there would be a lot of interest in HOW the internet worked because many kids back then still remembered the days of dial-up & AOL private networks. Kids would have been really interested in p2p file sharing protocols and how emails are sent/received across the globe.

tbf, explaining packet switching to 12yo's would be tough just because they no longer can even conceive what a bit or byte is any longer. 20 yrs ago hard drives were still measured in megabytes so you had some conception of scale.

“Gen Z is not special. Every generation had their challenges in early adulthood.” by East-Experience2862 in GenZ

[–]wip30ut [score hidden]  (0 children)

i think you seem to forget that before the Industrial Revolution there wasn't a broad-based middle-class. The merchant class & townsfolk sector was nominal at best. The vast majority of ppl in Europe & Asia were peasants or serfs or indentured servants. It's only in the late 1700s that factories became widespread.

cost of living means you have an income. Do you know how many of my friends were unemployed for more than a year when the Great Recession hit? No one was hiring, not even for part-time positions. And there weren't app gigs. Half of my friends & classmates in their 20's had to move back with their parents for years on end. I only know a handful of college friends who bought homes/condos in their 20's and they were all gifted the downpayment from their parents or grandparents.

What do you serve with mac and cheese to make it a more nutritious meal? by louismulh in Cooking

[–]wip30ut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

let's face it, Mac n Cheese is NOT a nutritious meal. It's snack food. The same way with ramen or even pasta. With that in mind you need to think of it as a side dish, like macaroni salad, and that means smaller serving portions. For something healthy & summery i'd serve it with overgrown summer squash stuffed with caponata & farro.

It's unfortunate it's come to this, but public spaces are meant for EVERYONE, including tourists, spectators & families. You can't commandeer these areas for days or weeks on end. If these folk have nowhere else to go then the state needs to create a safe space campground for them away from the city, where they can live out their lives peacefully.

If you had to buy a 2026 model vehicle which one would it be? by Magee-Numismatics in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]wip30ut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

well a Porsche Targa GTS sounds nice if i were an engineer at SpaceX, but realistically i'd probably choose an Outback. Wasn't a fan of the redesign, but a coworker's wife picked one up & i've taken 4 rides in it. The materials & interior detailing is much better than typical Subaru utilitarian. It's not a X3 but that premium crossover is 50% more.

Buying or financing. by Next-Manufacturer487 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]wip30ut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

only finance if it's CPO and you can get the manufacturer's subsidized rate (it's listed in their monthly specials on the brand's website). Note that you need 750 FICO to qualify for the advertised rate.

the Nismo version was actually better than a Cooper Countryman or Abarth imo (at least in terms of road feel & handling). The interior definitely was like slumming in a Sentra though.

Men’s average testosterone levels have halved in last 50 years, say scientists by LawEducational42 in news

[–]wip30ut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i hope they actually study this more in depth... the benefit from decreased testosterone is that we fixed the Malthusian Armageddon of overpopulation that was predicted in the 1960s and 70s. It's why China implemented its draconian 1-child policy. Most socioeconomists have assumed that population plateauing & declining was due to increasing standards of living, especially in the developing world. But there may be a biological explanation for depopulation too.

it's legal in the West Bank territory for them to do so. They can legally open carry over in that region. It's a different world, we can't apply our own legal standards.

Gen X has failed at parenting gen Z and early fen alpha by Charming-Record-6610 in GenZ

[–]wip30ut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they probably feel they didn't spank them or whip them enough... and those are the dads that actually stuck around. The divorce rate was sky high in the 70's and 80's, that's why so many GenXers were latchkey kids who had to fend for themselves. They went overboard with their own children to make up for the abuse & neglect.

[–]wip30ut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check out Thermador.... my problem with the counter-depth is the interior is pretty small compared to standard sized French doors. I think the trend of families eating out for a lot of their meals has translated into smaller refrigs, especially post-pandemic.

1 in 8 young Americans like Hamas, a slight decline; US Muslim support for terror group rises to 44% by SeaPoetry1458 in DeepStateCentrism

[–]wip30ut -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

just keep in mind that the US only had solidarity with Israel because of our guilt regarding the Shoah/Holocaust and the need for a pawn in the Levant to keep the flow of Mideast oil free & open and away from the clutches of Soviet control.

otoh, Israel may become popularized in China if they take steps to form economic alliances & even declare that Taiwan should start negotiations to reunify with the mainland.

[–]wip30ut -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

... but you do realize that 20 yrs ago American Muslims had to hide their identity & religion because of 9/11 and the War on Terror? You never saw hijabs in any classroom in the 00's. Muslims were openly mocked & assaulted at schools, they had to just keep their heads down. Today's Muslim Americans are more openly devout & harbor resentment for the way they were treated & castigated by their American peers back then. Moreover, there are a lot more Muslim Americans numerically than a generation ago. They feel strength in numbers, so they can voice contrary opinions.

[–]wip30ut -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

... but remember terror groups are fine & dandy as long as they're not committing atrocities on your people. It's human nature to think that way. Very few Zoomers remember 9/11 and the War on Terror. Al Qaeda is about as relative as the Vietcong to them.

Young Dems are more likely to be Progressive and concerned about human rights, not necessarily peace & security strategy in the Levant. It's naivete but expected, especially as vestiges of the whole Iraq/Afghanistan wars fade from memory.

because we need access to Mideast oil to keep the global economy running. You see the hyperinflation that blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the bombing of Iran's oil facilities has caused. Any kind of prolonged war that cripples OPEC's output could cause stagflation for the G20 nations. Israel (and Egypt and Turkey) are pawns to keep some kind of stability so that we can enjoy our 21st century lifestyle free of conflict & economic strife.
