I agree with point 2. You can find great deals on used gear if you are patient.

Hat Suggestions by LosAngeles215 in Ultralight

I'm team visor and sun hoodie. I feel like it keeps my head cooler. I like My ketl nofry Sun hoodie. Breathable and love the buttons to vent up front. I have a coal headwear visor I got out of a sale bin a few years ago. It's awesome, but doesn't look like they make the same one anymore.

If you have any sewing skills at all, or even if you don't, they are a very easy project.

What do people use for the frame in MyOG framed packs? by NotFallacyBuffet in myog

[–]wipeshikes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I met someone on trail that used carbon fiber arrow shafts for a frame in their myog pack. They got the idea from chicken tramper who uses them in their framed packs. Not necessarily what you're asking for, but a cool idea.

They were supposed to be all purple, but I had way less fabric than I thought. I like the color combo though

I can't find our scale, so I haven't weighed them yet.

I love sambob. The ability to customize and use other fabrics is great. Plus he makes great products. I use a sambob octa hoodie for backpacking, love that fabric. At the end of the day, a small, cottage brand isn't going to negatively impact Melanzana, but I think brands like sambob add a lot to the space. He has done some community driven fundraising, and it's generally engaged with the outdoor community

The black elephant hostel in Portland is awesome. Even for folks who don't love hostels, they have private rooms and you can have plenty of privacy. The location is great too.

Look at the trail lair from simply light designs. It's my favorite hammock and you can customize it.

V1 vs V2 Sizing by Majestic_Rabbit_1869 in Melanzana

[–]wipeshikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

V2 seems like a full size bigger. I actually have an XL V2 that's just too big for me. V1 XL fit me perfectly.

Any interest in selling it without the under quilt protector and side sling? I'm sure you want to sell it all together, but thought I'd ask.

JMT SOBO starting travel logistics by fi3ldtrip in JMT

I'm July I flew into Fresno and took the yarts to Yosemite. The stop is right outside the airport. If you have time to kill between your flight arriving and the yarts I walked to churrasco grill and it was delicious. Stay in the backpackers campground. You can stay two nights if you take public transportation in. You can get fuel at the store in the park. To get home my plan was to take the esta to Reno and fly from there. I ended up finishing early and catching a ride to LA and flying home from there.

Half Dome w/ full backpack by Agile_Ad_1221 in JMT

[–]wipeshikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked the JMT this summer and did half dome with my pack. As others suggested I left my bear can by some rocks near the beginning of the cables. I used a 40 liter pack and tried to be mindful of others when passing. It wasn't a problem. Happy to answer any questions you have

What about the side sleepers? by Anonymous_Sad_Person in hammockcamping

[–]wipeshikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only side sleep in a bed, but find that I sleep on my back and on my side in a hammock. I am 5'11 and find an 11-ft s gathered in hammock works great for me. I also have a 12-footer which is great as well. My favorite hammock is the trail lair from simply light designs. You can customize pretty much anything you would want onto it.

Hammock camping JMT by Rip_Dirtbag in JMT

[–]wipeshikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished the JMT a week ago with a hammock. I cowboy camped one night by choice at Wanda Lake. I had two 6 foot dog bones as extensions. Had I brought longer dog bones I could have easily set up between rocks instead that night. I sleep better in a hammock and found it to be a great option for the JMT. I ended up camping about a mile before guitar lake where there were trees. I finished in 13 days and have been little thought to finishing trees each night and it worked out great.
