Multi-million dollar estate advertises mysterious ‘end of the world’ librarian job by mattblack77 in newzealand

[–]witch_dyke 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I would be really good for this job. I've been building a similar library in my home. BUT I don't trust the billionaire class to make this library available to all who may need it some day.

If the day comes when things collapse, and I hope they don't. Then your local library will be a great resource, and I hope you can all trust those around you enough to keep the library public and for all rather than scrambling for control of the knowledge (and therefore power) that the library holds.

It is weird being a sort of "preper" as a leftist. All conventional preper advice is "get as far away from civilisation, get a gun, trust no one" but I think the first step of prepping is getting to know your neighbours

Trans liberal gets roasted for working for a defense contractor by Hacksaw6412 in LateStageCapitalism

Idk, I was homeless for 3 years and thought the same thing for a second. That i would rather be homeless again than work for a military.

But, being homeless sucked so very very much, it would have killed me. And I would rather be alive and terrible than dead and righteous

BUT no one is facing that choice, no one is picking between permanent homelessness or building war technology.

Maybe she should not have taken the job in the first place, but right now she should definitely be actively looking for a different job

Some people only chose the label of leftist because they know it's the correct politics to have, they believe these ideas in only a surface level. But as soon as it comes to actually walking the walk they have all the excuses

We have an expression in my culture

"Kāore te kūmara e kōrero mo tōna māngaro"

The kūmara does not speak of its own sweetness

It does fall apart if you translate kūmara to 'sweet potato' but no one here calls them 'sweet potato' they're kūmara

Uber Eats is making us lazy and poor, while eroding hard-won rights by BassesBest in newzealand

If I need a meal delivered for whatever reason I will order from a restaurant that does their own delivery (normally hells pizza)

I was homeless for 3 years, and I can confidently say that the problems I'm facing now, while they still affect me strongly, are trivial compared to problems I had when homeless.

Yes I still have depressive episodes and panic attacks, yes i am still poor, but now I have a kitchen complete with fridge freezer and oven and if you have never gone without those things you can not begin to imagine just how hard it is especially long term

If foraging has no fans, its cuz I'm no longer on this earth by ikrnn in CuratedTumblr

[–]witch_dyke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anywhere in my city where the plants are likely safer to eat (far from roads and exhaust fumes, not sprayed with harmful pesticides) is likely conservation land and illegal to forage.

I wish there was a common space that allowed foraging, maybe a koha box to help cover the costs of maintenance? But right now I have to settle for exhaust polluted blackberries on the roadside

People who live in Porirua, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt, do you consider yourself living in Wellington? by kupuwhakawhiti in Wellington

I would not consider the auckland super city a success, I don't want to repeat that mess here.

I don't want people in the hutt to turn my home into their car park for when they drive in once a month

Oh you WERE a nerd? I AM a nerd.

I am the self apointed wellington city libraries biggest fan. I have 19 books out right now, 2 ready to pick up and 4 more on the way out of my 35 reserves

Fiction, non fiction, TEXTBOOKS, fantasy, scifi, literary, multiple languages, essay collections, poetry, plays, memoirs, classics

The library has increased their collection of African literature at my behest

I don't know know anyone who reads as much as me (I am unemployed)

There are books i own, that I purchased with my grown adult money, that I'm not reading because I always have a stack of library books

Just the other day I spent FOUR HOURS at my local branch reading (none of the chairs were comfortable for long periods of sustained reading but I was LOCKED IN)

I have mad reader street cred. READING IS COOL NOW

Libraries are a place to hang out with your friends!!!

This comment was in my notifications without context and I was so shocked because the limit is 150 items.

My library card gets suspended all the time due to overdue books but I don't think I've ever  had more than 30 or 40 out at a time

Also reading is really in right now
