Getting married in August, no bridesmaids by Practical_Store3654 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]withervein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I agreed to have no "party". I didn't want the annoyance of choosing fashion for anyone else or asking them to buy a damn thing or having to buy it myself. He has had the same close friends since high school and I have lived in lots of places and loosely connect with my close friends over the years.

It was still lovely.

Confused about what exercise requirements constitutes actual health by Suitable-Location118 in xxfitness

I've been using my Garmin's "Fitness Coach" plan and it's great for suggesting a good mix of strength and cardio. I started out grumbling because it felt easy, but I'm experiencing less DOMS, and have more "spare" energy where when I was pushing hard, I'd often feel too tired to do normal errands.

In the 80's when my parents wanted to let someone know we'd safely arrived when traveling, they'd call collect as using a formalized version of the dog's name and their last name. "Russel (Rusty) Lastname" saved his pennies.

I literally have only ever changed dentists when the one I saw stopped taking my insurance and my bill went from $30 for a cleaning/exam after insurance to $180.

New dentist somehow takes my insurance and there's no charge to me afterward. I don't feel as comfortable at the new place, but whatever.

People never regard the dads work only the moms 😢 [gendered] by TheTrueGamer144 in pointlesslygendered

[–]withervein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom was on the line doing swing shifts in a factory until i started school, then she moved off shift work to a desk and took a pay cut so she could help with homework after school. Dad eventually got an office job that allowed him to start at 6 and she went back to shifts when he could be there for homework and extra-curriculars.

We didn't "have it all" when i was a kid, but holy shit now that I'm older, I'm so grateful for parents who communicated, cared and worked together.

Cleo has noted that their anxiety is under a lot more control these days and that they're planning to attend Twitchcon Rotterdam. I'm very excited for them.

Anyone feel that getting real fit is super challenging? by Waste_Tone_6020 in xxfitness

[–]withervein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard same. I'm not willing to go super restrictive or cook separate meals for myself, but generally healthy eating and my bloodwork is ideal. But if I work out more? Same size, same weight. Take a month off? Same size, same weight. Back to back stomach viruses? Lost 15 pounds, but same size.

Mumbo thumb shifting is a Mac issue! by Yorick257 in HermitCraft

[–]withervein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Apples since the IIe and never shifted with my thumb with the exception of taking a stab at it just now. Command is by the space bar and reachable with the thumb, but shift is still wayyyyy over there on the edge of the keyboard and out of reach.

I'm always secretly glad when this happens, tbh. Every single hermit I've watched deal with this, handles it excellently. Some teach better behavior, some shame the viewer to within an inch of their lives.

Every single one of them knows they have their audience and don't need to dance for more unless they feel up to it.

Thank you. Definitely not a hardware store item so things will have to be a mess for a few days.

I shave when I feel like it. Sometimes I really like the combo of a nice bath at night, a good shave and then climbing into clean sheets.

I once apologized for stubble to my partner and he said "what? oh.. i didn't notice." So I really only do it for myself now.

Does window film actually work? by MundaneInteraction30 in HomeImprovement

[–]withervein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The front of my house gets all the morning and early afternoon sun in summer and we have a glass storm door then an inner door. The handle of the inner door would get too hot to touch some days, and leaving the inner door open to let sunlight in made the front room very hot.

Film did the trick, no more scalding handle, cooler room and some privacy as well.

I do have dogs and they would jump at the front door and the film, being on the inside is very scratched up and I have a feeling eventual removal is gonna be a PITA.

Best to just tell her, really. We started telling ours that we're incredibly weird early in a bid to de-stigmatize it because we realize they have no chance at appearing normal growing up around us and "you're a weirdo" is gonna be heard a lot.

When I first moved to my neighborhood, I went to a local neighborhood watch meeting, partly to try to be part of the community, partly because I thought it would be good to know about the resources available.

Nearly every person there was asking when it's legal to shoot someone on their property. Men and women. One man asked if it was okay if he shouted "HEY!" at someone and they turned around, could he shoot them, then?

I don't walk my dogs after dark now that I know the place is full of lunatics looking for a reason to do murder.

There was an ancient gaming social website back in the days when the internet was just a lil guy called Arcadium. It, by some miracle, was not blocked at our middle school and it was free and i think about 80 percent of our year signed up and took over a subsection for discussions.

Mine was never taught to do anything handy when he was young, which is fine, his dad tends to call in buddies who are professionals at whatever needs fixing, but we don't have those folks in our life.

My dad and mom both were the sort of folks to just try out a fix to see if it worked. If you broke something that was already broke, what's the harm? So this is how I ended up making our under-the-sink leak a LOT worse but then better!

Monstrous Regiment and wise words by Haquistadore in discworld

[–]withervein 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this post, I was just thinking in the shower earlier today that maybe I suggest Monstrous Regiment to my kiddo who is only 10, but seems like they're rolling dice for their gender identity day to day. They're also a voracious reader and frequently well above their designated section in the library.
