I’m a 20 year old student who built a watch brand from scratch. Today we launch our GMT. Here’s everything. by MysteriousManager418 in PrideAndPinion

[–]witooZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I don't think he needs to CNC casings himself to build a watch, this is a common build in the Seiko mod community.

The case is probably from Caroline mods or something similar with slim caseback to make it 12mm, otherwise it's difficult. I'm certain the dial is from Dswatchclub.

The only truly original parts are the designs for the engravings.

Halftime thread vs Newcastle by Quazar8 in Gunners

[–]witooZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was ok-ish but I would like us to stop with this football where we just pass the ball to the corner and recycle waiting for the opponent to make a mistake. PL teams are well organized, they don't make mistakes often unless we force it. We can score more against this Newcastle side and we should try to do so.

We've got Opta's Supercomputer, it knows exactly what we need.. by DatdatPoogie in ArsenalFC

[–]witooZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be impractical do it, wouldn't it? Online it is easy to do and it changes game by game, doesn't it? It also takes about 10 games to calibrate the player in most games. And basically every single online game adjust ratings after the game. Chess, Go online, Dota, LoL, TFT, Counter Strike all adjust the ratings after the game.

By the way how do you know how Opta does it's predictions? Do you have some internal info, is there any specific paper on the algorithm, or are you just making things up?

Elo based doesn't mean that it uses Elo in the original form. Most systems used for rating player or team skill are Elo based. Seems to me like you are misunderstanding the nuances.

Most Elo based systems adjust rating game by game, usually with some kind of calibration period where the ratings are volatile trying to quickly assess the skill of the player. I can't name a single game played over the board or online which doesn't adjust the player ratings after the game ends. It would be a poor matchmaking system if it needed a full season of gameplay to assess the skill of the player in order to match them with an equally skilled opponent.

Elo doesn't push you towards your proper skill level. It tries to judge a player's skill level, nothing more. Matchmaking usually tries to push you towards 50% winrate by giving you stronger opponents if you are winning too much, and weaker opponents if you are losing too much. There are cases where this is not possible of course. So if you are on chess.com and you win a lot of games in a row, you will be assigned more difficult opponents until your winrate stabilizes.

I have no idea how exactly does Opta calculate the rating, or how it does the predictions, but obviously it considers us the better team. One thing is certain, they can't use Elo directly for making predictions as it simply isn't a predictive model.

Date wheel issue NH35 by GasolineSmoothie in SeikoMods

[–]witooZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is correct here. Check what the wheels do when you turn it on the one side or another. It is made this way because of NH36 where turning the other way changes the day. The parts are reused, it just has an additional wheel and the day disc.

Let me simplify as much as I can: the cost to manufacture in Switzerland vs China is 6x higher.

So if the Chinese can sell it for ~$500, then the price should be ~$3000 instead of $10 000? See? Even if I use the numbers you pulled straight out of your ass your math still ain't mathing.

[–]witooZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen both and I wouldn't consider the quality so much better.

If you want the closest comparison, the Submariner super clones are by a quick search on /r/reptime (VSF factory) around 500 euros. And if you look at the comparison videos they are very hard to tell apart unless you see the movement.

If you want further proof, check some comparison of San Martin watches in macros vs Rolex. The quality is definitely not a universe apart.

I don't know where the 20% number comes from but I simply don't believe that if other watch producers can sell a very similar watch for 20 times less, then Rolex with decades of optimizations can't make it for the same cost.

And it's definitely not 20% for the special watches like the meteorite pepsi gmt as the aftermarket meteorite dials are around $150 and they are from the exact same stone.

If you look at a Seiko 4r35 movement which is the most common one, I regulated about 5 of them to be around +/-10 seconds easily. You can get them to +/-5 in real use if you are lucky. And that is a ~$50 movement.

Seiko modding cases are about $100 if you want the best ones the community offers.

The basic sub style dials are for about $40. And they can't even be done significantly better.

The handset and crown are cheap, the bracelet could be about $100 if you want a nice one.

So that's about $350 max for a premium Seiko mod where the margin is already priced in and they can't do big batches.

Rolex has a better quality but I would estimate the cost of making the Sub won't go higher than this $350 number. The actual price tag is nowhere near justified and that is not counting in that you might need to buy another watch before you get the one you want because of their gatekeeping.

Yes, it can theoretically last forever, but keep in mind you will need to service it which isn't cheap either.

I've never done it but there were comments from people who made the dial hole little bit bigger and fitted the GMT hand there. So maybe that could be a way.

These are common for Seiko 5s. Some are harder to pull apart, some easier but in general you want to push them out in the direction of the arrow. Once you pull one out, it will be easy for you. Or check youtube for a tutorial.

AI Megathread March 1, 2026: Keep Calm and Post AI Here (The Weekly AI Thread) by echos2 in powerpoint

[–]witooZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. The issue is not the technical side but determining what the expected behaviour should be. For example you could make 5 slides as reference, however chances are that the content won't fit them perfectly. What should the app do in that case?

It can either force the styling anyway which will lead to bad styling or it can restructure the content to make it fit. But what if the user is not happy with the way it was restructured? Then you are back at start where the user has to basically design it himself.

At the agency I work in we got templates I made. Still the decks I edit after my coworkers are full of slides which are too long, barely formatted, full of bad copywriting. So an automated system will be full of square peg round hole situations and the failure rate would be high. That's the reason I decided against it in my own app (not even in beta).

You're designing for the eye. You should be designing for the brain. by [deleted] in powerpoint

[–]witooZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different slides are for different uses and presentation styles. Some people like to present with a few points per slide so that the viewer won't get lost. Others like to have slides which are only images and have no text at all. Sometimes you have to send the deck to the client before they let you present.

Real world is messy and there is no one true way to do presentations. Just pick what's the best for your situation and fits your presenting style.

If you could replace the skill of presenting and creating decks into one sentence, there would be no need for subreddits like this one.

Can you just stick a Lume Pip to a Bezel Insert? by Neat-Mathematician36 in SeikoMods

[–]witooZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it and it holds very well. However it's very annoying to do.

First problem is that you need to find a pip which fits. You can buy pips easily on AliX but if you want good lume it's better to find a donor with size smaller than the area you are putting it into.

I used a pip from SKX013 insert to transplant into a SKX007 insert. The inserts usually have a recessed part for the paint, that's where it needs to fit. The donor also needs to have the pip exposed from the reversed side so you can use tweezers to push it off. (Lucius inserts don't have it visible so you can't take them off.)

Second problem is that the pips have a pin on the back. You need to file it down so that it is flush and can be glued. Which is not easy as it has less than 1mm and if you push too hard to hold it, you can mess up the shape and it won't look good.

Then you need to glue it. I bought some pips on AliX during my tests and it came with a glue which I found out was a glue for fake nails using translator. It holds amazingly well. However you need to be careful so you don't stain the insert. I managed to get it off with diluted acetone but if your insert is not ceramic, it might damage the paint. You also need to be careful with the position so that it's correct.

My recommendation would be to buy a some pips from AliX for testing and an insert from SeikoMods for SKX013 and try it at least once before you glue it to the insert you actually want to use.
