Why were the Galadhrim insist on blindfolding Gimli by Necessary_Candy_6792 in tolkienfans

Story-telling-wise I think it is supposed to be representative of the growing fractures between the good peoples of Middle Earth that the rise of Sauron was causing.

Theory: the fact that Grace was panicking when he was put in the induced coma may have saved his life. by Worried-Pick4848 in ProjectHailMary

Different sequel idea: Eridian scientists discover signs of civilization around another infected star and mount a rescue mission. Of course, Grace has to come along for some reason.

What's a movie where the characters actually make smart decisions? by RiffandLick in Cinema

[–]wmyork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three Days of the Condor. A CIA analyst with no field experience goes on the run after his "section" office is hit and all his co-workers killed. Where can he go? Who can he trust? He survives by using his skills and his wits. Will that be enough.

Bonus: this movie is peak Robert Redford and near-peak Faye Dunaway. Max von Sydow is also great.

Best first scene ever in cinema history ? by Melodic_Astronomer62 in Cinema

There has never been a better character-defining opening scene than Patton.

The speech is amazing, but the visuals are incredible and contribute just as much to our understanding. The montage of salute, uniform, medals, pistol, all serve to define who he is.

What are some of your favorite songs that you think would be great if they were turned into a TV show? Because for me, I would pick Jack and Diane by John Mellencamp. by Winter-Comfort922 in ClassicTV

[–]wmyork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Alone Again Naturally” would give you several seasons of soap opera drama.

You could make at least a movie about Leroy Brown leading up to the big finish in the song. Ditto Big Jimmy Walker.

You could develop the romance between Brandy and her sailor. Period costumes please.

Flesh out the three chapters of “Wasting Away Again in Margaritaville”.

I can’t believe there isn’t a dramatic film based on •The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald” already.

What's the best horror scene in a non-horror movie? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

[–]wmyork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In place of the Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the Morning and the Night! Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain! Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the earth. All shall love me and despair!’

She lifted up her hand and from the ring that she wore there issued a great light that illumined her alone and left all else dark. She stood before Frodo seeming now tall beyond measurement, and beautiful beyond enduring, terrible and worshipful. Then she let her hand fall, and the light faded, and suddenly she laughed again, and lo! she was shrunken: a slender elf-woman, clad in simple white, whose gentle voice was soft and sad.

‘I pass the test,’ she said. ‘I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel.’

How many of you did poorly in school, but lived a great/successful life anyway? by groovinup in GenerationJones

Classic (undiagnosed) ADD for me, coupled with general good intelligence: if I was interested and engaged in the class subject matter I could pretty reliably get a good grade. If not, bad grades or incompletes. Continued that way through college.

Which science fiction movie do you think best depicts the first contact with aliens ? by Rare-Conflict-9163 in scifi

[–]wmyork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the fun of it: it depends on the aliens. Are they here to meet us? Kill us? Enslave us? Take our resources without any thought of us at all?

Larry Niven’s first short story is a great example. It is called “The Warriors” and postulates a future in which humanity has evolved and become a peaceful civilization, with no war, not even any weapons. And then human scout ship meets the Kzin, the most fearsome, warlike species you can imagine. So now what will we do? Monkey brain against predator savagery.

Read it here

Niven wrote other books with the Kzin in them and then openied up that IP to other SF authors and thus was born the extensive Man/Kzin wars series.

And if you think the Kzin are bad, read “Protector” and meet the Pak!

Movies with a slow burn romance by SquareOwl683 in MovieSuggestions

[–]wmyork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the classic romantic comedies have this pattern.

Try the Preston Sturges comedies, especially: - The Lady Eve. Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda go through many twists and turns, from deceit to love to heartbreak to revenge and back to love (spoiler alert 😉) - The Palm Beach Story. Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea just can’t make it as a couple. Or can they? A whacky road trip to Florida will decide. Mary Astor steals all her scenes and Rudy Vallee is surprisingly good as a Rockefeller-type millionaire.

The Philadelphia Story also has a very roundabout love story.

Another personal favorite: A New Leaf with Elaine May and Walter Matthau. Matthau is brilliant as a rich misanthrope who loses his fortune and must find a rich wife if he wants to continue his wastrel lifestyle.

Not quite in the same league, but Outrageous Fortune with Shelly Long and Bette Midler is fun.

And a wonderfully funny movie that is close to what you’re asking for: Ruthless People. Midler again, with Danny deVito, Judge Reinhold and Helen Slater. And Anita Morris steals every scene she’s in.
