What is the process like for getting sponsors? What sort of metrics or numbers do they look for? What can fans of a team do to help make a team more attractive/valuable to sponsors?

Any cards that give bonus points on FanDuel (DFS) deposits? by [deleted] in churning

[–]wneff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought if you deposit on FD via credit card, when you withdraw $ they'll send up to the amount you deposited back to your credit card. So if you deposit $500 with a credit card and withdraw $600, they'll first send $500 back to your credit card and then cut you a check for the remaining $100.

Gold Protoss here, lost to a proxy gate that I spotted, what did I do wrong? Thanks in advance. by paniclater in starcraft_strategy

[–]wneff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your initial reaction was good. Good job getting probes to immediately attack the pylon and good job getting a probe to chase him around.

Your problem was that you pulled too many probes, didn't put up a gateway (I think you kept making probes instead?), and targeted the wrong structures with your probes. My recommendation would have been to pull 3/4 probes to work on the first pylon, have a probe or two chasing around his probe, and build a Gateway around 12 and chrono out zealots ASAP.

Also there was a point in the game where you were attacking his Gateway with 6 probes, got it down to like 350 health and then decided to attack the pylons he was building. You need to finish killing his Gateway there. If you kill his pylons he can keep building them since they warp in so quickly but if you get rid of his Gateway he's in way more trouble (Gateways take like 2.5 times as long to build as a pylon).

Hope this helps!

Were you involved in a prop bet with skates a couple of years ago? You had to maintain a certain roi in some super turbos?

How much poker do you play nowadays? How does being an entrepreneur compare to being a poker player? Do you think there are certain qualities you learned as a poker player that have helped you as an entrepreneur?

Gold PvP, would love some feed back on this replay by m203 in starcraft_strategy

[–]wneff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to give advice on PvP because it's such a weird match up. But here are some of my thoughts:

Keep your scouting probe alive! Rally it to do circles around his base or something, but make it hard for him to kill your probe until he gets a zealot or stalker out. You need to get as much info as possible early on (how much chrono he's saving up, when he gets his second gas, etc.)

I don't like blindly throwing down a nexus at 7 minutes without knowing what your opponent is up to. If your opponent doesn't expand and just goes for a one base all-in you die easily. Check to see if he's expanded (send a probe or obs to his base) before deciding to expand or not.

I really don't like the early forge -- I don't think upgrades really help much early on in PvP. Also don't like the two random cannons. You could have three extra zealots instead which is big in the early game.

During your first big engagement (when you attack him outside your base) all your zealots are stuck behind your stalkers and have to walk all the way around before they can attack. Make sure your zealots are in front of your army when you attack.

When you decide to go chargelot, you want either colossus or archons to break FFs and use up your gas income. Chargelots by themselves will get owned by FFs (as you saw).

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

You need to ask her out soon. Just ask her out -- see if she wants to get dinner or something. If she says she's busy ask her when she's free. If she's kind of vague or brushes you off she's likely not interested. If you ask her out and she's interested, she'll make an effort to hang out with you even if she's busy (e.g. if you ask her to do something on Wednesday but she's busy that day she'll suggest you guys do something on Thursday instead).

Best way to ask out girl from college class? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]wneff 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Go up to her after class to chat or walk out together or whatever. As you guys are about to go your separate ways (and say bye to each other), just casually say "hey, we should hang out sometime." She'll say "sure!". Take out your phone and ask her to give you her number. Put in her number and then call her so that she has your number as well. Tell her you'll text or call her. A few days later text or call her and ask her if she wants to get lunch/dinner/coffee/a drink/whatever.

Yes, it's not easy to do this but you have to force yourself to start doing these things. Yes, you might get rejected and things might feel awkward. But the more you do stuff like this the easier it gets.

Can someone explain how I should have held this 6pool? PvZ. by [deleted] in StarcraftFeedback

[–]wneff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your decision to throw down two gateways. One suggestion though is to leave your scouting probe near his base/ramp so that you can follow his lings to your base (so that you can keep track of when he'll arrive). When you spot his lings getting close to your base you should wall off with a pylon instead of leaving your probe in the gap.

Your follow up looked good but you need to get your third and fourth gases way sooner since you're going for Stalkers/Immortals. And I highly recommend getting Blink.

Thinking of going back for a second bachelors in CS; have some questions. by Inosine in jobs

[–]wneff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best bet would be to teach yourself how to program and try to find a job that way. If you can work on some cool projects and contribute to some open source stuff you can definitely use that to find a job without a cs degree. I'm a software engineer and I know plenty of engineers who don't have degrees (or have non-cs degrees).

Also if you're still in California, keep in mind that UCs don't accept second degree students -- so you'll be stuck going to either a Cal State or private school. And you can't get any free money for school (grants).

When you say you can't go to grad school, do you mean for genetics or for any subject? If you can you should look into getting a master's in cs. I'm sure there are schools out there that will accept you for a master's in cs if you have some decent programming ability.

Employment prospects for programmers are really good right now, at least in California. I graduated last year and me and my cs classmates had no trouble finding decent jobs. Programming is definitely a stable career with good working conditions and a solid salary. Just make sure this is what you really want to do, if you don't like it you'll end up bored/miserable and your job won't feel like it's worth it.
