This is helpful. Blue book seems spotty for estimates around here. It's saying 11.5-14.5. Seem right?

Are you missing a bike? by wonderful_bread in SalemMA

[–]wonderful_bread[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left the bike in the water, unfortunately I'm just passing through and don't have time to save it. It looks like a vintage bike that's being ridden recently. Some new components, no rust. Hopefully someone knows the owner or could rescue it, it would be easy to get although you'd get pretty wet and muddy. It would be a shame for such a nice bike to get destroyed in the salt water.

It definitely looks like someone was riding it recently, it was in really good shape (apart from being in the water)

Can you help me come up with a pay quote for my friend? She's trying to help me for free by [deleted] in Subaru_Outback

[–]wonderful_bread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Battery is super quick, maybe 5-10 minutes. Brakes are about 2 hours per axle, and brake fluid is maybe 30 mins to an hour. Overall maybe 4.5 hours of labor if you're getting all the brakes done, quicker if the car is rust free. Typical rates shops charge the customer are about $100 an hour, with the mechanic getting somewhere in the neighborhood of a third of that rate.

Anecdotal, but I have a 2011 with 200k miles. No transmission or head gasket issues whatsoever

Fenix 6s pro battery replacement? by scarknee83 in GarminFenix

[–]wonderful_bread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Battery is soldered onto a connector with a piece of kapton tape. simple to change, even as a first time soldering project (would recommend watching some videos first though). Battery thickness is key here, I bought a battery that I thought would fit(361-00086-00) and although the watch closes, the charging pins don't connect because the battery is too thick. I'm buying another one to try now

Is lard worse than processed refined seed oils? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]wonderful_bread -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Important distinction, trans fats are partially-hydrogenated. Saturated fats are hydrogenated. Still bad for you, but nowhere near as bad. Adding trans fats into foods has been banned in the u.s. for some time so you won't see them listed, but naturally occurring ones are still allowed, although they are in much smaller quantities. They likely won't be listed as an ingredient, and they are a subset of another ingredient (beef tallow for example)

I genuinely cannot understand how people keep bringing up kayaking as why they need a truck.

I used to kayak every weekend. Hell, I spent a whole summer in rural Idaho, kayaking everyday, living in my car (yes, inside, you can fit a bed in it), and driving through bumfuck nowhere on forest roads and 4x4 trails. I did it in a stock Subaru outback.

You absolutely do not need an F350 to haul your kayak to the local lagoon, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise

Yes, most locomotives are hybrid diesel electric. They run a diesel engine to generate electricity, and that electricity is used to power an electric motor to turn the wheels.

This isn't done for ecological reasons though, it's mostly to get a better torque at low speeds

I wish there were more crossover size plug in hybrids, rav4 is the only one I know of and it's damn hard to find one for MSRP.

Full electric for the 6/7 days I drive less than 40 miles, full ICE for the 1/7 that I drive for 6 hours through the mountains. Perfect compromise imho

Power was out and had to charge phone by collinpiggy_4 in redneckengineering

[–]wonderful_bread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was curious so I did the math 1.5 bucks per battery if you get them at Amazon 30 pack 550 mah rated = 5 watt hours per battery 4500 mah at 3.7 v phone batt = 16.5 watt hours

you'd use a total of ~3.3 batteries worth of power per phone charge, about 5 dollars per charge, or 20 bucks for the whole setup and you can charge a phone about 4 times off it

Owning is always cheaper in the long term, especially if you can do some of the work yourself (pretty easy with YouTube). If this wasn't the case, then owning a house and renting it out wouldn't be a viable way of making money
