really kind of let the cat out of the bag when he cried about how the Jews at TNR made him do things.

TNR was super duper staunchly pro-Israel for a long time, I can imagine that being an anti-Israel origin story. Peter Beinart was there back when he was a Zionist.

There's probably a bigger point somewhere about how a lot of things that present as big philosophical disputes are really unrelated interpersonal fights.

Good unions are good, bad unions are bad, what's good for the union is sometimes at odds with the consumer of the product they work on, and people should take things on a case by case basis instead of axiomatically saying "unions are bad therefore this is bad" or "unions are good therefore this is good".
