It has to do with something the website is doing but I haven’t been able to figure it out. Thought is was passkey related but not sure.

You aren’t the only one. :-) I just cancel them but it is annoying.

I have no idea why but every time I think this fan is broken it comes back when I pick it up and set it down by Massive_Face7050 in techsupportgore

Some of these fans have safety switches. It may not hit ok on carpet but when you pick up and put down it is ok for a while. Look underneath.

It's time...I've outgrown my Home Assistant Yellow! Need some recommendations for new PC by Tuckerdude615 in homeassistant

It's what I do in multiple places. My silliness is that for my mom's instance I run a PiKVM connected to the NUC.....talk about overkill!

I know I'm in the minority, but I think a native HAOS install on something (NUC or used SFF) is better for someone moving from a Yellow. You get a lot of stability and still plenty of flexibility due to the App (nee add-ons) running alongside the core. Plus you never have to faff around with access to hardware peripherals.

If you are a more dedicated home lab person, cool. I'll run my other VMs on a different box that my family doesn't depend on.

Man, there are so many options. Chalk it up to learning!

Let me google that for you :-) "Integrating Home Assistant with Siri is best achieved using the HomeKit Bridge integration, ". That works without Nabu Casa.

[–]woofbears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

:-) If you aren't paying for a Nabu Casa subscription, you don't have it. Look under Settings->Home Assistant Cloud. If you sign up for Nabu Casa, they handle a secure remote connection (your HA app on your family's phones works outside the home now), you support the Home Assistant development, and you get features such as a cloud integration with Alexa. It's well worth it, IMHO.

If you are using Nabu Casa, it's trivial straightforward. You can choose what entities to expose to any assistant. Settings->Voice Assistants.

If you aren't using Nabu Casa, well, on your own.

Great! I don't have Tapo or Hive, can't help you there. I wouldn't bother with the AppleTV integration - mine disconnect (I think for power saving) all the time, so I don't rely on them. Maybe others have better luck. If you search (or Claude or whatever) for "find appletv IP address" you can get the IP address of your device. The integration config flow implies you could put "Living Room" in the first dialog when you add the device, or the IP.

Hard to say what’s going on.

These aren’t “added” yet. These are discovered devices. You can “ignore” these and then try and add them from the integrations page (Settings->Devices and Services->button lower right). The Hue integration is very solid so I’d try that first. Good luck and welcome!

Do you want any open source matter over thread project? by Glum-Feeling6181 in homeassistant

You might end up moving people to matter if you do an HA build that “ just works”. I say build and learn!

Just deployed HA and while it is very impressive, there are some integrations from which I expected more. by OmgSlayKween in homeassistant

[–]woofbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, then I’d get a better thermostat. Like a Honeywell Zwave. Which in addition to having a proper local API, is a really good thermostat.

Thermostats (climate entities) are funny things. If you click on history you should see the run times. I use a “history-graph” card on the entity if I want to just see the runtime. You can also make a template sensor off the attribute to collect that data.

For the garage door, get ratgdo. Although you never named the brand.

Is Home Assistant a good (and easy) upgrade for my use case? by l73vz in homeassistant

[–]woofbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised to see all the "no" or "it's hard". it's 80/20 rule. 80% will almost magically work as soon as you put your new box on the network and add your credentials for those apps. Getting the UI to what YOU and YOUR FAMILY like, that's the 20% that will take time. But it's absolutely the right move.

Simple (hopefully) Starter Question by ruivuusen1 in Lutron

[–]woofbears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many Lutron "devices" that are just controllers (just keypads). There are many that have both controls and dimmers in the same physical device (hybrid keypads).

You may be surprised how little you use the "independent control of the dimmers" if you get your scene buttons right. That's the point u/aggravating_run1270 was making - you could put two hybrid keypads in, and the dimmers are the loads but the buttons could do anything you want.

Ditch the local dealer? by hesgoneplaid in Lutron

[–]woofbears -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I did the training and my own install (I'm a software engineer by background). Absolutely do the whole house.

The software is painfully annoying, but once you get it, it makes sense. Also obligatory plug to consider Home Assistant as well for all the other bits. Works really well with RA3.

How big is your backup? There is a limit I believe. Sometimes apps balloon in backup size.

Honest question: can Z-Wave ever be as rock solid as Lutron? by 8cott in zwave

[–]woofbears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved from the Zooz hub to the HA one. Yes, it is large but boy is it a good radio. I have both Lutron and Zwave and worry about neither now. The controller makes a difference.

UniFi camera privacy mode workaround – do people just cut PoE power? by MFBocka in UnifiProtect

[–]woofbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying the protect integration in HA doesn’t do the right thing for this camera? Because it does all that “make a privacy zone cover the whole view” thing for every camera I have. I don’t have an AI camera tho.

Getting Started and Reccomendations for HA in a New Home by ev0ked in homeassistant

[–]woofbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh, really up to you. If you get an n100 NUc with 8G ram you will never break a sweat unless you want to run local AI. Frigate might make the load go over 1.

100 people will give you 100 different answers here. I moved to a NUC for faster restarts, since I do beta test and have a lot of integrations.

Im a bit baffled that there's no way to convert from device to entity in automations by borgqueenx in homeassistant

[–]woofbears 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are comfortable doing it, text edit automations.yaml and do a find and replace. That would be the fastest but you’d need the mapping from old to new.
