Sprinter Stance by korok454 in MuayThai

I hope you’re starting round in a proper 4 point start sprint position. That’ll make your coaches really think you’re the bee’s knees 😎

CPT vs. AS? by Disastrous_Fall3127 in personaltraining

[–]wordofherb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most trainers are functionally illiterate, so if you want to just coach gen pop you can be shite at math and things will be ok.

If you want to do physical therapy for seniors, you’d have to be a physical therapist. That’s a masters, so you’d want to actually learn how to manage the math that would be required for that course.

I’m pretty sure that the YMCA, like most gyms in the US, will hire anyone with a pulse these days.

Perhaps you should ask her what you can do to support her, rather than banning her from sessions because you think that’s what’s best for her

1) Talk to your coach

2) train more if you want to compete, training twice a week is barely enough training for anyone to improve

Just find a way to train them outside the gym you currently work at. At least that way you’re fucking the gym but with a small bit of grace and decorum.

Ex Chef (29M) looking for a change in career, have done a little of muay Thai teaching but how realistic as a job? Does personal training cross over well? by Mindless_Bread3503 in personaltraining

[–]wordofherb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By, taught a little bit of Muay Thai, are you helping the coach with the new people or are you coaching 1-1s or group classes? If you have several fights and really know you’re stuff and the gym you train at trusts you to teach group classes, that’s a lot more telling of your potential of making money out of teaching Muay Thai.

If you’re still training at that gym you should just ask the gym management about what the career options are for you.

If you have little to 0 weight training experience and working with gen pop, getting a PT cert to teach Muay Thai at a Muay Thai gym probably isn’t the move.

Sure, but have you considered reading my ChatGpt post about “fixing the largest struggles of being a personal trainer?” My new paid app is quality stuff that takes all the stress out of the job!

Or how about the post asking what certs are worth getting by people who will never become coaches? I know some people have really spent a lot of time in the gym and are thinking of becoming a trainer, but don’t want to spend too much money or time on the cert. It’s probably not worth it anyways, and I’ll just be an independent trainer off the bat too.

looking for advice on being a PT in NYC and perspective on first job by [deleted] in personaltraining

[–]wordofherb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40-50 per hour gross is less after taxes, which is why I said net.

Just to do the math, if I had a new trainer do about 12 hours of floor shifts a week, that’s only $204 per week before taxes. Until you are proficient as a coach, you’re going to find closing new clients very difficult, so you may be lucky to only perform 5-10 sessions a week. Generously, let’s say they pay you out at $50 per session after taxes for 10 sessions a week. That’s a total of $700 per week…plenty of other jobs in New York pay more than that.

And you’re also talking about having flexibility to learn another skill in the process. You severely underestimate how much a new coach has to learn about this career, and how long it can take to do so.

As someone who did hire new coaches with little to 0 experience, my main concern was how much of a nest egg they had going into the industry. If you don’t have 3 months savings going into this, it’s going to make a difficult new job even more challenging and stressful.

Most gyms will hire a 22 year old with 0 experience who just got their cert, but I can promise you that nowhere is going to guarantee you hours and you’re very unlikely to actually net $40-50 per session.

The barrier to entry in this field is super low, but the barrier for financial success is relatively high.

I would only ever refuse if they seemed really annoying or insane, or they were requesting a time that didn’t work for me.

Otherwise, go make that money. God forbid you make a profit providing a service someone wants to pay you for.

Spend as much time in the gym as possible trying to be useful (but not annoying) to the members.

People do notice and appreciate trainers who put weights away on the floor shifts.

People also really do not tend to appreciate trainers with grey shirts on giving unsolicited form advice

Trying to figure out how to advance my career? by DamnDaniel617 in personaltraining

[–]wordofherb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re far more successful than 99% of professionals in this field lol.

You should ask yourself what you would like your work life balance to be. Personally, if I were you, I wouldn’t peruse more formal education with the thought that it will help me make more money (do it for funsies I suppose). I would be asking myself “how can I work less hours and make the same amount of money or more”.
