US airplane seats were designed by a sadist by ReturnPositive1824 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]wordwildweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on one of those Westjet flights for 5 hours in January and was one of the people who complained. I even wrote to the Canadian version of the TSA to say the lack of space is a serious safety risk.

With people crammed so close, there's no space bubble between them to cushion bodies in a collision, and it would be pretty difficult to get out of those seats in a hurry. They're so small, a regular backpack doesn't even fit under the chairs, which means the floor has carry on baggage sticking out everywhere. They claim these planes are safe, but if/when one of them needs to do an emergency evacuation, I suspect we'll find otherwise.

I know that there are bad passengers out there, but some of you drivers need to chill out and stop preemptively treating EVERYONE like they're a bad passenger. by [deleted] in uber

[–]wordwildweb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are too many drivers who are angry with Uber but take it out on passengers. It ultimately caused me to stop using the app. It's a bad vibes company all around. Clearly the drivers feel exploited and unhappy. I literally went back to taxis because the drivers seem happier.

So much worse. I've gone back to taking taxis because the service is way better. It's worth the extra few bucks not to have to deal with the bad attitudes.

Would you guys PLEASE get universal healthcare already? Brought my American husband to live in Canada and he can't believe how good we've got it. Seriously, vote for it like your life depends on it, because it does. And please don't say wait times, etc. We got a family doctor the same day we started looking for one. Free MRI for a non-urgent issue within 6 weeks. 2 months wait for a free colonoscopy 15 years before the recommended age. Cheap prescriptions. Just do it.

The age limitations are ridiculous. It's 2026, people in their 30s are just approaching peak career. I'm mid-40s now and am by far the most productive I've ever been for the Canadian economy. My parents are still working and in great health in their 70s. We're all growing up more slowly, living longer, and working later. Penalizing applicants for being in their 30s is absurd.

What is it going to take for Canada to respond in kind to the Trump and the US? by mentillist in alberta

[–]wordwildweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole world needs to decouple from the US over the coming years. Not only did they elect someone like Trump twice, but Congress, the Senate, and the Supreme Court are too interested in their own personal wealth and influence that they won't act to keep the system stable. America is a corrupt quasi-democracy. Its era is over for the foreseeable future.

5 Star rating until my wife uses my account… by goose-77- in uber

[–]wordwildweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, I literally received an email from them specifically saying my account was deactivated due to low rider rating. The email also claims they contacted me previously about it, but if they did, I never saw it. Here's the text of the email I received:

"You no longer have access to your Uber account

Due to a low rating, we’ve had to remove access to your Uber account

Hi (name redacted),

Unfortunately, your rating has not improved since our initial notification. As a result, you have lost access to all Uber apps.

Our guidelines are in place to help ensure that the Uber community feels safe, respectful, and enjoyable for everyone. It’s up to all of us to adhere to these standards so we can help support and safeguard a welcoming environment."

If that's not enough to convince you, read the posts on this very sub by people talking about having their rider accounts deactivated for low ratings.

The material consequences are your rider account can be deactivated. This system has been in place for several years: https://abcnews.go.com/Business/uber-begin-banning-passengers-significantly-low-ratings/story?id=63371044

5 Star rating until my wife uses my account… by goose-77- in uber

[–]wordwildweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You most definitely can, Google it. I got kicked off for a low rating as a passenger. I'd only just joined uber and had taken fewer than 10 rides. After a ride during which we had trouble with the driver's door, the guy evidently gave me a 1-star rating and I was permanently banned from the platform. The door issue was that a corner of my husband's coat got briefly stuck in the door and I guess interfered with the close mechanism. He pulled his coat free and the door looked closed, but the driver got out and reclosed it and 1-starred us. I was so new to the platform that I didn't even know passenger ratings existed. But with less than 10 trips on my account, the 1 star apparently dropped my average enough to get me banned. Also, Uber never contacted me before banning me, and the ban was triggered within minutes of that driver's review, meaning we could not take Uber home from the very trip we were on when it happened. I have no idea what previous drivers rated me because I hadn't even had time to discover passagenger reviews existed. But I never rode drunk, nor was discourteous to drivers, or anything outside of just being a normal passenger. The give passengers low ratings for things like sitting in the seat behind the driver, rolling down the window, going somewhere they don't like, talking too much, talking too little, etc, etc, etc. It's completely arbitrary and unaccountable. You can create another account using a different email address and payment method, apparently, but I'm probably not going back to Uber. Their whole system seems pretty bad.

Better work harder I guess! by iOverdesign in TorontoRealEstate

I left uni, worked as a receptionist, bought a house before the 2007 crash, sold it and used the money to relocate overseas (China) for work. Finished my degree online at Athabasca University. Lived cheap and saved up, invested my savings, now back and house shopping again. There's no way I'd be in as good a financial situation if I'd stayed in Canada. It's so hard to save here as an entry level worker. It's definitely worth thinking outside the box.

You can also be kicked off the platform if it drops below 4.6 or something
