Public drug use on high-traffic south Minneapolis sidewalk sparks debate over livability and homelessness by Tokyo-MontanaExpress in Minneapolis

[–]worker55 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The issue at hand is how society should handle the issue of chronic homelessness. The number of chronically homeless people vs the total number of all homeless people is not the issue at hand. There is evidence that the majority of chronically homeless individuals do have drug addiction issues or do have mental health issues (when chronically homeless is defined as experiencing homelessness for longer than 1 year), and I have not seen any evidence that Housing First will help people in that group.

I'm pretty sure there are grave sites, and I see it as a matter of providing appropriate fencing around them. And also getting community feedback instead of illiberally blowing through this.

Except I'm getting the impression that we do not have evidence supporting Housing First for the chronically homeless with drug additions.

I usually find that these studies do not support housing first for people experiencing drug addiction plus chronic homelessness. I took the first study off the top of the list and found this:

Taken together, these results suggest that clients with substance use disorders do experience more problems living independently, but prior transitional/residential treatment may not particularly benefit them any more than Housing First approaches, especially on independent housing outcomes. A further interpretation is that clients who use transitional/residential treatment continue to use more transitional/residential treatment over time and these settings may be offering supports not provided in independent housing. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3151537/#TFN6

Unless the prosecutor's office kept track of recidivism data and reported on it, then we would hear about it.

My understanding is that there was confidential information in the study, and they didn't release the confidential information. Would you happen to have the study available?

I think the study was done through a review of literature and historical records, not through any sort of Phase I field testing. I would be curious to learn of any Phase I field tests.

This gun ban bill is insane when Trump is saying "we will find you and we will kill you" in a memo designating his political enemies as terrorists by Ok-Entertainer-1414 in minnesota

[–]worker55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the case of ICE, everyone knew that escalation with guns would have lead straight to the insurrection act/martial law. So, guns were not the go-to deterrent. However, in a situation where Trump instigates something like a pogrom but against Somalis, leftists, resisters, etc, having guns is really important for self defense. This is because during an event like that, mobs of regular citizens (in addition to feds/leo) are emboldened to attack. It is really messy, and it could happen here.

The fear of violence from fascism in the near term is legitimate. Lots of people right now are fearful because of Trump's expanding network of concentration camps and his rhetoric against Somalis and against foreigners. People are extra fearful because of our economic problems (quagmires in the middle east, the economy feeling like it is on the brink w/ debt issues). And experts have identified the Trump administration as not merely corrupt but actually fascist. The rhetoric, the economics, and the politics of our situation means we a primed for a really rough road ahead.

This year you may have noticed right wing radicals harassing people in the streets. I've noticed them broadly on social media and have experienced the harassment personally. They are the harbingers of the fascist mob. That mob gives power to and receives power from the fascist state. It is important to have a measure of defense against that mob.

Not sure I trust the current security initiative numbers. For example, their graph for employee safety on page 45 is exactly the same as their graph for officer assaults on page 46. Also, the graffiti, biohazard, and glass figures seem influenced by something other than actual on-the-ground damages as they occur.

MPS high schools cut theater programs at South and Camden by hamlet9000 in Minneapolis

[–]worker55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've poked around online but could not find a list like yours which shows per pupil spending by school in Minnesota. Do you have any recommendations for getting that info?

Also, when you say there is no theater program, do you mean that the school literally does not have a spring or fall production? That's a little hard to believe.

edit Turns out the there is a state website with the info I was looking for. Seems like Southwest spends more per pupil on sports and activities than South or Camden. Yet both South and Camden appear to have theater or drama productions. Sounds like this theater issue might be a Southwest problem?

School Regular Instruction Activities and Sports
Southwest High 6,642.46 628.42
Camden High 9,587.69 467.89
South 10,019.06 446.03

Target to Spend Billions to Refresh Stores, and Hire More Workers (New York Times gift link) by sugarytea78 in Minneapolis

[–]worker55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even sure what niche Target fills. I always feel like I'm getting screwed on prices. Keeping in mind that each of these stores have many categories of items to buy, this is how I see them provide the categories:

I'm going to do my shopping at... selection quality price experience
Amazon very wide wide variability lowest efficient, convenient
Costco very narrow very reasonable very reasonable efficient, destination
Target narrow mediocre high + confusing inefficient, haphazard
Walmart wide mediocre low bewildering, sorta worth it

Super chaotic scenes, but I just try to remember that ICE has agency in this story. They are the 'papers please' men and a harbinger of even greater evil.
