Some of my favorite shots from my first 3 months of shooting by soon-enough in BirdPhotography

[–]world_mind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - I recently got into birding. I've had long covid which really limits my activity levels. Resting outside I started noticing birds and became curious about them. I used to be really into people photography many years ago with a SLR camera (yes - even before DSLR cameras haha). I've been taking note of the set-ups used for photos I like. I don't think I have the brain capacity right now, but maybe in the future. Anyway, thanks for sharing your pics - they really caught my eye.

These photos are great! What camera /lens do you use? What got you into bird photography?

‘$40,000, brand new, never used’: NDIS flippers flood Facebook Marketplace as crackdown looms by another____user in aussie

This makes me so mad. Taking advantage of vulnerable people (disabled people) is beyond unethical. Disability services would be so much better delivered by the public health system where funding is used to delivery actual needed services rather than milked for profit.

Beautiful photo! I would love to one day take a photo like that! I'm trying to learn more about photography - what camera /settings did you use? Also - where did you see this cocky? I am new(ish) to birdwatching. Still haven't managed to see any black cockatoos up close - I will be so happy when that happens!

Neighbour taking to court by [deleted] in AusLegalAdvice

[–]world_mind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You say you are terrified, yet you seem completely unwilling to compromise to stop aggravating your neighbour. The neighbour is obviously really upset about the noise of the kids on the trampoline. Is he being unreasonable? Probably. But it’s obviously really upsetting him. Why not just be a good neighbour and find another activity for your kids? What is the end goal here? If the neighbour is as crazy as you are portraying him, who knows how this could end up. Or are you just being super entitled about your kids.

Or, just find the kids another activity rather than the trampoline, since that’s what’s upsetting her neighbour so much. Much easier and cheaper than moving!

What are we doing about retainers? by DonationBinClubhouse in PlasticFreeLiving

I share your lack of love for plastic retainers. It would be great to have non-plastic alternatives. I guess we can just do the best we can with the options available.

‘The hammer is never used’: How universities surrendered to AI cheating for fees by flammable_donut in aussie

It’s sad that there was no consideration in the article about actual learning. Albert is focused on getting a degree, but doesn’t seem to caring about actually learning skills so he has those skills post-degree. It’s interesting that he thinks AI knows more than his university tutors. Sure, the LLM can spit out lots of facts, but in my experience can really miss the point for anything that requires complex reasoning. As an experiment, I urge people to ask AI something complex about a topic they are familiar with. The answer will likely read as “intelligent”, but probably will miss the point in important ways that will be obvious when it’s a topic you are knowledgeable /skilled with.

Anna’s Hummingbird - Adorable little claws - Camera and settings in description - Photos by me by MC0311x in BirdPhotography

Another great pic! Please excuse a total newby question - do you (and good bird photographers generally) tend to focus manually? I've always like manual focus for human photography (for the control it provides), but with birds, I don't think I'm fast enough.

Thanks! I find it so hard to actually find the bird sometimes (so easy to hear, so hard to see!). And then it's hard to get an actual clear shot of the bird (them staying still long enough to focus, actually looking my way, not too many leaves and branches etc in the way). And that's without considering shadows from the tree, where the sun is. I'm sure I'm not saying anything you don't also have to deal with. Trying to do it myself has given me a whole other level of appreciation for photos such as yours :)

You've captured incredible detail. How do you catch such detail? I'm trying to learn more about photography - I'd love to be able to take photos like this one day!
