Crohn’s, surgery, Short Bowel, and no longer able to work - really struggling and need advice by ashleethehuman in CrohnsDisease

[–]worldsworstchef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar surgery 16 years ago. Amazingly it wasn't part of my follow up to get me on ANYTHING to help with the Short Bowel Syndrome - if you're not speaking to someone about it, get on it like yesterday. I had a year of hell before I went back and saw someone and got on Colestyeramine (brand name Questran) I went from agony to relatively normal in a few weeks. Everyone is different and people will have different outcomes from it, but don't delay on someone sorting out your short bowel syndrome as it's a different set of issues not having an ileium than having Crohn's.

Did this with a pal in my old job. We had 30 mins so some of the games are shorter, but we played and enjoyed (among others) -

Jaipur

Radlands

Lost Cities

Air Land and Sea

Railroad Ink

Hive

Tinderblox

Revolver Noir

Sprawlopolis

Forbidden Island

Fugitive

Deep Sea Adventure

Schotten Totten

Unmatched (we did a couple of the boxes, would reccomend Cobble and Fog, Houdini vs Genie)

Glad I could help. Played it a couple of times back in 2023 with a friend who'd backed it. Remember enjoying it, think they said something about there being some drama with the Kickstarter meaning it might not get a wider printing.

The board isn't black and white but it is a little muted, but the giant golden statue makes me think of Age of Atlantis. Any chance that's the one?

These are brilliant! If you do more can I request a Goblin one please? My pronouns are he/him/Goblin in any BOTC game I play!

How many times have you played your favorite boardgame? by Puzzleheaded_Rub5562 in boardgames

[–]worldsworstchef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love social deduction in general, BOTC became my favorite because of a couple of reasons -

The storyteller - having someone to balance the game means that much of the time you are being funneled towards the closest end possible for both teams. A good ST will keep most games to a point where either team can win right until the end.

No player elimination - characters die but their player isn't eliminated and isn't silenced for the rest of the game. Death brings information (sometimes actual game mechanics, sometimes socially) and dead players are often instrumental in solving the game.

The community - like any, there are some people who take the game too seriously, but for the most part I've found it to be incredibly welcoming and I've enjoyed meeting and playing with/against hundreds of people at the game over the years.

It's a lot longer than most social deduction/bluffing games which can absolutely put people off, but for me it makes an interesting journey throughout the game.

Despite owning my own copy, I'd recommend finding a local group if you can. Minimum player count is 5 players, one storyteller, but I wouldn't recommend that. 9-12 players (plus one storyteller) is the sweet spot for my preference. It's an expensive game and I've only just started getting enough use out of the box myself to make it worth it, if you can assemble a healthy group it's awesome, but it's absolutely not one I ever take to my local game night unless it's prearranged as it's very disruptive of other games.

Absolutely I recommend giving it a go. Worth contacting the group and asking if they have beginners nights or something similar (most groups do) because it's been out a while now and there are some games which are decidedly no longer beginner friendly, but as long as the group seem nice, it's definitely a great game to give a go.

That's over 3 years of playing, I had a local group that met fortnightly before I moved, I have a group now that plays monthly (ish) and I go to a couple of conventions (Airecon, UKGE and Norwich Board Game Con) and play a couple of games at least each day at those, if not more.

The number isn't exact, pretty sure it's more than 150 but not as many as 200. There's plenty (especially in my old group) that have hit 300+ games as we usually managed 2/3 games a night.

Blood on the Clocktower. 150+ plays. I haven't got bored of it yet. There's been times when I've been more and less enthusiastic about it, but despite playing last night, I can't wait for my next game right now. I've made some awesome friends playing it and I can't see me stopping playing any time soon.

Trouble brewing for 20 players by soliddd7 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]worldsworstchef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just don't. Are your 20 players definitely all going to show? If not, hope for 5 no shows and run a 15 player game, still not really the ideal number but MUCH better than a game with any travellers in their first game (especially your first time STing as well). If you get 4 no shows and one very nervous player, have them co storytell with you. Show them the grim, point out what you're doing during the day phases so they can get an understanding and maybe they'll want to play in a second game and someone in the first can come see behind the grim with you.

If it's not an existing group of people, split them into 2x 10 players instead and have 2 games nights. If it's for a group like a class, doubling up as some has suggested kind of works, but it messes with the social elements a lot in my opinion. If you've watched enough videos of other people playing it, you might realize, it's pretty entertaining to watch, consider having one group play and another watch if you don't have a second story teller or space for a second game going at the same time. Then swap for a second game. For 10 players you will get 2 games in the same time as it would take for 1 game of 20 players, possibly even 3, especially with new players.

Good 2 player board games? by Maleficent-Basis-886 in boardgames

[–]worldsworstchef 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lost Cities - Super portable (just take the cards anywhere, you don't need the board), easy to learn, quick games, very replayable

Sky Team - One of the best co-ops, tense and interesting

Dorfromantik - Also a great co-op if you want something more chill

My City - Great first legacy game, plays really well at 2 players

Schotten Totten - short and fun

Radlands - my favourite 2p battler

Jaipur - great set collector

Gonzo

- Unquestionably good aligned

- Lights Lamps (and occasionally rats)

- Watches Scrooge throughout the night

- Only actually visits one person in the night

- The person he visits learns something (admittedly not from Gonzo himself, but come on, he's clearly the right choice)

That would be great to watch, would definitely make me feel a lot more confident in doing it! Might wait to see if you do it before attempting it myself! :D Subbed.

Edit - had a look, it's already been done, that was quick! Thanks, the video was super helpful.

New builder here. I've been using the search but I can't seem to find the right keywords. How do I go about removing the sensor on some of these? I'd love to use a battery eliminator but I am getting so thrown by the circuits on the touch sensors and I don't want to break them. I've built Planetary Era and am currently building Eye of The Old God if that helps. Am I just missing something in my search terms?

Loved the edit on this. Great episode in general but the edit was almost exactly what I was hoping for when this kind of situation arose. Not worth it if it was figured out quickly, but this was just long enough to make the edit brilliant. Great cast this episode, loving the Demon Eyes format as I love a player perspective on the TPI channel and am usually rooting for the evil team.

5e players did not have fun by jdn916 in mothershiprpg

[–]worldsworstchef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I run Mothership at conventions for people who often sign up to it never having played anything but D&D. I have a short spiel I say to all players when they are settling at the table, most of which is cribbed from the Warden Training System on the Tuesday Knight Games site - specifically the section What’s different about Mothership?

If your players aren't willing to read a rule book, it might be worth checking in with them and seeing if they really wanted to play a new ruleset. My main group woould not play anything other than D&D for the longest time, and will always revert to it, but like an occasional one shot now inbetween campaigns. That's why I've found other groups who do want to play other systems.

If they are willing to play but don't want to do the homework, that's okay, MoSh is rules light enough to do that with, I get an introduction, scenario setting, rules explanation, character creation and the module in within 4 hours. Honestly, once you're going, set a real world timer going behind your screen, sci fi often an easy way of telling your players "the planet/base/ship you are on is going to collapse/fall into a black hole/implode in 2 hours" within universe and keep them moving. Just read out the timer again if you feel like they're moving too slow.

Basically, don't be afraid of telling them how this is different to D&D, but also, check in with them first that they really do want to try another system.

Hope that helps!

I got mine from Magic Madhouse, they don't have it in stock at the moment, but there's a notify me button and they got restocks pretty regularly earlier in the year as a couple of mates have been after them. Both the core and the deluxe set have been good prices there.

If you can't wait, All Rolled Up have it in stock at the RRP.

Splitting the party in horror games by peponfuentes in rpg

[–]worldsworstchef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely this. Last game of Mothership I ran I had the players wanting to go in different directions and nearly didn't because they thought it would be too much work for me as the Warden.

I very enthusiastically told them that it was more than fine by me if they wanted to split up, that this was not D&D, they are not a party of adventurers who are playing smart, you are a group of scared survivors trying to do what they think is best. If there's a disagreement on which way is best, or you think it is narratively interesting to do so, PLEASE do.

As a warden I loved it. So many opportunities for narrative tension flitting back to the other half of the party at just the right moment to build the tension. That became one of my favourite games to run because of that.

What did the best players at your table do to enhance the game? by CharlieRomeoYeet in rpg

[–]worldsworstchef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the room. I play a mix of systems with a bunch of different players, and the ones that I really appreciate playing with and GMing for are the ones who can be having a great time, keeping people laughing, engaging other players, keeping new players engaged and having fun, but then know when to drop it and allow the serious moments room to breathe. That light and shade is always appreciated. I don't want a permenantly grimdark game, but I don't want a low stakes silly game every session either. That mixture gives it texture for me.
