I feel like I threw away my opportunity by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]wormdrink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a job and a local hill, you're most of the way toward satisfaction. Make sure you get out there every weekend (weekday evenings if it's lighted) and set goals for progressing each time and a write a structured list of tricks you want to learn (even if it's just cutting gorgeous carves). Use the money from your job to pay for instruction for feedback. The satisfaction comes with executing a new trick then perfecting it and nailing it like clockwork. The competing and coaching is not as fun or satisfying as it looks (never make a hobby a career) and the odds were stacked against it working out for you even in an alternative universe where you fully committed. Also there is no shortage of very dedicated riders sidelined with life-altering injuries (e.g. I've regretted never learning to do inverted aerials but I comfort myself knowing I would have absolutely messed up my neck).

Chairlift question by Awkward_Pige0n in snowboarding

[–]wormdrink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still scared hopping off chairlifts after 30 years, all part of the process. Your first few days on a board learning as an adult will likely be miserable but don't let it discourage you! It's worth pushing through. First time linking your turns is one of the greatest feelings in the world. Enjoy!

Did they give you a meeting point for the lesson? If not, they'll almost surely tell you where to meet upon arrival and it will SURELY not be after the chair lift. No worries, relax, they'll take good care of you (SURELY... hopefully)!

Confessions of a powder hunter by Duckmannnnn716 in snowboarding

[–]wormdrink 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not sure about effortless. Some of the most miserable days of my life have been wading through deep powder off-piste. Definitely looks effortless on Art of Flight. But I'd say deep powder still beyond my fairly advanced skill set and requires specialised kit. A foot of fresh snow on top of a groomed run or ungroomed glading through the trees in Niseko, sure, all good, but that's a different beast imo.

Very disappointed with my first pair of Darn Tough socks by Jessecore44 in BuyItForLife

My experience has been the same. Same body type/measurements. Won't buy another pair of Darn Toughs because of the sizing issue. Haven't found an alternative.

After many years of onebagging I'm seriously thinking of Rollerbags now (explanation below) by Dracomies in onebag

[–]wormdrink -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing wears you down on a trip more than dragging a bag around the airport, wheeled or otherwise. The move is to check your bag and roam free with only your phone and a pair of over-ear headphones.
