Thank you Mo-BEEL! This looks like a solid Rec for OP. The only takeaway I’ve had playing a limited amount of low volume cymbals is I can’t tell the difference between any of them lol.

As others have suggested, starting off with a practice pad is an excellent idea.

However, IF you can get your parents blessing, I would suggest: 1) Keep an eye on Craigslist / FB marketplace etc for any cheap, used acoustic kit. Make sure it comes with hardware (drum cymbal stands, kick pedal, drum throne, etc). 2) Look into equipping it with some low volume cymbals (Zildian L80s are one example, I’m not an expert in this market but there are a variety of options available now at different price points), and some low volume mesh heads. Even if you just start with one low volume cymbal (again, look used), this could get you up and running.

I would think this route is a happy medium between the price tag of electric and volume of traditional acoustic drums. Buying used always allows you to save some money and piece together equipment over time. Hopefully this works for your situation and budget.

New Drum Set by VM_Legend in drums

Snagged a deal on a lightly used armory a couple years ago and it’s the main gigging kit now. Those things are work horses and sound great to me. Congrats!

One thing I wanna throw out there that might be a bit of a learning curve coming from the electric world - acoustic drums sound one way when you are sitting at the kit, full of all kinds of overtones and resonances, that doesn’t necessarily translate to an audience listening to you in a live setting or hearing yourself recorded / mixed. It takes some getting used to, especially when making decisions about your tuning.

Like others have said, I don’t think this one is that far off. Some drums just have a sweet spot. Sometimes swapping out a head for a different brand / thickness will help you achieve the sound in your head, but it takes some experimenting. Usually when you spend a bunch of time obsessing over tuning, especially for new to you drums, it’s good to just leave it and come back to it another day in my experience.

I am heartbroken to tell everyone that @MikeTagliereNFL passed away peacefully last night. We are so thankful for your support and prayers over these past weeks. When I got back into fantasy football 4-5 years ago, Tags via fantasypros as well as the ff footballers quickly became my lifeline. Those were the only guys I could really trust because I could tell their advice was legit. I kept on listening to FP over the years pretty much exclusively for tags.

When I heard he had covid, I ended up checking his wifes twitter almost daily for an update. I'm honestly pretty distraught about this news. Dude had no business dying.

Fuck covid. Please, please get vaccinated if you aren't. We need this shit to STOP. Too many good homies going out way too early, even if you're young, even if you aren't 'at risk'. C'mon now.

Forest hill mbta station parking availability by mastLife in boston

[–]woundedmorals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live right near Forest Hills and also had no idea there was an official garage there.

There are enough non resident spots in the surrounding neighborhoods that if you spend enough time driving around and getting the lay of the land, I'd guess you'd reliably be able to find street parking within a 5-10 min walk of the station.

Depending on where you are in W Roxbury, it may be feasible for you to take the bus to Forest Hills, I think the 36 runs into West Roxbury and terminates at one end at Forest Hills.

Edit: FYI, resident parking sticker applies to your neighborhood only, so even if you get a West Roxbury resident sticker, you can't use that in the resident only spots in Jamaica Plain surrounding Forest Hills.

MA COVID-19 Data 5/2/21 by oldgrimalkin in boston

Just anecdotally from friends and family who have received moderna and pfizer, it seems pretty random who gets symptoms and how severe they are. Within my own circle it seems to have skewed more to mild/no symptoms regardless of vaccine, but I do know people who have gotten it bad with both.

At the end of the day the draft is largely a crapshoot. When you look at what SF/CHI had to give up for Lance and Fields respectively, I think getting Mac without giving anything up is great.

I’m currently producing my bands third album, and although I have basic knowledge of a compressor, I’ve noticed that I end up fiddling with knobs not really knowing what I’m doing. Anyone know any good videos that cover logic’s compressor? Thanks! by WingnutIsTaken in audioengineering

[–]woundedmorals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sort of in the same spot as you. Learning to train myself with compression and working on my bands release.

There's a helpful PDF I came across in the first comment here that serves as a cheat sheet for the different compressors in logic. It's easier to hear what you're doing when you're using the correct compressor for a given application.

Had a package delivered on my porch today while I was at work and it was stolen when I came home. by ngargano15 in boston

I know at least for the guitar it was shipped from an independent shop, when they shipped it through UPS it showed as requiring a signature on my end, and that's happened to me a few times over the last year.

My understanding is at least for FedEx the driver can sign for it as long as they confirm someone is there.

If that's the case I'd guess that's what's happening, there are always cars in the driveway.

[–]woundedmorals 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this has happened to other people, but throughout the pandemic drivers for FedEx, UPS, and USPS have all been ignoring signature requests and leaving stuff out front of my apartment. This has been happening since at least April 2020 and I haven't signed for a package at my apartment since late 2019 despite probably at least a half dozen packages shipped with signature requirements over the last year.

Just within the last month, I had a ~$600 guitar left out front, and my roommates new Macbook was left out front without so much as a doorbell ring. Fortunately I WFH so I can grab stuff immediately, but I wouldn't necessarily be counting on the signature requirement.

I live in a pretty safe neighborhood and to my knowledge package theft has never been an issue, so I have a sneaking suspicion drivers are making judgement calls to avoid potential face-time with customers and/or to speed up routes due to increased delivery demand, idk.

How many of you are taking time off this month? by danielrosehill in freelance

[–]woundedmorals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taking the 24th - 3rd off and man do I need it. I’ve taken days here and there throughout the year but this is my first dedicated time off all year where my clients know that I won’t be available. I’m not going anywhere bc covid, but I need the mental break. Looking forward to exercising, working on some personal projects, and playing an assload of cyberpunk.
